Mono-substituted vanadium-containing Dawson-type polyoxometalates having the general formula α1-[VIVW17X2O62]8− and α2-[VIVW17X2O62]8−, with X = As or P, were synthesised and subject to a comprehensive electrochemical study comprising the pH dependency. These POMs exhibit an electrocatalytic behaviour towards the oxidation of thiols (namely cysteine), rendering them interesting species for mimicking oxidative stress situations, at physiological pH values. The efficiency of the electro-oxidation was assessed with thiols of different nature, and the substrate that responded best was used to compare the electrocatalytic capabilities of the POM series. The magnetic behaviour of these POMs was also evaluated and compared to their analogues, α1- and α2-[VVW17X2O62]7− (X = As or P), at low temperatures and showed, as expected, a paramagnetic behaviour of VIV based compounds.

AbstractThe pedestrian-induced instability of the London Millennium Bridge is a widely used example of Kuramoto synchronisation. Yet, reviewing observational, experimental, and modelling evidence, we argue that increased coherence of pedestrians’ foot placement is a consequence of, not a cause of the instability. Instead, uncorrelated pedestrians produce positive feedback, through negative damping on average, that can initiate significant lateral bridge vibration over a wide range of natural frequencies. We present a simple general formula that quantifies this effect, and illustrate it through simulation of three mathematical models, including one with strong propensity for synchronisation. Despite subtle effects of gait strategies in determining precise instability thresholds, our results show that average negative damping is always the trigger. More broadly, we describe an alternative to Kuramoto theory for emergence of coherent oscillations in nature; collective contributions from incoherent agents need not cancel, but can provide positive feedback on average, leading to global limit-cycle motion.

Boolean nested canalizing functions (NCFs) have important applications in molecular regulatory networks, engineering and computer science. In this paper, we study their certificate complexity. For both Boolean values $b\in\{0,1\}$, we obtain a formula for $b$-certificate complexity and consequently, we develop a direct proof of the certificate complexity formula of an NCF. Symmetry is another interesting property of Boolean functions and we significantly simplify the proofs of some recent theorems about partial symmetry of NCFs. We also describe the algebraic normal form of $s$-symmetric NCFs. We obtain the general formula of the cardinality of the set of $n$-variable $s$-symmetric Boolean NCFs for $s=1,\dots,n$. In particular, we enumerate the strongly asymmetric Boolean NCFs.

In the partition theory, there is more then one form of representation of dedication, most notably the Abacus diagram, which gives an accurate and specific description. In the year 2019, Mahmood and Mahmood presented the idea of merging more than two plans, and then the following question was raised: Is the process of separating any somewhat large diagram into smaller schemes possible? The general formula to split e-abacus diagram into two or more equal or unequal parts was achieved in this study now.

The 3x+1 problem is a problem of continuous iteration for integers. According to the basic theorem of arithmetic and the way of iteration, we derive a general formula for continuous iteration for odd integers. Through this formula, we can construct a loop iteration equation and obtain the result of the equation: the equation has only one positive integer solution. In addition, this general formula can be converted into a linear indeterminate equation. The process of solving this equation shows that the relationship between the iteration result and the odd number being iterated is linear. Extending this result to all positive even numbers, we get the answer to the 3x + 1 question.

Abstract A new series of Co(II), Fe(II), Cu(II) and Ni(II) complexes of Bis–(4-benzylidenamino-phenyl)-methane (L) have been prepared and characterized. The complexes conform to general formula [CoL(H2O)3] Cl2, [FeL(H2O)5]SO4.2H2O, [CuL(H2O)5] NO3 and [NiL(H2O)3Cl2], Infra red spectra and elemental analysis reveal uni-dentate coordination of Schiff base to metal ions. Molar conductivity measurements show that complexes (I, III) behave as 2:1 electrolyte while complex (II) behave as 1:1 electrolyte. The thermal studies for complexes shows that the complexes are thermal stable.
