We formulate large [Formula: see text] duality of [Formula: see text] refined Chern–Simons theory with a torus knot/link in [Formula: see text]. By studying refined BPS states in M-theory, we provide the explicit form of low-energy effective actions of Type IIA string theory with D4-branes on the [Formula: see text]-background. This form enables us to relate refined Chern–Simons invariants of a torus knot/link in [Formula: see text] to refined BPS invariants in the resolved conifold. Assuming that the extra [Formula: see text] global symmetry acts on BPS states trivially, the duality predicts graded dimensions of cohomology groups of moduli spaces of M2–M5 bound states associated to a torus knot/link in the resolved conifold. Thus, this formulation can be also interpreted as a positivity conjecture of refined Chern–Simons invariants of torus knots/links. We also discuss about an extension to non-torus knots.

From BFSS matrix theory considerations, it is expected that a single D p+2-brane action can be obtained from N D p-brane action in large N limit. We examine and confirm this expectation by working out the details of DBI and Chern–Simons terms of D p+2-brane action from D p-brane action. We show that the same relation works for non-BPS, as well as BPS branes.

We review the recent work on the light-cone quantization of (1+1)-dimensional large N QCD coupled to adjoint matter. The spectrum of these models consists of glueball-like bound states which, in the large N limit, can be pictured as closed strings that cannot split or join. The pair creation (annihilation) inside the string is not suppressed even in the large N limit, giving rise to complex dynamics similar to that of genuine higher dimensional gauge theories. The mass spectra of such models exhibit an exponential growth of the density of states (Hagedorn behavior) and the absence of massless glueballs even in the case of massless constituents.

AbstractWe apply the methods recently developed for computation of type IIA disk instantons using mirror symmetry to a large class of D-branes wrapped over Lagrangian cycles of non-compact Calabi-Yau 3-folds. Along the way we clarify the notion of “flat coordinates” for the boundary theory. We also discover an integer IR ambiguity needed to define the quantum theory of D-branes wrapped over non-compact Lagrangian submanifolds. In the large N dual Chern-Simons theory, this ambiguity is mapped to the UV choice of the framing of the knot. In a type IIB dual description involving (p; q) 5-branes, disk instantons of type IIA get mapped to (p; q) string instantons. The M-theory lift of these results lead to computation of superpotential terms generated by M2 brane instantons wrapped over 3-cycles of certain manifolds of G2 holonomy.
