Palmaris Longus (PL) is a muscle of the forearm, i.e., not functionally necessary and does not exist in all people. It is a choice for tendon graft and investigating its prevalence is of clinical importance. During April-October 2009, 102 cadavers (78 males, 24 females) were bilaterally necropsied for PL exploration in Zanjan City, Iran. PL Absence (PLA) was observed in 37 (36.3%) cases (28 males, 9 females). PLA prevalence was similar in men (36%) and women (37.5%). Of PLA cases, 19 (51%) were unilateral (14 males, 5 females), and 18 (49%) were bilateral (14 males, 4 females). In conclusion, PLA prevalence of 36.3% in our population was similar to other studies conducted in Iran. We found no gender difference in PLA prevalence and its patterns. Due to geographical variability in PLA rate, future regional and national studies with more magnificent sample sizes are recommended to determine the prevalence and gender-specific patterns of PLA.

Abstract α-Sn is a topologically nontrivial semimetal in its natural structure. Upon compressively strained in plane, it transforms into a topological insulator. But, up to now, a clear and systematic understanding of the topological surface mode of topological insulating α-Sn is still lacking. In the present work, first-principle simulations are employed to investigate the electronic structure evolution of Ge1-xSnx alloys aiming at understanding the band reordering, topological phase transition and topological surface mode of α-Sn in detail. Progressing from Ge to Sn with increasing Sn content in Ge1-xSnx, the conduction band inverts with the first valence band and then with the second valence band sequentially, rather than inverting with the latter directly. Correspondingly, a topologically nontrivial surface mode arises in the first inverted band gap. Meanwhile, a fragile Dirac cone appears in the second inverted band gap as a result of the reorganization of the topological surface mode caused by the first valence band. The reorganization of the topological surface mode in α-Sn is very similar to the HgTe case. The findings of the present work are helpful for understanding and utilizing of the topological surface mode of α-Sn.

Abstract. In this paper we compare two independent soil moisture estimates over South Africa. The first estimate is a Soil Saturation Index (SSI) provided by automated real-time computations of the TOPKAPI hydrological model, adapted to run as a collection of independent 1 km cells with centres on a grid with a spatial resolution of 0.125°, at 3 h intervals. The second set of estimates is the remotely sensed ASCAT Surface Soil Moisture product, temporally filtered to yield a Soil Wetness Index (SWI). For the TOPKAPI cells, the rainfall forcing used is the TRMM 3B42RT product, while the evapotranspiration forcing is based on a modification of the FAO56 reference crop evapotranspiration (ET0). ET0 is computed using forecast fields of meteorological variables from the Unified Model (UM) runs done by the South African Weather Service (SAWS); the UM forecast fields were used, because reanalysis is not done by SAWS. To validate these ET0 estimates we compare them with those computed using observed meteorological data at a network of weather stations; they were found to be unbiased with acceptable scatter. Using the rainfall and evapotranspiration forcing data, the percentage saturation of the TOPKAPI soil store is computed as a Soil Saturation Index (SSI), for each of 6984 unconnected uncalibrated TOPKAPI cells at 3 h time-steps. These SSI estimates are then compared with the SWI estimates obtained from ASCAT. The comparisons indicate a good correspondence in the dynamic behaviour of SWI and SSI for a significant proportion of South Africa.
