This paper describes how a knowledge-based system for automating the process planning of progressive die design is enhanced and developed into a tutoring aid for tool and die trainees. This is achieved by incorporating an explanation engine that scans the status of the plan stored in the knowledge-base and provides reports to the user. According to the status of the plan, actions are suggested by the explanation engine to guide the user to achieve his goals. As the system is able to provide a ‘first-guess’ solution to each step of the planning process, it allows the trainee to develop the plans very quickly. It also serves as an effective tutoring aid for learning a large number of die design case studies within the time allocated for the subject.

Progressive die has been widely used in product manufacturing field. This paper proposed a NX-based computer server support design method. The equivalent stress, resilience, equivalent strain, attenuation, and forming were analyzed in detail. The key technology of confirming blank dimension and stock layout of server support were explicated clearly.

A Progressive die is used to transform flat strips of sheet metal into a formed part. This transformation is performed progressively by a series of stations that cut and bend the material into a desired shape. The progressive dies reduce the time and cost of producing complex sheet metal components. The design and manufacture of these dies are difficult. CAD/CAM systems have been proved very useful tools for this task. In this paper, a new system for design of the piercing and bending progressive die is described. In this system, piercing and bending operation are separated and the sequencing of each type is done individually. In this system first sequence of the piercing stations are determined then bending operations are sequenced based on a classification and fuzzy algorithm. Also, neural network systems are used to determine final angle of bends and die parameters. The capability of the system is shown using a sheet metal component.

This paper discusses the trends and developments in intelligent CAD of progressive die. The research efforts reviewed reveal the growing importance and relevancy of particular AI techniques for automation of progressive die design activities. Based on the knowledge base approach of AI, an intelligent CAD framework is developed and presented in this paper. The proposed intelligent CAD framework comprises different knowledge base modules for automating progressive die design process. The procedure for the development of various knowledge base modules of the proposed intelligent CAD system is described through module CCKBS which has been designed for assessing manufacturability of sheet metal parts. An illustrative example has been included for demonstrating the usefulness of the developed module CCKBS. The system framework is flexible enough to accommodate new acquired knowledge for each module. The modules of the system framework are implementable on a PC and thus can be affordable by small and medium size enterprises.
