Abstract The type species of Trophomera, T. iturupiensis, is redescribed from type material and important errors in the original description corrected. As a result of this emended description, Benthimermis is proposed as a junior synonym of Trophomera and its species transferred accordingly. The family name Benthimermithidae is retained according to articles 23.1 and 40.1 of the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature. Trophomera is diagnosed and an annotated list of nominal species presented. Trophomera litoralis sp. n., collected from the tidal zone of Ushishir Island (Kuril Archipelago), is described on the basis of four males. The males of T. litoralis sp. n. differ from those of other Trophomera species primarily by the much higher number of precloacal supplementary organs (105-108 vs 2-68). Trophomera litoralis sp. n. is most similar to T. regalis comb. n. yet differs by shorter body length (5.8-9.3 vs 14.9 mm), body proportions (a = 67-107 vs 124.4; c = 61-97 vs 135.7), greater length of the intermediate spermatoduct between the anterior and posterior testes (ca 1/7th vs ca 1/140th of body length), tail shape (rounded conoid vs pointed conoid), and number of precloacal supplementary organs (105-108 vs 49).

A novel marine bacterial strain, HY1T, was isolated from sediment of the South China Sea. The strain was aerobic and heterotrophic and formed saffron yellow-pigmented colonies on marine agar 2216. Cells were non-motile, Gram-negative rods, frequently occurring in chains. blastn searches revealed that the 16S rRNA gene sequence of strain HY1T showed high similarity with those of members of the genera Gillisia (91.7–93.8 %) and Salegentibacter (92.6–93.5 %). Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that the strain clustered with members of both Salegentibacter and Gillisia and phylogenetic trees constructed using three different methods (neighbour-joining, maximum-parsimony and minimum-evolution) indicated that strain HY1T clustered more frequently with members of the genus Salegentibacter. The DNA G+C content of strain HY1T was 44.4 mol% and its major cellular fatty acids (⩾5 % of the total fatty acids) were iso-15 : 1 (5.0 %), iso-15 : 0 (6.8 %), anteiso-15 : 0 (6.4 %), 15 : 0 (10.4 %), iso-16 : 0 (13.5 %), summed feature 3 (comprising iso-15 : 0 2-OH and/or 16 : 1ω7c; 6.3 %), iso-17 : 0 3-OH (5.2 %) and 17 : 0 2-OH (5.0 %). Cells contained menaquinone 6. Based on the phylogenetic and phenotypic analyses, strain HY1T should be classified as representing a novel species within the genus Salegentibacter, for which the name Salegentibacter catena sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is HY1T (=CGMCC 1.6101T=JCM 14015T). Based on this study and on previously described Salegentibacter species, an emended description of the genus Salegentibacter is given.

An actinomycete that developed sporangia containing four spores in a single row at the ends of short sporangiophores on branched aerial hyphae was isolated from subtropical forest soil. The isolate contained menaquinone MK-9(H4), glutamic acid, alanine and meso-diaminopimelic acid as cell-wall amino acids and madurose in the whole-cell hydrolysate. The 16S rRNA gene sequence indicated that the isolate formed a monophyletic cluster with Planotetraspora mira. On the basis of morphological and chemotaxonomic characteristics, phylogenetic analysis and DNA–DNA relatedness data, a novel species of the genus Planotetraspora is proposed, Planotetraspora silvatica sp. nov. (type strain, TT 00-51T=NBRC 100141T=DSM 44746T).

Seven strains of the genus Sphaerotilus were obtained from natural thermal sulfide (strains D-501T, D-502, D-504, D-505 and D-507) and low-temperature ferrous (strain HST) springs and from an activated sludge system (strain D-380). These Sphaerotilus isolates and strains of Sphaerotilus natans obtained from the DSMZ (S. natans DSM 6575T, DSM 565 and DSM 566) were studied using a polyphasic taxonomic approach. All strains had Q-8 as the major quinone and C16 : 1ω7, C16 : 0 and C18 : 1ω7 as the major fatty acids. The DNA–DNA hybridization results and 16S rRNA, hsp60 and gyrB gene sequencing experiments showed that isolates D-501T, D-502, D-504, D-505, D-507 and D-380 were closely related to the type strain of S. natans DSM 6575T. However, strains D-501T, D-502, D-504, D-505 and D-507 significantly differed from the heterotrophic strain S. natans DSM 6575T by their capability for lithotrophic growth with reduced sulfur compounds as an electron donor for energy conservation and some other phenotypic features. For this reason, strains D-501T, D-502, D-504, D-505 and D-507 merit a separate taxonomic classification at the subspecies level. The name Sphaerotilus natans subsp. sulfidivorans subsp. nov. (type strain D-501T = DSM 22545T = VKM B-2573T) is proposed. The subspecies Sphaerotilus natans subsp. natans subsp. nov. is automatically created as a result of this proposal. Strain D-380 was phenotypically closely related to S. natans DSM 6575T. Strains D-380 and S. natans DSM 6575T were assigned to the subspecies Sphaerotilus natans subsp. natans subsp. nov. (type strain DSM 6575T = ATCC 13338T). The 16S rRNA, hsp60 and gyrB gene sequences obtained for strains HST and DSM 565 showed very low sequence similarity values of 97.3 %, 89.7 % and 88.4 %, respectively, with S. natans DSM 6575T.
