The wetlands located at the periphery of Jimma town, southwestern Ethiopia, have critical roles in providing a range of ecological and socio-economic benefits, yet they are subject to increasing anthropogenic disturbances, notably through agriculture, settlement, intensive grazing and brick-making. This study assessed the ecological status of these wetlands, and examined the scale of the human disturbances that local communities might impose on them. Macroinvertebrate communities, water quality parameters, and human disturbance scores were assessed. Except for electrical conductivity and water temperature, no significant difference (P < 0.05) was found in physico-chemical parameters between the sampled sites. Nitrate was the only parameter that correlated with significant influence on species richness of the sampled macroinvertebrates. A total of 10 metrics were used to generate the index of biotic integrity (IBI). This IBI was then tested based on macroinvertebrate data collected. Ways of assessing and evaluating the existing ecological status of the wetlands are discussed in the context of physico-chemical parameters, IBI based on macroinvertebrates and human disturbance scales. Abstract: Aim Freshwater communities respond to abiotic and biotic changes in the environment, and are widely used as indicators of environmental integrity. Fish have been one of the most used biological groups for this purpose. The Del Azul stream located in the pampean region of Argentina has been monitored using a physicochemical approach with this monitoring being sporadic due to economic and operational constraints associated with the chemical analyses. In this paper we developed an Index of Biotic Integrity for the Del Azul stream (IBIA) based on Karr´s Index of Biotic Integrity as an alternative. Methods We computed two existent physicochemical indexes for comparison, one of them is the NSF-WQI and the other one is a local index referred to as Water Quality Index for Del Azul Stream and based on the former. Results The three indexes followed similar trends along the examined reaches, showing good conditions in the upper basin, poor conditions just downstream of the urban area and a recovery state further downstream in the basin. Conclusions Since the IBIA followed the same patterns as the physicochemical indexes, has a lower implementation cost and it is simpler to apply, we promote it as an alternative to the traditional physicochemical water quality monitoring for pampean streams.

Cihampelas Stream is a tributary of the Citarum that flows across the Regency and Bandung area along 8,5 km. Cihampelas Stream are utilized by the community for domestic activities, tourism, agriculture, and fisheries. This study aims to determine the water quality based on Macrozoobenthos Index of Biotic Integrity and Periphytic Diatom Index of Biotic Integrity and its correlation with the Pollution Index (water classes). This research was conducted at four Cihampelas Stream stations representing the minimal areas of disturbance to the predicted areas of disturbance such as Cilengkrang, Cisurupan, Pasanggrahan, and Mekarmulya. Water sampling, macrozoobenthos, and periphytic diatom was conducted from July to September 2016 four times at two-week intervals. Assessment of water quality using Macrozoobenthos Index of Biotic Integrity shows that Cihampelas Stream is categorized from very good to bad category with index value ranging from 4?18. The water quality of the Cihampelas Stream shows very good to bad category based on the value of the Periphytic Diatom Index of Biotic Integrity which ranges from 3?15. Based on Pollution Index, along Cihampelas Stream is fulfilled class I to exceed class IV of water quality standard. Spearman correlation analysis results shows that Pollution Index (water classes) has negative correlation and stronger to Macrozoobenthos Index of Biotic Integrity compared to Periphytic Diatom Index of Biotic Integrity.Development of bioassessment methode for water quality assessment of Cihampelas Stream in the Citarum River Basin
