Water Quality Parameters and Macroinvertebrates Index of Biotic Integrity of the Jimma Wetlands, Southwestern Ethiopia

The wetlands located at the periphery of Jimma town, southwestern Ethiopia, have critical roles in providing a range of ecological and socio-economic benefits, yet they are subject to increasing anthropogenic disturbances, notably through agriculture, settlement, intensive grazing and brick-making. This study assessed the ecological status of these wetlands, and examined the scale of the human disturbances that local communities might impose on them. Macroinvertebrate communities, water quality parameters, and human disturbance scores were assessed. Except for electrical conductivity and water temperature, no significant difference (P < 0.05) was found in physico-chemical parameters between the sampled sites. Nitrate was the only parameter that correlated with significant influence on species richness of the sampled macroinvertebrates. A total of 10 metrics were used to generate the index of biotic integrity (IBI). This IBI was then tested based on macroinvertebrate data collected. Ways of assessing and evaluating the existing ecological status of the wetlands are discussed in the context of physico-chemical parameters, IBI based on macroinvertebrates and human disturbance scales. Monitoring of environmental factors allows the achievement of some important objectives regarding water quality, forecasting, warning and intervention. The aim of this paper is to investigate water quality parameters in some potential pollutant sources from northern, southern and east-southern areas of Romania. Surface water quality data for some selected chemical parameters were collected and analyzed at different points from March to May 2017.

Physico-chemistry and biological data were investigated  from  October 2010 until April 2011 of Jatiluhur reservoir. A total of six sampling stations were selected for this study. The discharge and hidrological data were obtained from Perum Jasa Tirta II Jatiluhur. The results showed that the hydrological regime in the reservoir Jatiluhur was affected by global phenomenon La Nina events in 2010 and early in 2011. Stream flows were determined during sampling to range from 78  to 482.5 m3/s. The water quality findings were as follows: pH (6.93-8.81), temperature (26.37-30.6°C), dissolved oxygen (0.733-5.2 mg/l), conductivity (2.45-233µmhos/cm), COD (7.36-96.9 mg/l), turbidity (4.063-65.6 NTU), total phosphate (0.002-0.324 mg/l), total nitrogen (0.99-5.96 mg/l), chlorophyl (2.237-43.37 mg/m3), visibility (30-160 cm). The eutrophication was pronounced at Jatiluhur reservoir. Canonical Correspendence Analysis found that some water quality parameters correlated positively with the discharge and the water level.

Tarahara Fish Farm includes 37 large ponds as a fish super zone. Physicochemical parameters viz., air and water temperature, pH, DO, BOD, CO2, Cl-, TA and TH of these ponds were studied for two years (Nov. 2008 to Oct. 2010). The air temperature had positive and significant correlation with water temperature (r=0.893, P<0.01) but inverse and significant correlation with DO (r = - 0.669 P<0.05) and TH (r = - 0.673, P<0.05). Both air and water temperature showed a decreasing trend during the winter months of November to January and again September to October in both years. Similarly, positive and significant correlation showed by pH with DO (r =0.660, P<0.05) and BOD (r =0.846, P<0.05); by free CO2 with DO (r=0.854, P<0.01), chloride (r=0.648, P<0.05) and TA (r=0.616, P<0.05); by DO with TA (r =0.715, P<0.01) and chloride (r =0.625, P<0.05) and by TH with TA (r= 0.592, P<0.05) but inverse and significant correlation showed by pH with water temperature (r =-0.671, P<0.05); by free CO2 with BOD (r=-0.627, P<0.05) and by DO with BOD (r = -0.810, P <0.01). The water quality parameters were within suitable range for the fish growth and breeding with small fluctuations in different months during the first and second years. Physico-chemical parameters significantly (P<0.01; 0.05) differed between different months. However, no mass mortality of fish was recorded from this site. So, the area selected as fish super zone is fruitful to meet the expected production level of fishes and fish seeds in peripheral areas.

&lt;p&gt;Lakes and water reservoirs are important ecosystems providing such services as drinking water, recreation, support for biodiversity as well as regulation of carbon cycling and climate. There are about 117 million lakes worldwide and a high need for regular monitoring of their water quality. European Union Water Framework Directive (WFD) stipulates that member states shall establish a programme for monitoring the ecological status of all water bodies larger than 50 ha, in order to ensure future quality and quantity of inland waters. But only a fraction of lakes is included in in-situ monitoring networks due to limited resources. In Latvia, there are 2256 lakes larger than 1 ha covering 1.5% of Latvian territory, and approximately 300 lakes are larger than 50 ha, but only 180 are included in Inland water monitoring program, in addition, most of them are monitored once in three to six years. Besides, local municipalities are responsible for the management of lakes, and they are also interested in the assessment of ecological status and regular monitoring of these valuable assets.&amp;#160;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Satellite data is a feasible way to monitor lakes over a large region with reasonable frequency and support the WFD status assessment process. There are several satellite-based sensors (eg. MERIS, MODIS, OLCI) available specially designed for monitoring of water quality parameters, however, they are limited only to use for large water bodies due to a coarse spatial resolution (250...1000 m/pix). Sentinel-2 MSI is a space-borne instrument providing 10...20 m/pix multispectral data on a regular basis (every 5 days at the equator and 2..3 days in Latvia), thus making it attractive for monitoring of inland water bodies, especially the small ones (&lt;1 km&lt;sup&gt;2&lt;/sup&gt;).&amp;#160;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Development of Sentinel-2 satellite data-based service (SentiLake) for monitoring of Latvian lakes is being implemented within the ESA PECS for Latvia program. The pilot territory covers two regions in Latvia and includes more than 100 lakes larger than 50 ha. Automated workflow for selecting and processing of available Sentinel-2 data scenes for extracting of water quality parameters (chlorophyll-a and TSM concentrations) for each target water body has been developed. Latvia is a northern country with a frequently cloudy sky, therefore, optical remote sensing is challenging in or region. However, our results show that 1...4 low cloud cover Sentinel-2 data acquisitions per month could be expected due to high revisit frequency of Sentinel-2 satellites. Combination of C2X and C2RCC processors was chosen for the assessment of chl-a concentration showing the satisfactory performance - R&lt;sup&gt;2&lt;/sup&gt; = 0,82 and RMSE = 21,2 &amp;#181;g/l. Chl-a assessment result is further converted and presented as a lake quality class. It is expected that SentiLake will provide supplementary data to limited in situ data for filling gaps and retrospective studies, as well as a visual tool for communication with the target audience.&lt;/p&gt;

The Meghna River is one of the most important rivers in Bangladesh, one of the three rivers, the Ganges delta, and the largest delta in the world in the Bay of Bengal. The water quality of Meghna has become a matter of concern due to serious levels of pollution. The present study was conducted to assess the surface water quality of upstream of the Meghna River using physic-chemical parameters in summer and winter season at five different points. Water quality was evaluated by laboratory analysis considering a total of six water quality parameters, pH, DO, BOD, COD, salinity and TDS and water samples were collected from five stations. The study indicates that some parameters exceed the permissible limit for drinking purpose, it may cause potential threat to the human, but the water of this river is not immediate threat to human or ecosystem.

Physical, chemical, and biological parameters of the Kole (Open type) and Suguna (Closed type) wetlands have been investigated from January 2011 to December 2013. These lakes are locally called as Baur.The work has been carried out for one and half year period from nov 2011- May2013 in different seasons viz. monsoon, post monsoon and premonsoon respectively in order to assess water quality parameters and diversity of biotic communities. The present article attempts to investigate the possible interrelationship among the physicochemical parameters and biotic communities of both the beels. During the investigation, zooplankton diversity was observed high in the wetland. Rotifers were the most dominant group followed by Cladocera, Copepoda, Protozoa and Ostracoda during the investigation. There is a high density of zooplankton in monsoon than compare to other seasons indicate good water quality and less pollution load in both beels. These investigations will be the basic guidelines for the researcher in the field of ecology of beels. The comparison of the ecological parameters of these two lakes is attempted in the present investigation. The study aim to investigate the diversity of biotic communities in relation to physico-chemical parameters of surface water in gangetic plain. Physico-chemical parameters of both the beels revealed well marked fluctuations with maxima and minima values of each parameter during specific months and analysis of biotic communities revealed seasonal variations with an increase during summer and a fall during winter and monsoon seasons.

High-frequency sensors can monitor water quality with high temporal resolution and without environmental influence. However, sensors for detecting key water quality parameters, such as total nitrogen(TN), total phosphorus(TP), and other water environmental parameters, are either not yet available or have attracted limited usage. By using a large number of high-frequency sensor and manual monitoring data, this study establishes regression equations that measure high-frequency sensor and key water quality parameters through multiple regression analysis. Results show that a high-frequency sensor can quickly and accurately estimate dynamic key water quality parameters by evaluating seven water quality parameters. An evaluation of the flux of four chemical parameters further proves that the multi-parameter sensor can efficiently estimate the key water quality parameters. However, due to the different optical properties and ecological bases of these parameters, the high-frequency sensor shows a better prediction performance for chemical parameters than for physical and biological parameters. Nevertheless, these results indicate that combining high-frequency sensor monitoring with regression equations can provide real-time and accurate water quality information that can meet the needs in water environment management and realize early warning functions.
