The surface of neutron-rich heavy nuclei, with a neutron skin created by excess neutrons, provides an important terrestrial model system to study dilute neutron-rich matter. By using quasi-free α cluster–knockout reactions, we obtained direct experimental evidence for the formation of α clusters at the surface of neutron-rich tin isotopes. The observed monotonous decrease of the reaction cross sections with increasing mass number, in excellent agreement with the theoretical prediction, implies a tight interplay between α-cluster formation and the neutron skin. This result, in turn, calls for a revision of the correlation between the neutron-skin thickness and the density dependence of the symmetry energy, which is essential for understanding neutron stars. Our result also provides a natural explanation for the origin of α particles in α decay.

AbstractAllanite is a common accessory mineral in igneous rocks. Allanite becomes metamict over geological time-scales as a result of the α-decay of radioactive elements in the crystal structure. This study focuses on the recrystallization of metamict allanite from Savvushka, Russia. The structural recovery produced by annealing was investigated by X-ray powder diffraction, single-crystal synchrotron X-ray diffraction and infrared spectroscopy. A kinetic analysis is presented that shows that the recrystallization process proceeds by at least two different mechanisms.

AbstractThe plutonium α decay leads to the formation of numerous point defects in the metal structure. The multi-scale modeling of self-irradiation effects in plutonium alloys needs a quantitative knowledge of defects population properties. In this work, we initiated a parametric study of molecular dynamics displacement cascade simulations to get properties of defects microstructure such as number of point defects, number and size of clusters, spatial repartition and spatial expansion of the cascade. These data constitute some of the input parameters for the mesoscopic scale simulations. First results obtained for two 2 keV energy cascades simulations are presented and discussed.
