In 1951, an argument that schools should be charitable only if they offer free or reduced tuition was dismissed by the court as a “startling proposition”.1 Yet, in 2010, an independent school was assured of its charitable status only when it agreed to offer means-tested bursaries.2 So did the law change with the Charities Act 2006 (‘the Act’)?

This article reports on ways in which one Australian independent school seeks to develop and sustain best practice and academic integrity in its programs through a system of ongoing program evaluation, involving a systematic, cyclical appraisal of the school’s suite of six faculties. A number of different evaluation methods have been and continue to be used, each developed to best suit the particular program under evaluation. In order to gain an understanding of the effectiveness of this process, we conducted a study into participants’ perceptions of the strengths and weaknesses of the four program evaluations undertaken between 2009 and 2011. Drawing on documentary analysis of the evaluation reports and analysis of questionnaire data from the study participants, a number of findings were generated. These findings are provided and discussed, together with suggestions about ways in which the conceptualisation and conduct of school program evaluations might be enhanced.

As a district, Mansfield Independent School District wanted to validate that Health Services was performing at the highest level possible, implementing evidence-based practices, and achieving the highest outcomes with our students and staff. NASN (2016) had developed the Framework for 21st Century School Nursing Practice to illustrate the practice of school nurses; and sought ways to operationalize the Framework for local school nurses and district level use. This article will explain how the two groups partnered together to develop a tool and assessment program. The article will discuss the approach, challenges, and perspectives of both Mansfield Independent School District and NASN, lessons learned, outcome, and future/potential changes within health services.

In the years before the Missouri Compromise, petitioners who won their freedom suits based upon their ancestral links to white women, with land, could participate in the body politic. However, as Maryland legislators began to identify with the plantation south, they invented a legal understanding that would deny ambiguously freed blacks freedom, and justices would re-invent proslavery jurispudence, using the attachment clause, which would remand the previously freed into a status worse than before they had petitioned the court. Those who were freed and could claim citizenship in the years immediately after the American Revolution, by 1810, case law had changed and they lost many of their rights they once held. By using a slave state like Maryland as a microcosm, this research hopes to show the gradual way African Americans were not only denied claims to legal protections but, were deprived of their rightful place as agents in this new democratic experiment.
