The nonlinear viscoelastic response of a PVC-Coated Fabric has been studied. For the needs of the present study, creep and recovery tests in tension of both the warp and the weft directions at the different stress levels were executed while measurements were made of the creep and recovery strain response of the system. For the description of the viscoelastic behaviour of the material, Schapery’s nonlinear viscoelastic model was used. For the description of the nonlinear viscoelastic response and the determination of the nonlinear parameters, a method by using a combination of analytical formulations and numerical procedures based on a modified version of Schapery’s constitutive relationship where an instantaneous plastic and a transient plastic terms were added, has been developed. The method has been successfully applied to the current tests.

Previous empirical studies have shown that vocal fold tissues exhibit nonlinear viscoelastic behaviors under different loading conditions. Hysteresis and strain rate-dependence of stress-strain curves have been observed for different layers of vocal fold tissues when subjected to cyclic tensile loading [1,2]. Nonlinear viscoelastic response has also been described for vocal fold tissues subjected to constant strain and constant stress tests under both tensile loading and large-strain shear deformation conditions [3,4]. These findings cannot be adequately described by many of the traditional constitutive formulations of linear and quasilinear viscoelasticity. For instance, models based on Y. C. Fung’s quasilinear viscoelastic theory typically apply two separate functions to describe the time dependence and the strain dependence of stress (e.g., the reduced relaxation function G(t) and the elastic response σe(ε), respectively), and combine the two functions by the Boltzmann superposition principle [5]. Such formulations assume that time dependence and strain dependence can be separated. However, recently obtained stress relaxation data of vocal fold tissues under various magnitudes of applied shear strain indicated that they are not separable, as relaxation became slower with increasing strain [4]. This paper attempts to characterize some nonlinear viscoelastic behaviors of vocal fold tissues under tensile and shear deformation conditions based on an implementation of the Bergstrom-Boyce model [6,7].

Agencies have been increasing their use of polymer modified asphalt binders in recent years to address performance issues and lengthen the useful life of their pavements. When deployed these materials likely experience strain levels exceeding their linear viscoelastic (LVE) limits. The same situation exists in non-polymer modified asphalt binders as well, but the effect may be more pronounced in polymer modified systems because of their bi-phasic nature. In this study, terminally blended crumb rubber (CR-TB) modified asphalt is studied to understand and quantify the nonlinear viscoelastic response under large strains. The CR-TB binders are extensively used in pavements subjected to high vehicular loads and extreme climatic conditions; thereby, their response under large strains becomes more critical. The current standard characterization techniques are based on LVE response using small amplitude oscillatory shear rheology only and do not consider the behavior of binders under large strains. In this study, large amplitude oscillatory shear (LAOS) rheology is used as a framework to more thoroughly investigate the complete response of the CR-TB modified asphalt binder under large strains at 30°C, 40°C, 50°C, and 60°C and at the frequencies of 0.5, 1, and 5 Hz. The LAOS response is analyzed using Fourier-transform rheology and the orthogonal stress decomposition method involving Chebyshev polynomial representation. It is found that nonlinearity manifests greatly in this study material as strain levels increase and frequencies decrease. The relative nonlinearity increases with increasing strain amplitude and is more significant towards lower end of the tested temperature range. The CR-TB binder shows strain-stiffening/softening and shear-thinning/thickening behavior depending upon a specific temperature, strain level, and frequency.

Analytical Approaches

In the present study, viscoelastic response of an active fiber composite (AFC) is investigated by conducting stress relaxation and creep deformation tests, and the quasi-linear viscoelastic (QLV) constitutive model is used to describe the viscoelastic response of the AFC. The AFC under study consists of unidirectional long piezoelectric ceramic fibers embedded in an epoxy polymer, encapsulated between two Kapton layers with interdigitated surface electrodes. The relaxation and creep experiments are performed by loading the AFC samples along the longitudinal axis of the fibers, under several strain and stress levels at three temperatures, namely 25 °C, 50 °C, and 75 °C. The experimental results reveal the nonlinear viscoelastic behavior of the composite. Next, simulation and prediction of the viscoelastic response, including stress relaxation and creep deformation of the material, are done by using semi-analytical QLV model in which a relaxation time-dependent function is used, which also depends on strain and temperature. The results from the model are compared with those from the experiments. In general, the experimental and simulation results are in good agreement, except in the case of some of the creep responses, where considerable discrepancies are seen between the experimental and analytical approaches. Possible reasons for these differences are discussed in details.
