Abstract. Geological carbon sequestration provides permanent CO2 storage to mitigate the current high concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere. CO2 mineralization in basalts has been proven to be one of the most secure storage options. For successful implementation and future improvements of this technology, the time-dependent deformation behavior of reservoir rocks in the presence of reactive fluids needs to be studied in detail. We conducted load-stepping creep experiments on basalts from the CarbFix site (Iceland) under several pore fluid conditions (dry, H2O saturated and H2O + CO2 saturated) at temperature, T≈80 ∘C and effective pressure, Peff=50 MPa, during which we collected mechanical, acoustic and pore fluid chemistry data. We observed transient creep at stresses as low as 11 % of the failure strength. Acoustic emissions (AEs) correlated strongly with strain accumulation, indicating that the creep deformation was a brittle process in agreement with microstructural observations. The rate and magnitude of AEs were higher in fluid-saturated experiments than in dry conditions. We infer that the predominant mechanism governing creep deformation is time- and stress-dependent subcritical dilatant cracking. Our results suggest that the presence of aqueous fluids exerts first-order control on creep deformation of basaltic rocks, while the composition of the fluids plays only a secondary role under the studied conditions.

Computer models used in the design calculation of masonry buildings sometimes fail to correctly take into account the stress-strain state of walls and assess the likelihood of cracks caused by the deformation differences of interacting walls.Following the construction of a building, cracks can develop at wall intersections for several years. However, their repair is mostly ineffective until the total damping of masonry creep deformation.Drawing on the analysis of conducted research and field data, the authors give recommendations on ensuring the crack resistance of internal masonry walls.

The fragile structure of a rootstock predisposes the stem to mechanical damage during grafting. Thus, it is necessary to take into account the rootstock’s rheological properties under mechanical compression when designing a clamping mechanism. This study focused on cucurbit, a typical rootstock for watermelon grafting. Firstly, we adopted a four-element Burgers model to analyze viscoelastic behavior and deformation characteristics of the rootstock, then conducted creep tests to obtain the parameters of the viscoelastic model. Next, we developed a model for the rootstock during holding based on viscoelastic parameters, loading force and contact time. Moreover, we evaluated the effect of various loading forces and test velocities on creep deformation to reveal the least damage on the rootstock. Results showed that the influence of loading force on the creep deformation was greater than test velocity. Finally, the holding test indicated that the clamping mechanism with silicone rubber can effectively prevent the damage to the stem. Specifically, the loading force should be controlled below 4 N to reduce the associated damage. Taken together, our findings provide a theoretical basis for analyzing the holding damage mechanism during watermelon grafting.

In this investigation, the uniaxial short-term creep tests with multi-step loading were conducted on the sandstone-coal composite samples, and the characteristics of creep strength, creep deformation, acoustic emission (AE), and creep failure of composite samples were studied, respectively. The creep strength of the composite sample decreased with the stress-level duration, which was mainly determined by the coal and influenced by the interactions with the sandstone. The creep deformation and damage of sandstone weakened the deformation and damage accumulation within the coal, resulting in the larger strength for the composite sample compared with the pure coal sample. The axial creep strain of composite sample generally increased with the stress-level or the stress-level duration under same conditions. The AE characteristics of composite sample were related to the creep strain rate, the stress level, the stress level duration, and the local failure or fracture during creep loading. The micro or macro failure and fracture within the composite sample caused the rise in the axial creep strains and the frequency and intensity of AE signals, especially the macro failure and fracture. The creep failures of composite samples mainly occurred within the coal with the splitting ejection failure accompanied by the local shear failure, and no obvious failures were found within the sandstone. The coal in the composite sample became more broken with the stress-level duration.
