Representatives of phycobiliprotein-containing algae such as Anabaena cylindrica, Anacystis ni- dulans, Gloeotrichia echinulata (Cyanophyceae), Chroomonas spec., Hemiselmis rufescens, Rhodomonas spec. (Cryptophyceae), Porphyridium cruentum, Rhodella violacea (Rhodophyceae) along with the unicellular Cyanidium caldarium (unspecified systematic status) have been investigated for their typical photoassimilatory accumulation products. While the red algal species synthesize a rather specific heteroside, 2-O-ᴅ-glycerol-α-ᴅ-galactopyranoside (= floridoside), not encountered in the other species analyzed, blue-green algae accumulate fructose, glucose, and sucrose, while the cryptomonads accumulate only glucose and. to a lesser extent, fructose. Cyanidium synthesizes neither disaccharides, nor a heteroside, but shows rapid 14C-labelling of fructose and glucose. These results are compared with further biochemical and structural findings and are discussed with emphasis on chemotaxonomic implications. Cyanidium caldarium is proposed as an endocyanome consisting of a single endocyanella providing the functions of a chromatophore in a colourless (apoplastidal algal?) host cell.

Tropical cyclones are regarded as the most deadly among all natural disasters. They bring catastrophic ravages to life and property as well as to environment. Among all the areas in the world affected by tropical cyclones, the countries along the rim of the Bay of Bengal suffer most and Bangladesh is the worst sufferer. In order to minimise the future loss of life and property, proper cyclone disaster management action is an absolute necessity. This, in turn, requires a better assessment of risks associated with a cyclone. The present paper discusses the major components of risk assessment, viz., (i) inventory of cyclones with associated causes of hazards, (ii) analysis of damages and inventory of elements at risk and (iii) vulnerability analysis with special reference to Bangladesh. Inventory of cyclones deals with the cyclone climatology in the Bay of Bengal region over the period 1881-1990. Discussions on causes of hazards cover strong winds. storm surges, rainfall. socio-economic factors, greenhouse effects, etc. An idea about the degree of cyclone damages and the elements at risks in Bangladesh is given. Some discussions on vulnerability analysis and risk reduction/mitigation with a few case studies in Bangladesh are made. Finally few recommendations are put forward.

The ongoing pandemic has drastically affected the Bay of Bengal countries. Greater cooperation is suggested as these countries are fighting against the common problem and challenge of the coronavirus pandemic. Regional cooperation has become important to overcome the barriers that are mainly pandemic driven which has resulted in an increase in the cost of production and trade in the region. The chapter discusses the benefits that India is likely to get with higher integration with the immediate neighbouring countries with special reference to BIMSTEC region. The Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) region is a dynamic region with trade as the driver of growth. The region is often overlapped with SAARC regional grouping with almost similar members. BIMSTEC gained its lost recognition in the year 2016, due to its high growth potential to develop sustainably.
