Abstract Rapeseed breeding programs are focused mainly on improving plant potential and seed yield. One of the ways to improve seed yield in oilseed rape is heterosis, which is hybrid vigor that results in a greater biomass, increased seed yield, and faster development. The purpose of this study was to estimate yield-related trait heterosis for single cross and three-way cross hybrids of winter oilseed rape (Brassica napus L.). A population of 60 doubled-haploid (DH) lines and two generations of hybrids were evaluated in field trials to assess six yield-related traits: plant height, number of branches per plant, number of siliques per plant, silique length, number of seeds per silique, and thousand seed weight. Heterosis effects for each trait were estimated by a comparison of the particular hybrid with: (1) the trait mean over both parents—mid-parent heterosis and (2) to the value of better parent—best-parent heterosis. Traits with clear positive heterosis and traits with varied heterosis were observed in this study. For the first group, we include plant height, silique length, and the number of seeds per silique—a large number of hybrids expressed significant positive heterosis for these traits, independent from the year of observations and the type of hybrid. For the second group, with varied heterosis, we can include the number of branches and siliques per plant and thousand seed weight. For these traits, hybrids exhibited both positive and negative significant heterosis, without a clear pattern for the years and types of hybrids.

The study was conducted between 2015-2017 at Tekirdağ Namık Kemal University, Agriculture Faculty, Field Crops Department, Research and Experimental Area and Atatürk Soil, Water and Agricultural Meteorology Research Institute Research and Experimental Area (Kırklareli) in randomized block design with three replications. Five Hungarian vetch genotypes (cv. Egebeyazı and cv. Sarıefe, 47.1, 47.2, 56.3 lines) were used as material. Plant height (cm), number of branches per plant (pcs), number of pods per plant (pcs), number of seeds per pod (pcs), thousand seed weight (g), seed yield (t ha-1) were determined. The characters which were determined in the study varied between; plant height 76.50-97.97 cm, number of branches per plant 3.87-5.08 pcs, number of pods per plant 17.20-24.35 pcs, number of seeds per pod 3.77-5.47 pcs, thousand seed weight 32.08-39.15 g, seed yield 0.70-1.08 t ha-1. According to seed yield results 56.3 and 47.2 genotypes can be grown for seed in Tekirdağ, Kırklareli and similar ecological conditions.

AbstractThe aims of this study were to estimate the diversity of doubled haploid population of winter oilseed rape (Brassica napus L.) in terms of yield, yield structure and seed colour, to determine the correlation between the studied traits and their heritability, and to select the best yellow-seeded genotypes. We studied 44 doubled haploids, obtained from F1 hybrids of a cross between a black-seeded DH H2-26 line and a yellow-seeded DH Z-114 line, as well as the parental forms. The greatest variation in DH line populations was observed for seed colour, seed yield and the number of pods per plant, while the smallest variability was obtained for thousand seed weight. Seed yield was positively correlated with the number of pods per plant and the number of seeds per pod, but negatively correlated with yellow seed colour. The broad-sense heritability coefficient was highest for seed colour and number of seeds per pod, and lowest for the number of pods per plant. When divided into 4 homogeneous groups according to seed colour, the genotypes differed significantly with respect to all the studied traits. A group of DH lines with black seed colour was characterized by the highest seed yield as well as highest thousand seed weight. The lowest yielding DH line group, that with yellow–brown seeds, had on average the highest number of seeds per pod and the lowest thousand seed weight. The best yellow-seeded genotypes were selected. Four yellow-seeded lines gave significantly higher yields than the yellow-seeded parental line.

Forty four testcross progenies obtained from crossing between five CMS and forty one candidate lines were evaluated both in field and laboratory condition to identify candidate restorer line(s). Nineteen testcross progenies were recorded as fully fertile with 100% plant fertility by counting the number of fertile plants from the total number of plants per lines. On the other hand from pollen fertility test, 11 testcross progenies [206A × 001(6), 9905A × 030(2), 9905A × 027(6) (0.57), 206A × 37(1) (0.68), 9904A × 027(4) (0.83), 248A × 020(6) (1.08), 248A × 018 (1.12), 248A × 022 (1.13), 248A × 017 (1.58), 248A × 038(2) (1.96) and 248A × 001(6) (2.02)] were found with 0-2.02% pollen sterility that could be mentioned as fertile or restorer lines for making hybrids. Agronomic performances were also satisfactory for these selected test cross progenies. The genotype 248A × 017 took the shortest time (30.00) for first flowering as well as ripening followed by 248A × 007(1). The highest number of pods per plant was observed in the testcross progeny 248A × 022 (649.59) and the highest number of seeds per pod (30.33) in 248A × 020(6). For seed weight per plant, 206A × 001(6) was recorded with maximum value (0.08g) while the lowest (23.33) number of seeds per plant was found in this progeny. In case of seed yield per plant, 248A × 022 gave the highest yield (30.30). The seed yield of the progenies 248A × 017 (23.49), 9905A × 027(6) (20.39), 248A × 001(6) (17.26), 9904A × 027(4) (17.02) and 248A × 038(2) (16.53) were also in the highest level.

AbstractSulphur (S) is considered to improve the nutrient uptake of plants due to its synergistic relationship with other nutrients. This could ultimately enhance the seed yield of oilseed crops. However, there is limited quantitative information on nutrient uptake, distribution, and its associated impacts on seed yield of sesame under the S application. Thus, a two-year field study (2018 and 2019) was conducted to assess the impacts of different S treatments (S0 = Control, S20 = 20, S40 = 40, and S60 = 60 kg ha−1) on total dry matter production, nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, S uptake and distribution at the mid-bloom stage and physiological maturity. Furthermore, treatment impacts were studied on the number of capsules per plant, number of seeds per capsule, thousand seed weight, and seed yield at physiological maturity in sesame. Compared to S0, over the years, treatment S40 significantly increased the total uptake of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, and S (by 13, 22, 11% and 16%, respectively) at physiological maturity, while their distribution by 13, 36, 14, and 24% (in leaves), 12, 15, 11, and 15% (in stems), 15, 42, 18, and 10% (in capsules), and 14, 22, 9, and 15% (in seeds), respectively. Enhanced nutrient uptake and distribution in treatment S40 improved the total biomass accumulation (by 28%) and distribution in leaves (by 34%), stems (by 27%), capsules (by 26%), and seeds (by 28%), at physiological maturity, as compared to S0. Treatment S40 increased the number of capsules per plant (by 13%), number of seeds per capsule (by 11%), and thousand seed weight (by 6%), compared to S0. Furthermore, over the years, relative to control, sesame under S40 had a higher seed yield by 28% and enhanced the net economic returns by 44%. Thus, our results suggest that optimum S level at the time of sowing improves the nutrient uptake and distribution during the plant lifecycle, which ultimately enhances total dry matter accumulation, seed yield, and net productivity of sesame.

This research was carried out in the Experimental Field of Tekirda đ Agricultural Faculty. Two common vetch varieties and 5 lines were sown with 150 seeds/m 2 plant density according to a randomised block design. Some important yield related characters such as plant height, number of branches, number of pods per plant, number of seeds per pod, pod width, pod length, 1000 seed weight, fodder and seed yield were examined. The results of variance analysis showed that the effects of genotype, year and their interaction on number of branches and number of pods per plant were all significant. In addition, the effect of year and variety on plant height and seed yield were found to be significant. Moreover, the number of seeds per pod, pod width and pod length were found to be significant in variety and year × variety interaction. There was only a difference between years for 1000 seed weight and fodder yield. According to the results, genotype 283 and Tokat had similar performance to that of commercial cultivars (Ürem, Kubilay). Especially the fodder and seed yield of genotype 283 were found to be higher than those of the cultivars (Ürem, Kubilay).

The experimental material comprised of forty eight genotypes consisting of five Mori based CMS lines and seven Mori based fertile lines crossed in line x tester mating design. The resultant thirty five hybrids along with their twelve parents and standard check (GDM 4) were evaluated in randomized block design at Castor-Mustard Research Station, Sardarkrushinagar Dantiwada Agricultural University, Sardarkrushinagar during, rabi 2018-2019. The analysis of variance for combining ability revealed that variance due to gca was significant for all the characters except number of seeds per siliqua, seed yield per plant and 1000 seed weight. Whereas, variance due to sca was significant for all the traits. This indicates significant contribution of hybrids for specific combining ability variance component. The ratio of σ2gca/σ2sca below than unity for days to maturity, siliqua length, number of seeds per siliqua, seed yield per plant, 1000 seed weight and oil content which suggested greater role of non-additive gene action in the inheritance of these traits. Among the parents, female SKM 9928 and Kranti were good general combiner for seed yield per plant, total number of branches per plant and total number of siliquae per plant. Whereas, male parent Mori 'R' 1-18 was good general combiner for seed yield per plant, total number of branches per plant and total number of siliquae per plant. Best three hybrids which possessed significant positive SCA effects for seed yield per plant were SKM 301 x SKM 303, SKM 9928 x Pusa Agrani and Kranti x Mori ‘R’ 1-18.

Sesame (Sesamum indicum L.) is one of the major oil yielding plant in India, but the production of sesame seed is very low. Now it is necessary to establish the selection criteria that directly or indirectly increase the seed yield per sesame plant. In this study, freshly harvested seeds of 21 stable advance lines of sesame and their 8 parents such as R-9, B-14, B-9, B-67, T-12, IDP-51, IET-2, HT-1 were taken to evaluate the selection criteria for higher seed yield. The results indicated that number of branches/plant, number of capsule/plant, number of seeds/capsule and 100 seed weight were strongly related with sesame yield. Thus, selection of advance lines of sesame, that have higher seed yield, can be done on the basis of number of branches/plant, number of seeds/capsule, 100 seed weight and harvest index. Moreover, these traits may be employed as the selection criteria for the betterment of sesame seed yield in future agricultural system.

Background. An insufficient amount of nutrients in plants results in the disturbance of basic physiological processes, weakens the growth and development of plants, and consequently contributes to a reduction in yield. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of foliar fertilizers containing sulphur, boron and amino acids on the seed yield of three winter oilseed rape morphotypes (Monolit, PX115, PT248).Material and methods. The study was carried out in 2016-2019 at the Zawady Agricultural Experimental Station (52o03' N; 22o33' E) belonging to the University of Natural Sciences and Humanities in Siedlce, in Poland. The field experiment was established in a split-plot design with three replicates. The studied factors were: I – three winter oilseed rape morphotypes: population (cv. Monolit), restored with the traditional growth type (cv. PT248), and restored with the semi-dwarf growth type (cv. PX115); II – types of foliar feeding: 1. The control variant – without foliar feeding and amino acids applied, 2. biostimulant Aminoplant, 3. foliar fertilizer Siarkomag + foliar fertilizer Bormax, 4. foliar fertilizer Siarkomag + foliar fertilizer Bormax + biostimulant Aminoplant.Results. Foliar fertilizers used in the experiment increased the thousand seed weight (on average in the range from 0.9% to 3.4%), seed yield (on average in the range from 2.5% to 18.5%), straw yield (on average in the range from 2.1% to 5.4%) and the harvest index (on average in the range from 4.4% to 7.5%). Of the compared cultivars the semi-dwarf cultivar (PX115) was characterized by the highest yield, while the lowest was from the population cultivar (Monolit). The highest thousand seed weight, main and secondary yields were obtained in the first year of the study which was characterized by a higher total rainfall during seed development and maturation of pods periods compared to the multi-year period, while the lowest levels of these factors was in the vegetation season of 2017–2018 with a humid autumn season and dry period during the flowering and maturation of pods.Conclusion. The most significant increase in the thousand seed weight and seed yield was obtained after applying mixed fertilizers containing sulphur, boron and amino acids. Additional foliar application of the biostimulant Aminoplant on plots with the population and semi-dwarf cultivars did not significantly increase the seed yield as compared to the control. A significant effect of the genetic factor and climatic conditions on the discussed traits has been demonstrated.

Forty-three candidate restorer lines of Brassica napus were evaluated for 11 agronomic traits for genetic variability and interrelationships among yield traits to find out yield contributing traits. A wide range of variability and character association was observed among the lines. The line BNR-017 took the lowest time for first (26.67 days) and 100% flowering (41.00 days) whereas BNR-031 (74.33 days) and BNR-034 (74.00 days) matured earlier. The lines BNR-022 (1.07m) and BNR-026 (1.02m) were found with the shortest plant stature and all other lines were in average plant height of around 1.35m. The lines BNR-039, BNR-011, BNR-001, BNR-013 and BNR-014 were found the best performer for number of pods per plant, seeds per pod and seed yield per plant. Estimates of genotypic and phenotypic coefficient of variation were high (≥30%) for seed yield per plant (30.52 and 33.13, respectively). High broad sense heritability was recorded for 1000-seed weight (97.69%), days to ripening (97.12%), days to first flowering (96.80%), days to 100% flowering (95.50%) and pod length (92.74%). Significant and negative correlation was observed between seed yield per plant and number of seeds per pod, -0.217* and -0.192*, respectively both at genotypic and phenotypic level, while the highest positive and significant genotypic (0.786**) and phenotypic (0.795**) correlation were found with pod length. Path co-efficient analysis showed the highest positive and direct phenotypic effect of number of seeds per pod (1.221) on seed yield per plant while days to first flowering had the maximum negative direct effect (-0.039). The results of genotypic and phenotypic coefficient of variation, heritability and genetic advance in percent of mean, correlation co-efficient and path coefficient revealed that pods per plant, pod length, seeds per pod and 1000-seed weight could be used as selection criteria to increase seed yield in rapeseed.
