Experimental observation of the ‘trapped rainbow’ in the visible is demonstrated using tapered hollow Bragg waveguides. These waveguides spatially disperse an input spectrum into its various frequency components and vertical out of plane radiation was observed at wavelength dependant positions along the entire length of the waveguide. The experimental observation is corroborated by a brief theoretical analysis and simulation. These devices form the foundation for future work involving integration into a micro-spectrometer for eventual lab-on-chip use.

A dual wavelength high power double-clad erbium/ytterbium-doped fiber laser with a narrowest spacing of 0.4 nm and a M2 value of close to unity is presented in the region of 1565 nm. This result can be realized with a significant improvement of the mode competition problem using a loop mirror as a comb filter. The wavelength region can also be varied using polarization controllers in the loop mirror. This dual-wavelength fiber laser with side mode suppression ratio (SMSR) of 40 dB is quite stable, and the output power variance is as low as 0.46 dB.

In this paper, we theoretically and experimentally investigated the controllable nonlinear focusing of the weak laser based on the induced nonlinear effects. We obtained an exact analytical solution to the weak laser beam when the high power laser beam is unchangeable during propagation. We also discussed the different pump parameters how to influence the focusing and experimentally partly verify the theoretical analysis. The results show that the focusing of weaker beam was jointly controlled by the power, width and wavelength of pump laser.
