In this paper, epoxy/SiO2 hybrid coating was successfully prepared through sol-gel technique, the structure and thermal properties of epoxy/SiO2hybrid coating were investigated. First, γ-isocyanatopropyltriethoxysilane “(KBE-9007)” was used to modify the epoxy resin so that the ethoxysilane could be grafted on the epoxy resin. Nano-SiO2 precursor was synthesized by tetraethoxysilane(TEOS) through sol-gel technique. Then the modified epoxy resin and the nano-SiO2 precursor were mixed for 4 hours to let the macromolecules of epoxy resin graft on the surface of nano-SiO2, and modified nano-SiO2 precursor was obtained. At last, epoxy/SiO2 hybrid coating was produced by using the modified nano-SiO2 precursor. The graft reaction was confirmed by the analyses of FT-IR. The analyses of XPS indicated that there are lots of SiO2 particles and Si-C covalent bonds on the surface of epoxy/SiO2 hybrid coating, they also suggested that most TEOS had changed into SiO2 particles and Si-C covalent bond had been formed between epoxy resin and SiO2. The analyses of SEM fracture surface image of epoxy/SiO2 hybrid coating showed that SiO2 particles dispersed in epoxy matrix homogeneously and the size of the particles was between 50nm and 100 nm. Thermoanalysis Instrument was employed to detect the thermal properties of epoxy coating and epoxy/SiO2 hybrid coating, the results indicated that the thermal decomposition temperature of epoxy/SiO2 hybrid coating is 21.7 °C higher than that of epoxy coating, the thermal properties of the epoxy/SiO2 hybrid coating were improved because of the introduction of nano-SiO2.

Traditionally ceramics have been shaped from powders and densified at temperatures close to their liquid point. New processing methods using various types of sols, gels, and organometallic precursors at low temperature which enable densificatlon at elevated temperatures well below their liquidus, hold the promise of producing ceramics and glasses of controlled and reproducible properties that are highly reliable for electronic, structural, space or medical applications. Ultrastructure processing of silicon alkoxides in acid medium and mixtures of Ludox HS-40 (120Å spheres from DuPont) and Kasil (38% K2O &62% SiO2) in basic medium have been aimed at producing materials with a range of well defined pore sizes (∼20-400Å) to study physical phenomena and materials behavior in well characterized confined geometries. We have studied Pt/C surface replicas of some of these porous sol-gels prepared at temperatures below their glass transition point.

A mesoporous titania structure has been prepared using the ultrasound-assisted sol-gel technique in order to find out a way to tailor its structure. The TiO2 obtained was compared to the same version of titania but synthesized by a conventional sol-gel method with the objective of understanding the effect of ultrasound in the synthesis process. All synthesis experiments were focused on the preparation of a titania photocatalyst. Thus, the anatase photocatalytic active phase of titania was proven by X-ray diffraction. Additionally, the ultrasonation treatment proved to increase the crystallinity of titania samples, being one of the requirements to having good photocatalytic activity for titania. The influence of surfactant/titania precursor weight ratio on the structural (XRD), textural (N2-sorption measurements), morphological (TEM), surface chemistry (FTIR) and optical properties (UVDR) was investigated. It was observed that the crystallite size, specific surface area, band gap energy and even photocatalytic activity was affected by the synergism occurring between cavitation effect and the surfactant/titania precursor weight ratio. The study yielded interesting great results that could be considered for further application of ultrasound to tailor mesoporous titania features via sol-gel soft template synthesis, against conventional sol-gel process.
