To improve the anti-corrosion properties of the AZ91D magnesium alloy, the electroless plating Ni-Co-P on the AZ91D magnesium alloy is necessary. The influences of additives (ammonium fluoride (NH4F) and hexamethylenetetramine (HMTA)) on deposition rate, corrosion rate, acid resistance, corrosion current, corrosion potential and webster hardness of electroless plating Ni-Co-P alloy coating, were investigated using electrochemical methods, etc. The results show that the deposition rate and corrosion resistance properties of electroless plating Ni-Co-P are obviously improved when the additives, including NH4F (2%) and hexamethylenetetramine (HMTA, 1%), are added into plating solution, respectively. In addition, the global particles in the Ni-Co-P coating become smaller with the addition of NH4F by comparison with no additives and coatings are dense, uniform and defect-free.

Steel-bonded cemented carbide GT35 was fabricated from natural ilmenite by in-situ synthesis and vacuum pressureless sintering. The thermodynamics of the synthesis process were analyzed. The results indicated that the stable phases were TiC and iron in the FeTiO3-C system. During the synthesis process, ilmenite was reduced by graphite via a series of titanium oxides to obtain hard phase (TiC) and the steel matrix as the ultimate products. The experimental results shown that GT35 had a reasonable phase composition and fine TiC particles embedded uniformly in the steel matrixes. The composites exhibited excellent mechanical properties: the relative density was higher than 97%, the hardness reached HRC 61.5 and the maximal bending strength was about 1270MPa.

Industrial deployment of magnesium alloys in most instances requires anti-corrosion coatings. Distinct from conversion coatings, the electro/electroless plating techniques are emerging as the common means of coating magnesium; however, more research is needed. A state-of-the-art review was undertaken with respect to aqueous plating systems (including pretreatment, under-coating, and electroplating), electroless plating (being treated individually, though it is used as undercoating for subsequent plating in some cases), non-aqueous plating systems (including high-temperature molten salts and ionic liquids), and novel plating methods. In addition to the performance assessment of various plated coatings on magnesium alloys, merits and demerits of existing plating techniques are discussed. Based on the literature to date, the practical issues faced in magnesium plating are raised, and possible advances discussed, providing some instructive guidelines for future work.

To improve the anti-corrosion properties of the aluminum, the electroless plating Ni-W-P on the aluminum is necessary. Investigation was made on the influences of additives (stabilizers and surfactants) on the deposition rate, weight loss corrosion rate, porosity, corrosion current, corrosion potential, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and webster hardness of electroless plating Ni-W-P alloy coating by electrochemical methods, etc. The results show that the deposition rate and anti-corrosion properties of electroless plating Ni-W-P are obviously improved when the stabilizer KIO3 (1mg/L) is added into plating solution. In addition, the Ni-W-P coating become more dense, uniform and defect-free with the addition of stabilizer KIO3 by comparison with no stabilizer. When the surfactant SDBS (50mg/L) added into bath, the corrosion resistance properties of electroless plating Ni-W-P alloy coating are also obtained.

In the present study, steel-bonded cemented carbide GT35 has been fabricated from natural ilmenite by in-situ carbothermic reduction and vacuum pressureless sintering. The effect of different carbon source on the mechanical properties and microstructure of GT35 composite was studied. The quality of the composite synthesized from natural graphite is higher than those from other carbon source. Some good results were obtained from experiments: the density is about 6.2g/cm3, and the bending strength is 1390MPa, which higher than that of other samples. The structures and ingredient of different carbon source were analyzed to elucidate their different performance in the reactions.
