Abstract Background Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) is a frequent disorder. Since patients with AIS are typically as active as age-matched controls and post-operative reduction in physical activity has detrimental effects on their well-being, return to sport (RTS) is an important perioperative concern. Aim of the present study is to review the literature concerning return to sport after spinal fusion for AIS. Methods This work was carried out in accordance with Preferential Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. The search was carried out in December 2020. Only peer-reviewed randomized controlled trials (RCTs), retrospective studies (RS), retrospective case series (RCS) and perspective cohort studies (PCS) were considered for inclusion. Results Six studies were included; only one of them was prospective. All the authors reported a time to RTS ranging between 6 and 18 months. Between 28 and 36.6% of all patients changed sport, choosing lower impact activities, mostly due to loss of flexibility of the spine. No complications due to return to play were noted. Conclusion According to current evidence, patients who received spinal arthrodesis for AIS can safely return to any sport, even those that require extreme levels of spinal and pelvic movements such as gymnastics and golf. As there is little evidence, however, of the spinal loading that occurs during such movements, there is a lack of scientific evidence-based recommendations or guidelines surgeons and other health care providers can follow. Prospective comparative studies are needed to investigate these biomechanical and clinical issues. Level of evidence Level III.

In this descriptive case series, we detail the theoretical basis, methodology, and impact of a small-scale pilot implementation of graphic medicine workshops as an innovative approach to well-being and resilience in the age of COVID-19 and increasing awareness of racial injustice. The data provided in this article are anecdotal and based on participation in the workshops. Images created during the workshops are also shared as examples of the types of reflection that graphic medicine can enable. The workshops themselves were designed collaboratively and are based on the theoretical principles of graphic medicine, narrative medicine, and racial and social justice. They were conducted as part of a larger wellness initiative and were offered to health care-focused faculty at our academic medical institution. Our findings suggest that this was a beneficial activity which helped participants to reflect and reconsider their experiences with the COVID-19 pandemic and surging awareness of racial injustice. Reflections also showed that drawings were correlated with ProQOL scores and may, in larger numbers, also help to mitigate or bring attention to issues of burnout in frontline providers. Drawings shared show the tremendous impact of COVID-19 and the simultaneous chaos and emptiness of practicing during dual pandemics. Our workshops engaged about 20 frontline health care providers and other health care faculty and highlight the utility of graphic medicine as a tool for building resilience and encouraging self-reflection. Further study is necessary, as is more rigorous analysis of the relationship between the graphics created and the ability to recognize and mitigate burnout.

Return from athletic injury can be a lengthy and difficult process. The injured athlete commonly receives care from several providers during rehabilitation. As their condition improves, injured athletes resume strength and conditioning programs and sport-specific activities in preparation for return to play. Until full medical clearance is provided to return to sport and the athlete is psychologically ready to return to play, the injured athlete remains a patient regardless of who is developing and supervising each component of the recovery process. An understanding of and commitment to the plan of care for each athlete, as well as communication among health care providers, strength and conditioning specialists, coaches, and the athletes, are essential to the safest and most efficient recovery from injury.

Abstract Background Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) is a common spinal deformity. Posterior spinal fusion remains an important surgical treatment for AIS. This study aims to determine the predictive factors for intraoperative blood loss in AIS surgery. Methods Patients who had undergone posterior spinal fusion for adolescent idiopathic scoliosis in a single university hospital were reviewed over a 7-year period. Predictive factors for intra-operative blood loss were studied by multivariate analysis to derive a regression model. Receiver operating characteristic analysis was performed to determine the cut-off values of factors contributing to significant intraoperative blood loss (≥500 ml). Results Two hundred and twelve patients were included. Intraoperative blood loss was found to be correlated with gender (rs = 0.30 (0.17–0.43)), preoperative hemoglobin level (rs = 0.20 (0.04–0.31)), preoperative Cobb angle (rs = 0.20 (0.02–0.29)), number of fused levels (rs = 0.46 (0.34–0.58)), operation duration (rs = 0.65 (0.54–0.75)), number of anchors (rs = 0.47 (0.35–0.59)), and p-value ranged from < 0.001 to < 0.05. Significant intraoperative blood loss was influenced by the male gender, operation duration greater than 257.5 min and more than 10 anchors used. Conclusions Male gender, increased operation duration and higher number of anchors predicted higher intra-operative blood loss.

Background:Responsive behaviours in dementia are associated with poor outcomes for the person with dementia (PWD) and caregiver burnout. Family caregivers need a variety of tools to manage responsive behaviours. The Baycrest Quick-Response Caregiver Tool was developed to provide caregivers with a tool that can be used in real time. In this study, the feasibility, impact, and effectiveness of this new tool were studied in family caregivers and health care providers (HCP) using quantitative and qualitative measures.Methods:Family caregivers were recruited and were asked to complete a pre-survey before being sent the link to the educational tool. One month after the telephone survey, caregivers were sent an online post-survey to gather their feedback on the tool and the impact of the tool on caregiver well -being. Healthcare providers were also recruited and reviewed the tool through an online feedback survey. The feasibility, impact, and effectiveness of the tool were assessed using quantitative and qualitative measures.Results:Caregivers had a moderate degree of and reported a high level of competence - these scores were maintained throughout the study. Caregivers reported that tool positively impacted their compassion towards the person with dementia (PWD), and that their interactions with improved. 100% of HCP who completed the feedback survey would recommend the tool to other HCP and to caregivers of PWD. The caregivers and HCP provided specific suggestions for improvement.Conclusions:The Baycrest Quick-Response Caregiver Tool was found to be feasible and helpful. It provides caregivers and HCP with an additional approach for responsive behaviours.
