Purpose: This randomized trial study compared the efficacy of pressure-biofeedback guided deep cervical flexor training as an adjunct with conventional exercise on pain and muscle performance in visually displayed terminal operators. Methods: A total of 50 (22 men and 28 women) patients with neck pain participated in the study. Patients were randomly placed into two groups: a biofeedback group (n = 25) and a control group (n = 25). The biofeedback group received pressure-biofeedback guided deep cervical flexor training program for 5 days a week for 6 weeks, whereas the control group received an exercise program only. Results: On intergroup comparisons, the deep cervical flexor performance in biofeedback group, at the end of 6th week was significantly higher than those of control group (p < 0.01). Pain intensity was also significantly reduced in biofeedback group when compared to control group at the end of trial (p < 0.004). Conclusion: The addition of pressure-biofeedback to a 6-week conventional program appeared to increase deep cervical flexor muscle performance, compared to the exercise program alone for people with reduced muscle performance.

The American National Standard for Human Factors Engineering of Visual Display Terminal Workstations, the first standard sponsored by the Human Factors Society, is in the final stages of acceptance as an American National Standard. This standard addresses the physical and perceptual aspects of the visual display terminal workstation as used in text processing, data entry, and data inquiry. Standards take on many different forms and fill a variety of needs. Basically a standard provides a reference. Some standards are written so that two systems may be designed to complement each other or fit together. Lightbulbs and fixtures designed to the same standard will work together. In the case of human factors standards one half of the system is already designed, the human. The variety of the design of this part of the system requires that human factors standards identify the parameters to be considered and the corresponding measurement methods needed to insure that the equipment is designed to fit the individual human. A good solution needs to be based on the particular set of circumstances at hand. The voluntary standards method, known as the American National Standards, provides a vehicle for specifying the appropriate parameters and measurement methods while incorporating the necessary flexibility required to insure good designs for individuals. The purpose of this panel session is to provide the society with an interactive session with representatives of the standards drafting committee. A brief history of the committee and its activities will be presented. The panelists will then describe the approach taken in each of the major sections, the mandatory requirements, and the elements the panelists consider to be of particular interest

The proficiency with which pilots can make takeoffs and landings using a periscope as the only source of outside visibility was studied under various conditions of flight. A detailed determination was made of the effects of variations in image magnification upon landing accuracy. Speed of transition to flight by periscope was related to flight experience. Effects of various weather, runway surface, and ambient lighting conditions upon flight by periscope were investigated.

This study investigated the effects of indoor lighting on occupants’ visual comfort and eye health and to contribute to the management and maintenance of buildings. The illuminance of the working plane and windows at Samsung Corporation Headquarters were measured, and 2744 healthy occupants of Samsung Corporation were surveyed regarding the indoor lighting environment via the company’s intranet for 1½ years. This building was certified with the highest ranking by Korea’s Green Building Council. The cumulative data reflected the management and maintenance of the building, such as screen-type shading devices automatically controlled by seasons and time, improvement of visual display terminal glare by the veiling reflection on monitors, efficiency of artificial lighting arrays, and so on. The data were analysed for occupants’ visual comfort and eye health. The result showed that daylighting could improve the occupants’ psychological health and productivity. The screen-type shading device could intercept direct sunlight and reduce annoyance glare. However, the indoor lighting and visual environment of the building were poor. After examining the questionnaire feedback concerning improvements, the occupants’ annoyance ratio was significantly reduced, and approximately 5% of the occupants’ annoyance ratio was deemed to be caused by personal characteristics related to the lighting of the environment.

Nighttime visibility is an important consideration in collision reconstruction and personal injury investigation. Decreased contrast in low ambient lighting conditions can greatly affect human perception and response. Because ambient lighting levels change rapidly at dawn and dusk, forensic investigators must have an accurate knowledge of the time of day and the cloud conditions at the time of the incident before initiating a nighttime visibility assessment. Previously, human factors experts attempting re-enactments at dawn or dusk have had to wait for sky conditions that match those at the time of the incident, making the investigation of those cases extremely difficult, if not unfeasible. In this study, an ambient illumination equivalency tool has been developed based on a database of time-lapse light meter readings collected by the authors. This new tool can be used to facilitate nighttime visibility assessments on any day by providing a time adjustment factor to account for the changes in ambient illuminance due to differences in the cloud conditions between the day of the incident and the day of the re-enactment.

Abstract This work aims at creating a universal software package for the development and testing of triangulation methods using structured lighting for measuring the three-dimensional geometry of objects in difficult ambient lighting conditions. As a result, a software package meeting the stated requirements is created. Lighting is based on the Fong model. A method for preloading objects is implemented to optimize the operation of the software package. An accelerated method for creating shadow maps is proposed and implemented. The developed software package is shown to successfully perform all required functions.
