Tetracycline HCl is one of the most commonly used antibiotics in fish farming that aims to control diseases caused by bacteria. The purpose of this study was to determine the presence and the level of tetracycline HCl antibiotic residue in freshwater fishes sold at the Segiri traditional market. The method used in this research was a standard addition ultraviolet spectrophotometry. The results showed that residue level of tetracycline HCl in freshwater fish is 192,067 μg/g – 257,409 μg/g. These result was far exceeded the maximum residue level of tetracycline class antibiotics in meat and dairy based on SNI 01-6366-2000 that limit the residue not higher than 0.1 μg/g

The comparative effects of ketoconazole, itraconazole, and fluconazole on the lipids of five Sporothrix schenckii strains were investigated. Quantitative analysis of lipids and sterols was completed, as well as qualitative analysis of sterols, by thin-layer chromatography and ultraviolet spectrophotometry. Growth of the S. schenckii isolates in the presence of azole derivative concentrations below the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) resulted in significant alterations in the lipid and sterol contents as compared with the control values. Furthermore, lanosterol was detected in these azole-treated cells. These results were in complete agreement with the proposed mechanism of action of azoles, which act by inhibiting ergosterol biosynthesis with a consequent accumulation of lanosterol. Concerning the MIC values, fluconazole was found to be the least effective drug. On the other hand, as determined from a comparison of the effects of the three azoles on the sterol content of the strains studied, no significant differences in efficacy were found among the tested drugs.Key words: Sporothrix schenckii, azole derivatives, lipids, sterols.

Objective: This work was aimed at formulating omeprazole tablets using afzelia gum as a binder that is capable of inhibiting the gastric degradation of the drug. Methods: Afzelia gum at different concentrations of 0, 5, 10, 15, 20 and 30% was used as a binder to formulate omeprazole tablets. The tablets were formulated by direct compression and the batches labelled F1 to F6 respectively. A batch containing 15% hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (F7) was also formulated. The tablets were characterized; and dissolution in a pH 1.2 dissolution medium over 120 min period was studied. Aliquots taken every 20 min were analyzed by ultraviolet spectrophotometry to determine the amount of drug released and not degraded. Results: Amounts of drug released and not degraded at time 120 min were 53.1%, 57.3%, 57.8%, 58.8%, 62.1%, 83.4% and 90.0% for F1 to F7 respectively. Conclusion: Afzelia gum at a concentration of 30% is suitable for use as a binder in tablet formulation of omeprazole to ensure substantial inhibition of gastric degradation of the drug.
