Mastitis is an inflammation of the mammary glands and in most cases it is caused by the presence of microorganisms. High mastitis rates in dairy cattle herds can cause an increase in total microorganism counts of bulk tank milk. The present paper was aimed at verifying whether the occurrence of mastitis in dairy cattle herds is reflected in raw-milk indicators of hygienic-sanitary quality. To observe the correlation among the analysed variables, we performed a logarithmical transformation (log10) of different indicator counts of raw milk and compared them with the occurrence of mastitis in dairy cattle herds. Few correlations were observed among mastitis cases in dairy cattle herds and the raw-milk indicators of hygienic-sanitary quality. We observed a negative correlation between the log10 of mesophilic aerobic plate counts and psychotropic aerobic plate counts when compared with the occurrence of no bacterial growth. The log10 of thermophilic aerobic plate counts and yeasts and mould aerobic plate counts presented a positive correlation with the cases of infectious mastitis and mastitis caused by Staphylococcus spp.

ABSTRACT In this study, 20 women with staphylococcal mastitis were randomly divided in two groups. Those in the probiotic group daily ingested 10 log10 CFU of Lactobacillus salivarius CECT5713 and the same quantity of Lactobacillus gasseri CECT5714 for 4 weeks, while those in the control one only ingested the excipient. Both lactobacillus strains were originally isolated from breast milk. On day 0, the mean staphylococcal counts in the probiotic and control groups were similar (4.74 and 4.81 log10 CFU/ml, respectively), but lactobacilli could not be detected. On day 30, the mean staphylococcal count in the probiotic group (2.96 log10 CFU/ml) was lower than that of the control group (4.79 log10 CFU/ml). L. salivarius CECT5713 and L. gasseri CECT5714 were isolated from the milk samples of 6 of the 10 women of the probiotic group. At day 14, no clinical signs of mastitis were observed in the women assigned to the probiotic group, but mastitis persisted throughout the study period in the control group women. In conclusion, L. salivarius CECT5713 and L. gasseri CECT5714 appear to be an efficient alternative for the treatment of lactational infectious mastitis during lactation.

Mastitis is a very costly problem causing the farmer financial loss because of: milk lost through decreased production, discarded milk, medicine cost, animals culled from the herd, and veterinarian fees. Mastitis is a luxury the farmer cannot afford, yet there are many that feel it is something they must live with. There are three areas of concern when confronted with a mastitis problem: (a) management of the herd, (b) adequate milking system, properly installed, and (c) sub-clinical or infectious mastitis. To be successful in correcting a mastitis problem requires use of all resources. A team approach is used and the team consists of the dairy plant fieldman and laboratory, milking machine serviceman, area extension dairy specialist, veterinarian and the farmer who desires to correct the problem. Every person on this team has an important part to play in solving the problem. The result of solving the problem is a financial gain for the farmer.
