The absence of good agricultural and manufacturing practices in the production and postharvest handling of fresh produce, such as green asparagus or green onions increase the contamination risk by biological hazards like Salmonella. The objective of this work was to investigate the efficacy of chlorine (200 and 250 ppm), hydrogen peroxide (1.5% and 2%), and lactic acid (1.5% and 2%) sanitisers during different exposure times (40, 60, and 90 s) on the reduction of <i>Salmonella enterica</i> subspecie <i>enterica</i> serovar Typhimurium in inoculated fresh green asparagus and green onions. Washing with clean water only reduced < 1 log10 CFU/g in both vegetables. The most effective sanitiser evaluated for fresh green asparagus and green onions disinfection appeared to be 2% lactic acid reducing <i>Salmonella</i> growth close to 3 log<sub>10</sub> CFU/g. Hydrogen peroxide was the least effective agent for <i>Salmonella</i> Typhimurium reduction. No effect was observed of the exposure time of inoculated product to sanitiser up to 90 seconds. These results confirm that lactic acid could be used as an alternative for fresh green asparagus and green onions sanitation.

In 2013, 4 partner organizations: Dietitians of Canada (DC); Ontario Fruit and Vegetable Growers Association; Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs; and Ontario Ministry of Education created “Fresh from the Farm” (FFF), a healthy fundraiser for Ontario Schools. FFF was designed to support the Ontario government’s School Food and Beverage Policy and Local Food Act and to provide a feasible alternative for less healthy fundraising options. This paper outlines the program successes and challenges over the 6 years of DC’s involvement. After 6 years, over 1700 schools successfully participated in FFF and over $2 million has been paid to Ontario farmers for product and distribution. The average participating school has generated $2040 in sales towards their fundraising efforts, equating to 770 kg (1700 lbs) of fresh produce per school. Schools reported high satisfaction with FFF, with over 90% of participating schools enrolling in subsequent years. The main reasons for satisfaction included: easy to implement, profitable, offers a healthy alternative to “traditional” fundraising programs, and provides great value for cost. The main challenges were logistics of sourcing and delivery, higher than anticipated costs that made the financial model less feasible than predicted, and competition from other fundraisers.

Prompt cooling to remove field heat is an essential part of proper postharvest handling for many types of fresh fruits and vegetables. Growers, consultants, and horticultural agents are often encouraged to collect cooling data (time vs. temperature) in order to compare cooling rates for different systems, containers, etc. These data can be misleading and confusing and seldom yield much useful information. With proper analysis, cooling data can yield a large amount of information. The problem is not the fault of the data, as much as the lack of simple methods to analyze these data. This presentation will demonstrate several simple methods to extract useful information from cooling data.

The identification and validation of novel drug–target combinations are key steps in the drug discovery processes. Cancer is a complex disease that involves several genetic and environmental factors. High-throughput omics technologies are now widely available, however the integration of multi-omics data to identify viable anticancer drug-target combinations, that allow for a better clinical outcome when considering the efficacy-toxicity spectrum, is challenging. This review article provides an overview of systems approaches which help to integrate a broad spectrum of technologies and data. We focus on network approaches and investigate anticancer mechanism and biological targets of resveratrol using reverse pharmacophore mapping as an in-depth case study. The results of this case study demonstrate the use of systems approaches for a better understanding of the behavior of small molecule inhibitors in receptor binding sites. The presented network analysis approach helps in formulating hypotheses and provides mechanistic insights of resveratrol in neoplastic transformations.
