Temperature-dependent metalation of the new hexadentate ligand (tris(5-(pyridin-2-yl)-1<i>H</i>-pyrrol-2-yl)methane; H3TPM) enables the selective synthesis of both mononuclear (<i>i.e. </i>Na(THF)4[Fe(TPM)], kinetic product) and trinuclear (<i>i.e.</i> Fe3(TPM)2, thermodynamic product) complexes. Exposure of Na(THF)4[Fe(TPM)] to FeCl2 or ZnCl2 triggers cluster expansion to generate homo- or heterometallic trinuclear complexes, respectively. The developed approach enables systematic variation of ion content in isostructural metal clusters via programmed assembly.

Knowledge of the function and structure of small metal clusters is one goal of research in catalysis. One important experimental parameter is cluster size. Ideally, one would like to produce metal clusters of regulated size in order to characterize size-dependent cluster properties.A source has been developed which is capable of producing microscopic metal clusters of controllable size (in the range 5-500 atoms) This source, the Multiple Expansion Cluster Source, with a Free Jet Deceleration Filter (MECS/FJDF) operates as follows. The bulk metal is heated in an oven to give controlled concentrations of monomer and dimer which were expanded sonically. These metal species were quenched and condensed in He and filtered to produce areosol particles of a controlled size as verified by mass spectrometer measurements. The clusters were caught on pre-mounted, clean carbon films. The grids were then transferred in air for microscopic examination. MECS/FJDF was used to produce two different sizes of silver clusters for this study: nominally Ag6 and Ag50.

Using semiempirical MNDO method of quantum chemistry the optimal geometries and corresponding electronic structures of [Pb3(OH)n]6-n model systems as well as of their hydrated [Pb3(OH)n(H2O)8-n]6-n analogues (n = 4, 5) are investigated. The most stable trinuclear lead(II) complexes present in aqueous solutions correspond to cyclo-(μ3-OH)(μ2-OH)3Pb32+, Pb(μ-OH)2Pb(μ-OH)2Pb2+, cyclo-(μ3-OH)2(μ2-OH)3Pb3+, Pb(OH)(μ-OH)2Pb(μ-OH)Pb(OH)+ and Pb(OH)(μ-OH)2Pb(μ-OH)2Pb+ systems. The key role of OH bridges (by vanishing direct Pb-Pb bonds) on the stability of individual isomers is discussed.

Calcined UTL-type germanosilicate was firstly reduced in a hydrogen atmosphere at an appropriate temperature. Then, air-calcination and water-washing procedures were performed to remove the Ge metal clusters or crystals originated from the reduction of skeleton germanium(iv) to yield pure zeolite phase of two daughter structures analogous to IPC-2 and IPC-6.
