AbstractAccurate evaluation, diagnosis, and management of mandibular fractures is essential to effectively restore an individual's facial esthetics and function. Understanding of surgical anatomy, fracture fixation principles, and the nuances of specific fractures with respect to various patient populations can aid in adequately avoiding complications such as malocclusion, non-union, paresthesia, and revision procedures. This article reviews comprehensive mandibular fracture assessment, mandibular surgical anatomy, fracture fixation principles, management considerations, and commonly encountered complications. In addition, this article reviews emerging literature examining 3-dimensional printing and intraoperative imaging.

The inflationary movement of 1974 presented a challenge for the time- honoured principles of wage-fixatian developed by the New South Wales system of industrial relations. An examination of the key wages decisions of the State Industrial Commission shows how recognition of the concept of "community-wide movement in wages" enabled the tribunal to flexibly deal with the new economic reality. However, it also demonstrates the difficulty exposed in the previous approach of segregating "economic" and "work value" factors in the wage assessment process—a difficulty ultimately recognized by the Commission.

Prophylactic plating of donor site in osteocutaneous radial forearm free flaps have demonstrated improvement in fracture rates. Previous series used conventional plating systems which rely on plate-bone friction forces to generate stability and can result in iatrogenic fractures if not accurately contoured. Locking plates have superior stability and do not require contouring. This retrospective series reports our experience using locking plate fixation augmented with calcium phosphate mineral cement. Twenty patients' records were reviewed; 13 were alive and reviewed clinically. Mean radiological follow-up was 28.2 months. Two deceased patients had donor site fractures diagnosed on the first postoperative radiograph. These fractures were related to technical fixation errors and failure to apply correct locking fixation principles. None of the other patients with proper locking fixation had fractures or metalwork related complications. We believe that locking fixation augmented with mineral cement can provide more biological stability and enhance restoration of bone structural strength.

Earlier generations of wrist arthroplasty were limited to low demand patients. Bone fixation problems, excessive wear, and adverse designs resulting in loosening, imbalance, and dislocation led to the withdrawal of a number of models. Contemporary wrist prostheses aim at replacing wrist arthrodesis in the majority of patients with radiocarpal destruction, including high demand cases. Contraindications are wrist imbalance, insufficient soft tissue, or bone stock and infection. Various designs, fixation principles, bearing materials, and articulations have been employed. Some of the devises (RE-MOTIONTM, Motec®) demonstrate promising short- to midterm results, and calls for cautious optimism.
