SynopsisPhotosynthetic productivity of phytoplankton in Loch Leven was studied over a 4-year period (1968–71), using the oxygen light and dark bottle technique. Marked seasonal changes in hourly and daily rates of gross photosynthetic productivity are described within the range 0·02 to 1·59 g O2/m2.h and 0·4 to 21·0 g O2/m2.day respectively. Hourly rates are shown to be relatively insensitive to variations in surface light intensity, whereas daily rates are influenced to a considerable extent by the duration of incident radiation (daylength).The phytoplankton itself exerts a dominant influence on underwater light penetration, accounting for ca 75 per cent of light extinction at highest crop densities. This self-shading effect contributes to the poor correlation observed between crop density and areal gross productivity. The chlorophyll a content per unit area in the euphotic zone often approached its estimated theoretical limit of 430 mg/m2.In general, increase in photosynthetic capacity (per unit content of chlorophyll a) accompanied increase in water temperature. During certain periods an inverse relationship between photosynthetic capacity and population density was evident. Reduction in photosynthetic capacity is attributed, in part, to the high pH values (> 9·5) with concomitant CO2-depIetion associated with dense phytoplankton crops.Estimates of net photosynthetic productivity were frequently zero or negative, even over periods when algal populations were increasing and dissolved oxygen and pH values were above their respective air-equilibrium values. Underestimation of gross photosynthesis due to photochemical oxidation, photorespiration or the use of stationary bottles could not account for this apparent anomaly. The most probable sources of error in the estimates of net photosynthetic productivity are discussed.

Utilizing airflow therapy, Schwartz (1976) has claimed an 89% success rate with stutterers following treatment and an 83% success rate at one year follow-up. Such claims have yet to be documented in the scientific literature. The purposes of this study were: (a) to investigate the effectiveness of a modified version of airflow therapy; (b) to examine the relative importance of its two main components—passive airflow and elongation of the first vowel spoken. The speech of two adult male stutterers with a lengthy history of stuttering, was assessed with spontaneous speaking and reading tasks. Results indicated marked improvement in both subjects' speech on the reading task was maintained at follow-up 10 weeks later. For spontaneous speech, results were generally weaker and less durable. Effects of the two treatment components were cumulative and did not allow determination of any differential effectiveness between components. Implications of these findings were considered and directions for future research discussed.

For studies on the relationship between photosynthetic capacity and yield components in sunflower a method for estimating leaf area was required. To this end use of the leaf area coefficient (LAC), i.e. the quotient area/(length X max. width), was evaluated. It was found that LAC may be a function of leaf position and plant density, depending on the cv. concerned. For the Russian cv. Armavirec, LAC was independent of leaf position and plant density. For the Rumanian hybrid HS 18, LAC was dependent on leaf position but not plant density. For the French hybrid INRA 4701, LAC depended on both leaf position and plant density, but even in this case, it was concluded that LAC can be a useful aid in leaf area estimation. Numerous minor skeletal variants have been described in the mouse (Grüneberg, 1963), other small mammals (Berry & Searle, 1963) and in man (Comas, 1960; Brothwell, 1963; Grüneberg, 1963). In genetically heterogeneous material such as man it is very difficult to sort out the factors causing these variants. However, in experimental animals such as the mouse the use of inbred strains and crosses derived from them permits a more detailed understanding of these factors, in particular the relative importance of heredity and environment. Grüneberg (1963) cites numerous references showing very great differences in the percentage incidence of many minor variants in mice between inbred strains and in some cases between hybrids. The conclusion is that much of this variation is genetic in origin. Even so, certain environmental factors have been shown to be of importance, such as maternal age, parity, maternal weight and maternal diet.
