We interpret a discrete, anomalous ~10-m-thick interval of the shallow-marine Middle to Late Devonian Valentine Member of the Sultan Formation at Frenchman Mountain, southern Nevada, to be a seismite, and that it was generated by the Alamo Impact Event. A suite of deformation structures characterize this unique interval of peritidal carbonate facies at the top of the Valentine Member; no other similar intervals have been discovered in the carbonate beds on Frenchman Mountain or in equivalent Devonian beds exposed in ranges of southern Nevada. The disrupted band extends for 5 km along the Mountain, and onto the adjoining Sunrise Mountain fault block for an additional 4+km. The interval displays a range of brittle, ductile and fluidized structures, and is divided into four informal bed-parallel units based on discrete deformation style and internal features that carry laterally across the study area. Their development is interpreted as the result of intrastratal compressional and contractional forces imposed upon the unconsolidated to fully cemented near-surface carbonate sediments at the top of the Valentine Member. The result is an assemblage of fractured, faulted, and brecciated beds, some of which were dilated, fluidized and injected to form new and complex matrix bands between beds. We interpret that the interval is an unusually thick and well displayed seismite. Because the Sultan Formation correlates northward to the Frasnian (lower Upper Devonian) carbonate rocks of the Guilmette Formation, and the Guilmette contains much thicker and more proximal exposures of the Alamo Impact Breccia, including seismites, we interpret the Frenchman Mountain seismite to be a far-field product of the Alamo Impact Event. Accompanying ground motion and deformation of the inner reaches of the Devonian carbonate platform may have resulted in a fall of relative sea level and abrupt shift to a salt-pan paleoenvironment exhibited by the post-event basal beds of the directly overlying Crystal Pass Member.

A comparative reading of Freud’s canonical case study “From the History of an Infantile Neurosis” (1918) and the memoir written by the protagonist of that study, Sergei Pankejeff, known as the Wolf Man (1971a), centers on the complex matrix of meanings embodied in the act of lifting the veil. The neurotic symptom of a veil seemingly in front of the analysand’s eyes is interpreted by Freud as a repetition of his birth in a Glückshaube (German for “caul,” literally a “lucky hood”). The veil is represented as an ambivalent object both for Freud and for Pankejeff, who are enticed by the sense of a final truth behind the veil yet constantly doubt the possibility of grasping it. For Freud, psychoanalysis is the very process of lifting the veil, yet his analysand remained for him an unsolved riddle. Pankejeff, in a volume dedicated to his identity as the Wolf Man (Gardiner 1971a), created an autobiographical text that deliberately avoids telling the story of the analysand, thus drawing a veil over his story. The paradox embodied in lifting the veil is discussed in relation to Walter Benjamin’s distinction between materiality and truth and his notion of the inherent unity of the veil and the veiled (1925).

Abstract The paper presents a quick method for the quantification of nickel species in spent FFC catalysts; the quantification of known quantities NiO and $$\hbox{NiAl}_2\hbox{O}_{4}$$ NiAl 2 O 4 is first done in a matrix of fresh zeolite Y, and then in a complex matrix, similar to the one of a real spent catalyst. The method is carefully checked and the errors in the quantification are critically evaluated. After the validation of the method with known quantities of NiO, well below the law limit for direct re-use, a set of real spent catalysts (representative of a period of 12 months) is analysed. AbstractThe report presents the results of the development of dental films with ketorolac trometamine based on the natural biodegradable polymers from the groups of sodium alginates and xanthan gums in combination with lightly crosslinked acrylic polymer carbopol. Physicochemical properties, such as moisture, mucoadhesion, thickness, tensile strength, disintegration in phosphate buffer were determined in obtained samples of this dosage form. A comparison of physicochemical properties of experimental samples and commercial model of dental film has allowed establishing the perspective composition of complex matrix of films with ketorolac trometamine for use in dentistry.

Several new distributional properties of the distribution of the condition number of a complex Gaussian matrix are given. Based on such distributional properties, some characterizations of the distribution are given by truncated moment, order statistics and upper record values.

Abstract Bounds on the spectrum of Schur complements of subdomain stiffness matrices with respect to the interior variables are key ingredients of the convergence analysis of FETI (finite element tearing and interconnecting) based domain decomposition methods. Here we give bounds on the regular condition number of Schur complements of “floating” clusters arising from the discretization of 3D Laplacian on a cube decomposed into cube subdomains. The results show that the condition number of the cluster defined on a fixed domain decomposed into m × m × m cube subdomains connected by face and optionally edge averages increases proportionally to m. The estimates support scalability of unpreconditioned H-FETI-DP (hybrid FETI dual-primal) method. Though the research is most important for the solution of variational inequalities, the results of numerical experiments indicate that unpreconditioned H-FETI-DP with large clusters can be useful also for the solution of huge linear problems.
