In the pond Strašík by Libouň (Czech Republic, WGS 84: 49°37'50"N, 14°49'30"E) 14 species of water molluscs were documented by the research executed on 8 June 2001: Radix peregra, Lymnaea stagnalis, Anisus vortex, Bathyomphalus contortus, Gyraulus albus, Gyraulus crista, Hippeutis complanatus, Musculium lacustre, Pisidium casertanum, Pisidium milium, Pisidium nitidum, Pisidium obtusale, Pisidium personatum, Pisidium subtruncatum. The basic characteristics of the community were determined: quantitative composition and dominance. The index of the concentrated dominance modified according to Simpson (c = 0,33) was counted and compared with available data. The pond fauna was compared to the fauna of other examined ponds in Podblanicko. The total of 12 ponds were examined in this region or its closest surroundings so far and 21 species of water molluscs were found in them. The pond Strašík, analysed in this study, is richest in species variety, as it has 14 species, the least occupied are the ponds Splav by Bystřice (2 species) and the first pond above the pond Utopenec by Vlašim (3 species). In the case of these ponds the result is probably due to the fact that they are relatively little known. The species Anisus vortex, Lymnaea stagnalis and Gyraulus albus have the highest frequency of occurrence in the ponds examined so far in Podblanicko, the least frequent are the species Bithynia tentaculata, Acroloxus lacustris and Pisidium personatum. The similarity of the species composition of the ponds fauna was evaluated according to the Jaccard’s index. The pond most similar to the Strašík pond analyzed in this study is from the point of view of the species presence the pond Utopenec on the stream Orlina (8 and 12), which is situated nearby.

It was investigated and analyzed about the species composition of phytoplankton, and their relations to environmental factors sampled in spring, summer and autumn in 2001-2011 in Fuxian Lake (24o 21'~24o 38' N, 102o 49'12 "~102o 57'26"E). The phytoplankton from Fuxian lake included 78 species belong to 41 genera 25 family, 7 phyla. Chlorophyta was predominant, with consisted of 43.5% of total species number. Species number of phytoplankton appeared visible monthly variation. The main predominant phytoplankton species was Mougeotia bloodlei, which accounted for 42.94%~84.94% of total cell density of phytoplankton. The community structures of phytoplankton were consist of Mougeotia bloodlei, Chroococcus spp., Cyclotella spp., Ceratium hirundinella and Dinobryon sertularia.

Abstract The seasonal variations in species composition of set net fisheries were investigated in the eastern coast of Korea, from 2007 to 2008. In total, 51 species were found that were classified into 15 orders and 33 families. The water temperature of the study area was 0.1–2.1 °C during the study period, which was higher than the average water temperature in the last decade. Monthly variation in the number of species peaked twice, in May (spring) and November (autumn) when the water temperature increased and decreased, respectively, and monthly variation in the number of individuals showed a remarkably high trend in winter and autumn and was mainly caused by large migratory species. Based on the cluster analysis of the 18 most dominant species with more than 0.4% of the total number of individuals, we divided the species composition and community structure into three groups: fishes with temporary appearance (Group A), fishes with long-term appearance (Group B), and dominant pelagic fishes appearing with long-term appearance (Group C). We could conclude that seasonal variation in the fish community structure was mainly caused by pelagic migration of species under high water temperature conditions during the study period.

The excellent preservation of the molluscan fauna from the Gosport Sand (Eocene) at Little Stave Creek, Alabama, has made it possible to describe the preserved color patterns of 15 species. In this study the functional significance of these color patterns is tested in the context of the current adaptationist controversy. The pigment of the color pattern is thought to be a result of metabolic waste disposal. Therefore, the presence of the pigment is functional, although the patterns formed by the pigment may or may not have been adaptive. In this investigation the criteria proposed by Seilacher (1972) for testing the functionality of color patterns were applied to the Gosport fauna and the results compared with life mode as interpreted from knowledge of extant relatives and functional morphology. Using Seilacher's criteria of little ontogenetic and intraspecific variability, the color patterns appear to have been functional. However, the functional morphology studies indicate an infaunal life mode which would preclude functional color patterns. Particular color patterns are instead interpreted to be the result of historical factors, such as multiple adaptive peaks or random fixation of alleles, or of architectural constraints including possibly pleiotropy or allometry. The low variability of color patterns, which was noted within species and genera, suggests that color patterns may also serve a useful taxonomic purpose.
