The article analyzes the motive of the Cossack mode of life in the works of an outstanding representative of Kalmyk literary Diaspora, a publicist, a journalist, a public figure, an officer of the Cossack regiment of the Don army, a participant of the Civil War in Russia, a bearer of living history belonging to the first wave of Russian emigration. As a result of an objective study of definite specific features of the traditional way of life of Don Kalmyks-Cossacks in the works of S.Balykov, the pattern of the writer's appeal to the realities of the traditional Cossack mode of life of Don Kalmyks is examined, the principles of its representation on the material of the novel “Zalamdzha” are revealed, a variety of phenomena related to the the most important concepts of everyday life, mode of life and foundations of the Don Cossacks-Kalmyks are analyzed. The realities of the national mode of life and the foundations of Kalmyk Cossacks are fully reflected in the writer's works. The consideration of preceding events having made an impact on the writer's works and his interaction with common-literary process gives us reasons to presume the extreme importance of historical cultural phenomena, the reflection of which has become the result of S. Balykov's immediate flashbacks.

Abstract Bivalves protect themselves from predators using both mechanical and behavioral defenses. While their shells serve as mechanical armor, bivalve shells also enable evasive behaviors such as swimming and burrowing. Therefore, bivalve shell shape is a critical determinant of how successfully an organism can defend against attack. Shape is believed to be related to shell strength with bivalve shell shapes converging on a select few morphologies that correlate with life mode and motility. In this study, mathematical modeling and 3D printing were used to analyze the protective function of different shell shapes against vertebrate shell-crushing predators. Considering what life modes different shapes permit and analyzing the strength of these shapes in compression provides insight to evolutionary and ecological tradeoffs with respect to mechanical and behavioral defenses. These empirical tests are the first of their kind to isolate the influence of bivalve shell shape on strength and quantitatively demonstrate that shell strength is derived from multiple shape parameters. The findings of this theoretical study are consistent with examples of shell shapes that allow escape behaviors being mechanically weaker than those which do not. Additionally, shell elongation from the umbo, a metric often overlooked, is shown to have significant effects on shell strength.

Dwarfish males are a relatively common phenomenon in animals, occurring in various taxa, most often when females conduct a sedentary life mode. Such males, beside smaller size, exhibit a series of morphological and anatomical alterations, mostly structural reductions. Here we present the case of the alimentary tract of dwarfish males of the aphid genus Stomaphis where, despite it being structurally normal, it does not serve its original function due to a lack of mouthparts. Cross-sections through mounted specimens revealed also that nervous and reproductive systems are fully developed. The question arises as to whether such a system may be considered vestigial, or an exaptation with secondary function shifted to play new primary function. Because the aphid genus Stomaphis is known from the fossil record to have existed for at least ca. 14 My and all of its species have dwarfish, arostral males, this indicates that it may be too short a period for reduction of the whole system. It also raises questions about the mechanisms of loss of the primary functionality of the whole physiological unit, and the influence of such modification on the evolution of its phylogenetic successors. Secondary functions of the tract are speculated to be responsible for its endurance.

AbstractFamily-level taxonomic concepts for Paleozoic Asteroidea are problematic; data availability for the family Urasterellidae, however, is judged sufficient for familial reappraisal. The survey cannot be fully comprehensive because certain available names are founded on very limited material, with specimens widely scattered among collections. Recognized urasterellid genera include Urasterella Schuchert, 1914; Anthroosasterias Blake, 2017; Meturaster Blake, Guensburg, and Lefebvre, 2016; Salteraster Stürtz, 1893; Staurasterias Blake, 2017; Ulrichaster Spencer, 1950; and Pegoasterella pompom n. gen. n. sp. Other available generic names are held in abeyance. The name Urasterella has approached form-genus status, an outcome exacerbated by incomplete understanding of the type species. Urasterella huxleyi (Billings, 1865) is reassigned to Anthroosasterias. Relatively large specimen suites for Anthroosasterias huxleyi (Billings, 1865) and Salteraster grandis (Meek, 1872) enable some interpretation of urasterellid intrataxon variation, ontogenetic change, and life mode. Morphologic changes accompanying ontogeny of A. huxleyi are argued as favoring a shift from substrate surface feeding to feeding through extension of arms into the water column in a manner comparable to that seen among extant Forcipulatida and ophiurans.UUID: http://zoobank.org/82d2eca7-55e0-42ed-a164-c666652e3972

Synopsis A substantial body of research has been accumulated around ammonoids over several decades. A core aspect of this research has been attempting to infer their life mode from analysis of the morphology of their shells and the drag they incur as that shell is pushed through the water. Tools such as Westermann Morphospace have been developed to investigate and scaffold hypotheses about the results of these investigations. We use computational fluid dynamics to simulate fluid flow around a suite of 24 theoretical ammonoid morphologies to interrogate systematic variations within this space. Our findings uphold some of the long-standing expectations of drag behavior; conch inflation has the greatest influence over ammonoid drag. However, we also find that other long-standing assumptions, such as oxyconic ammonoids being the best swimmers, are subject to substantial variation and nuance resulting from their morphology that is not accounted for through simple drag assessment.

Internet of Things (IoT) is a hot and emerging topic nowadays. In the world of today, all kinds of devices are supposed to be connected and all types of information are exchanged. This makes human daily life easier and much more intelligent than before. However, this life mode is vulnerable to several security threats. In fact, the mobile networks, by nature, are more exposed to malicious attacks that may read confidential information and modify or even drop important data. This risk should be taken in consideration prior to any construction of mobile networks especially in the coming 5G technology. The present paper aims to provide a contribution in securing such kinds of environment by proposing a new protocol that can be implemented in ad hoc networks.

A fungus within the genus Phaeosphaeriaceae was isolated from brown leaf spot samples of Dracaena serrulata Baker (Yemen dragon tree) collected from Oman Botanic Garden, Muscat, Oman. Detailed morphological studies showed that this strain fits well within the species concept of the genus Phaeosphaeriopsis. Multilocus phylogeny based on LSU, ITS and TEF confirmed its uniqueness and supports its recognition as a new species, Phaeosphaeriopsis omaniana. Geography, pathogenic life mode and subglobose, smooth and brown conidia of the newly described species clearly differ from those of phylogenetically related species. A comprehensive description and illustrations of the new species, P. omaniana is provided and discussed with comparable taxa.
