<p>In this study, B-Cyclodextrinn polymerized with beetroot fibers (Bio-polymer), was prepared and applied to the removal of organic and inorganic contaminants from wastewater. An investigation into the use of cross-linked cyclodextrin polyurethanes copolymerised with beetroot fibers as adsorbents for organic pollutants and heavy metals has yielded very useful results which may have an impact in future water treatment applications.</p> The Biopolymer was tested in water contaminated by dyes, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) and heavy metals. The effectiveness to eliminate dyes such as methylene blue and Rhodamine B with concentrations around 100 ppm was more than 99%, while the pyrene,which was chosen as an example among PAHs, showed a potential of elimination exceeding the 97% for solutions of 10 ppm. Also, heavy metals, such as Lead, Zn, and Cu, were tested and showed an efficacy exceeding the 99.8%. The results indicated that the biopolymer developed in this study has the potential to be a promising material for the removal of mixed pollutants from industrial wastewater or from contaminated groundwater.

ABSTRAK Keberadaan logam berat Cu dalam limbah industri dapat berakibat buruk bagi lingkungan. Gracilaria verrucosa ditujukan sebagai bahan alternatif yang ramah lingkungan pengganti polimer sintetis untuk proses biosorpsi logam berat Cu. Pada penelitian ini dipelajari karakteristik kemampuan penjerapan dari biopolimer Gracilaria verrucosa terhadap logam berat Cu. Pada proses biosorpsi Cu2+ kapasitas biosorpsi maksimum sekitar 38.34 mg/gr. Kapasitas biosorpsi dicapai pada t=15 menit dan pH larutan= 4. Data kesetimbangan proses biosorpsi ini dapat dimodelkan dengan persamaan Langmuir. Keberadaan NH4+ dalam larutan tidak terlalu berpengaruh terhadap proses biosorpsi logam berat Cu. Hasil penelitian disimpulkan bahwa biopolimer Gracilaria verrucosa memiliki potensi sebagai bahan alternatif dalam proses pemisahan trace element dengan kapasitas biosorpsi yang tinggi. Kata kunci : Gracilaria verrucosa, alga merah, biosorpsi  logam berat ABSTRACT The presence of heavy metals such as Cu in industrial wastewater can lead to the environment contamination. The algae Gracilaria verrucosa is intended to be the environmentally friendly polymer used in biosorption process of heavy metals Cu. In this research, the characteristics and adsorption ability of biopolymers Gracilaria verrucosa against heavy metals Cu was studied respectively. Results shown that the maximum biosorption capacity of Gracilaria verrucosa in adsorbing Cu2+ was 38.34 mg/gr at t = 15 min and pH = 4. Equilibrium data of biosorption process can be modeled by Langmuir equation. The presence of NH4 + in solution does not significantly affected the biosorption process of heavy metals Cu. It can be concluded that biopolymer Gracilaria verrucosa has potential as an alternative material with high biosorption capacity in removing trace elements. AbstractInvestigation of heavy metals (HM) fractions in soils irrigated with wastewater (WW) would ascertain their bioavailability and contamination level in soils. This study investigated HM fractions in soils after long-term WW irrigation. WW irrigation profoundly affected HM fractions in soil. The ranges of HM concentrations in soils irrigated with WW were apparently wide. All fractions were significantly higher in the fields irrigated with industrial WW than rain-fed fields. HM concentrations varied in the soils as Pb &gt; Cu &gt; Ni &gt; Zn &gt; Fe &gt; Cd &gt; Mn after WW irrigation. In rainfed fields, HM concentrations differed in soils as Fe &gt; Zn &gt; Mn &gt; Pb &gt; Cd &gt; Cu &gt; Ni. The HM fractions were dominant in the residual form followed by oxides bound and carbonate associated fractions in WW-irrigated soils. Lower contents of HM in the soil were obtained in the exchangeable fraction. WW irrigation resulted in the transformation of HM into different fractions as residual &gt; oxide associated &gt; carbonate associated &gt; organically bound &gt; exchangeable form. Repeated WW irrigation increased pH values of the soils. The higher EC of soil indicated an accumulation of salts in the soils due to WW irrigation. Mitigation of HM contamination in Hattar industrial effluent is required before irrigation.

The primary objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA) and citric acid (CA) on Mirabilis jalapa L. growth and phytoextraction of heavy metals from the multi-metal contaminated soil. The results showed that the application of CA (5 and 8 mmol/kg) and EDTA (5 mmol/kg) increased plant growth, while when the concentration of EDTA was up to 8 mmol/kg, the shoot biomass significantly decreased relative to the control plants (P &lt; 0.05); it suffered 48.1%, 53.1%, 58.9%, and 78.2% reduction, respectively, compared to CK, CA-5, CA-8, and EDTA-5. EDTA was more effective than CA at increasing heavy metal uptake in aerial parts of the plants, the shoot concentrations of Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn increased by 0.55, 3.08, 3.28, and 1.0-fold in the 8 mmol/kg EDTA-treated soils relative to the treatment of 8 mmol/kg CA. The maximum of Cd, Cu, and Pb phytoextraction and remediation factor (RF) were found with 5 mmol/kg EDTA treatment. For Zn, 8 mmol/kg EDTA was most efficient in increasing Zn accumulation in aboveground of M. jalapa.
