Volume or biomass estimates of downed woody debris are crucial for numerous applications such as forest carbon stock assessment, biodiversity assessments, and more recently for environmental evaluations of biofuel harvesting practices. Both fixed-area sampling (FAS) and line-intersect sampling (LIS) are used in forest inventories and ecological studies because they are unbiased and accurate methods. Nevertheless, most studies and inventories take into account only coarse woody debris (CWD, >10 cm in diameter), although fine woody debris (FWD) can account for a large part of the total downed biomass. We compared the LIS and FAS methods for FWD volume or biomass estimates and evaluated the influence of diameter and wood density measurements, plot number and size. We used a Test Zone (a defined surface area where a complete inventory was carried out, in addition to FAS and LIS), a Pilot Stand (a forest stand where both LIS and FAS methods were applied) and results from 10 field inventories in deciduous temperate forest stands with various conditions and amounts of FWD. Both methods, FAS and LIS, provided accurate (in trueness and precision) volume estimates, but LIS proved to be the more efficient. Diameter measurement was the main source of error: using the mean diameter, even by diameter class, led to an error for volume estimates of around 35%. On the contrary, wood density measurements can be simplified without much influence on the accuracy of biomass estimates (use of mean density by diameter class). We show that the length and number of transects greatly influences the estimates, and that it is better to apply more, shorter transects than fewer, longer ones. Finally, we determined the optimal methodology and propose a simplification of some measurements to obtain the best time-precision trade-off for FWD inventories at the stand level.

Recreational camping in wilderness areas causes a number of biophysical impacts, including loss of woody debris through campfires. Although extensive research has documented trampling impacts to vegetation, few studies have explored the extent of woody material depletion. This study adapted planar transect methods to measure the relative loss of fine (<0.6 cm), small (0.6 to 2.5 cm), medium (2.6 to 7.6 cm) and large (>7.6 cm) diameter materials in three concentric rings extending 0–5 m, 5–10 m and 10–15 m from the centre of 58 campsites in different environments ranging in elevation from 1250 to 2225 m in the Cascades Mountains in Oregon, USA. Compared to matched controls, losses were greatest for small (40%) and medium-sized (63%) materials, but were evident for fine (25%) and large (30%) materials as well. Surprisingly, depletion (across all sizes) was no greater in the centre of sites than in the outer measurement ring, even though the outer ring was often in intact vegetation. This suggests that impacts on woody debris extend beyond those impacts to vegetation typically monitored at campsites. Such recreational impacts to woody debris have rarely been systematically described. However, research on woody debris removal related to forest management indicates possible ecological effects of fuelwood consumption.

OO Parque Estadual da Pedra Selada, localizado no sul fluminense, possui atrativos turísticos muito interessantes, sendo o pico da Pedra Selada e os percursos para a Pedra Boca do Sapo, os mais conhecidos. Os objetivos do trabalho foram caracterizar e mapear as trilhas para localizar os pontos de limitações e os pontos de fragilidade ecoturística para auxiliar a gestão da Unidade de Conservação no planejamento, no manejo e na conservação da área. Para isso, foram mapeados com auxílio do GPS, os atrativos, os pontos de cicatrizes de erosão e na identificação das áreas sem manejo. O geoprocessamento foi utilizado em conjunto com a metodologia do Índice de Atratividade de Pontos Interpretativos; o que permitiu localizar os pontos de fragilidade ecoturística. Esse estudo foi importante porque poderá contribuir com a Unidade de Conservação na implantação do Plano de Manejo e, auxiliar a gestão do Parque Estadual da Pedra Selada na preservação dos atrativos, podendo melhorar a visita dos turistas, a renda da população local e, principalmente, minimizar os impactos negativos na biota. Evaluation of the potential and limitations of the Sealed Stone trail and paths for the Pedra Boca do Sapo (Mouth Frog Stone) in the ‘Pedra Selada’ (Sealed Stone) State Park (RJ, Brazil) ABSTRACT The state Park off Pedra Selada, located on the south of Rio de Janeiro’s state, has very interesting touristic attractions, one of them being the Pedra Selada and the paths to the Boca do Sapo Rock, those are the most famous ones. The focus of this study were characterize and map the trails to locate both the limitation and the vulnerability of those eco touristic spots it was done to assist management of the Conservation Unit on planning, forest management and conservation of the area. In order to do those attractions were mapped with the help off a GPS the spots of erosion scars and on the identification of areas without forest management. The geoprocessing was used in conjunction with the attractiveness Index methodology points Interpretive; what me possible to locate the vulnerable eco touristic. This study was important because it can contributes with the Conservation Unit at the implementation off the Forest management Plan and assist on the managing of the state Park off Pedra Selada preserving attractions making both the tourist visit and the income of the local population better and manly , minimize negative impacts on environment. As main result and conclusions, the study contributed to help management of the State Park off Pedra Selada identifying areas with low, medium and high vulnerability ecotourism; the early diagnosis of the areas that may suffer impacts due to visitation and also contribute to the establishment of the buffer zone of the Conservation Unit in the region of Boca do Sapo Rock. AbstractEastern spotted skunks (Spilogale putorius) have suffered a dramatic range-wide decline leading to concern that the species is likely vulnerable to extinction, but were recently discovered to persist in a portion of the southern Appalachian Mountains (United States). For 2 years we investigated habitat selection by eastern spotted skunks to develop an understanding of their habitat and conservation needs in northwestern South Carolina. We used a discrete choice modeling framework to evaluate vegetative and topographic features that we predicted would influence rest site selection by male and female spotted skunks. Using VHF telemetry, we tracked 15 spotted skunks (10 males and 5 females) to 215 day-time rest sites between the months of April and August. Spotted skunks selected rest sites in close proximity to drainage channels, where the relative probability of selection decreased 18% and 50% with every 20-m increase in distance to a drainage channel for males and females, respectively. Relative probability of selection by female spotted skunks increased 30% for every one-unit increase in coarse woody debris (CWD), and relative probability of selection by male spotted skunks increased 25% for every 10% increase in understory cover. These results are consistent with previous studies that have identified cover as important for protection from predators; however, we additionally identified CWD and drainage channels as important to habitat selection by spotted skunks. These latter attributes are likely selected based on prey availability, but alternate ecological functions of these features warrant further investigation. Preservation of understory vegetation and CWD within drainage networks might benefit conservation of eastern spotted skunks in the southern Appalachians.

Transport and processing of allochthonous material is crucial for trophic pathways in headwater streams. Freshwater crayfish are known to affect and exploit the break-down of in-stream terrestrial plant material into detritus. We recorded Euastacus armatus (Murray River crayfish) individuals feeding on discrete patches of allochthonous material within an unregulated section of the Goodradigbee River, an upland stream in temperate Australia. Despite suggestions of aggressive territoriality, E. armatus were observed by remote and manual underwater filming to feed in non-aggressive aggregations on these piles of fine woody debris and leaf litter. On the basis of observations of 25 individuals found in the vicinity of the allochthonous patches, this population comprised mostly female individuals at smaller sizes of maturity than has been recorded for lowland populations of E. armatus. Our study confirms the importance of concentrated allochthonous food patches for detritivores, and points to the important trophic linkage between terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems via a widespread and iconic freshwater invertebrate. Moreover, these non-aggressive feeding aggregations of E. armatus challenge notions of aggression in this species that have been developed in small-scale aquarium studies.
