The magnetic phase transitions and magnetocaloric properties of Gd5Si0.4In3.6 compound have been investigated. Magnetothermal measurements performed at different conditions reveal that the sample undergoes two magnetic phase transitions. One is a second-order transition from paramagnetic to ferromagnetic state at about 197 K, the other is a first-order transition when the temperature is reduced to 75 K. The magnetocaloric effect around Curie temperature (TC) was calculated in terms of isothermal magnetic entropy change by using Maxwells equation, which remains over a quite wide temperature span of 70 K between the temperature region from160 to 240 K, and thus makes this material attractive for magnetic refrigerator applications.

The Stockbargard – Bridgman method yielded single crystals Mn0.99Fe0.01As. The effect of an external magnetic field with an intensity of up to 10 T on phase transitions in the single crystal Mn0.99Fe0.01As is studied. It is established that the magnetostructural phase transition in Mn0.99Fe0.01As is accompanied by a change in the entropy ΔSm, which is due to the transformation of the crystal structure. At temperatures above the temperature of the magnetostructural transition Tu = 290 K, the existence of an unstable magnetic structure is obtained. The magnetocaloric characteristics of the material under study are determined by an indirect calculation method based on the Maxwell thermodynamic relations and the Clapeyron – Clausius equation.

Magnetic and magnetocaloric properties of the amorphous Fe92−xZr8Bx ribbons were studied in this work. Fully amorphous Fe89Zr8B3, Fe88Zr8B4, and Fe87Zr8B5 ribbons were fabricated. The Curie temperature (Tc), saturation magnetization (Ms), and the maximum entropy change with the variation of a magnetic field (−ΔSmpeak) of the glassy ribbons were significantly improved by the boron addition. The mechanism for the enhanced Tc and −ΔSmpeak by boron addition was studied.
