ABSTRACT Objectives: to map the benefits of Augmentative and Alternative Communication in ventilated adults in Intensive Care Unit and identify strategies used. Methods: a Scoping Review was carried out according to the Joanna Brigs Institute Protocol. The research question was: “In adult patients ventilated in Intensive Care Units, what are the benefits of Augmentative and Alternative Communication?”. An article research was carried out at PubMed, EBSCOhost and B-On databases. It was held between October and November 2018, from 2013 to 2018, in Portuguese and in English. Results: 61 references were obtained. After selection according to the inclusion criteria, 7 articles were analyzed. Conclusions: studies enunciate Augmentative and Alternative Communication as a strategy to enhance communication, describing methods and tools. There is no agreement on the most effective tool.

BACKGROUND: Neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) parents are at risk for psychological distress and impaired mental health, and statistics related to parent psychological distress vary. OBJECTIVE: To determine the scope of literature regarding the mental health and psychosocial well-being of parents in the NICU. DESIGN: A scoping review within the Arksey and O’Malley framework and the SEM was undertaken to answer, “What factors contribute to parent’s mental health in the NICU?” A systematic review of the literature was performed using the PRISMA methodology. RESULTS: Common socioeconomic factors and infant and parent characteristics may place parents at a greater risk for developing distress. History of mental illness, family cohesion, birth trauma, altered parenting role, gestational age, birth weight, and severity of prematurity/illness emerged as themes. CONCLUSION: Further research is required to provide a standard for the screening and assessment of parents’ mental health and psychosocial well-being during a NICU hospitalization. The experiences of nonbirth parents in the NICU should be explored to examine the effects of the hospitalization on all types of parents.

Background: The intensive care unit (ICU) is that part of the hospital where critically ill patients that require advanced airway, respiratory and haemodynamic supports are usually admitted. Intensive care unit admissions which aim at achieving an outcome better than if the patients were admitted into other parts of the hospital however come at a huge cost to the hospital, the personnel and patients’ relations.Objective: To audit the 5 year bed occupancy rate and outcome of medicine and surgical patients admitted into the ICU of the Chittagong Medical College Hospital, Chittagong, Bangladesh.Design: A 5 years retrospective study (Record review) from January 2012 to December 2016. Method: Data were extracted from the ICU records of the patient and analyzed.Results: During this study period, the frequency of admission into ICU was significantly more (p<0.001) from medical discipline (55.20%) than surgical disciplines (44.80%). The incidence of survival was significantly lower (p<0.001) from medical discipline (37.68%), than from surgical disciplines (49.05%). Occurrence of total ventilatory support provided in all disciplines was 60.32% and it was significantly higher for the surgical patients. Overall mortality rate was 57.23%.Conclusion: During prioritizing the patients for ICU admission surgical cases should get preference. It is primarily necessary to optimize patient to doctor ratio and patient to nurse ratio and providing the service by critical care physicians (“intensivists”) to reduce the mortality rate of ICU.Bangladesh J Medicine Jul 2018; 29(2) : 59-62

Introduction Social validation or the inclusion of stakeholders in the research process is beneficial, as it may decrease bias, increases efficacy, and prevents harm. For direct stakeholders such as individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), social validation has mostly included participants who do not experience significant speech, language, and communication limitations while frequently omitting individuals with ASD who have complex communication needs (CCN). The presence of CCN indicates that augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) strategies are needed for individuals to express themselves. Social validation should not be limited to being participants in an intervention but should include involvement in the research process. This requires an understanding of the current trends, levels, and mechanisms of involvement in AAC research. Purpose This review aimed to identify and describe the inclusion of direct stakeholders with ASD in the social validation of AAC research. Method A scoping review was conducted following the PRISMA-ScR (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for scoping reviews) methodology to identify AAC research that included stakeholders with ASD (direct and indirect) for social validation and to evaluate their level of involvement using the Typology of Youth Participation and Empowerment pyramid framework. Results Twenty-four studies were identified. Studies primarily included indirect stakeholders (e.g., caregivers) giving in-depth perspectives, while direct stakeholders were limited to being intervention participants. Conclusions Voices of direct stakeholders with ASD and CCN remain limited or excluded in research. Reasons for the exclusion of individuals with ASD and CCN from research and strategies for future inclusion are raised and discussed.
