The method developed over the past decade in northern Japan to culture phyllosoma larvae of five species of principally cool-temperate spiny lobsters combines the features of upwelling water, co- cultured microalgae, and use of mussel gonad as food. The feeding behaviour of the phyllosomas shows that they are primarily predators with the pereiopods and secondarily plankton feeders with the maxillipeds and maxillae. Recent work has shown that contamination of culture water by microorganisms such as the fouling protozoans Vorticellaspp. can greatly reduce phyllosoma survival. The significance of co-cultures of microalgae in maintaining water quality is not yet fully understood. Newly hatched lavae of sailfin sandfish (Arctoscopus japonicus) is an excellent food for late-stage phyllosomas of Jasus verreauxi. About 5% of J. verreauxi phyllosomas metamorphosed into pueruli. Mortality during the puerulus stage was reduced by increasing the capacity of the culture tanks from 30 L to 100 L. A single Palinurus elephas phyllosoma raised in co-culture with diatoms and fed mussel gonad and A. japonicus larvae metamorphosed into a puerulus in 65 days after seven moults.

Tyrosinases, which are widely distributed among animals, plants and fungi, are involved in many biologically essential functions, including pigmentation, sclerotization, primary immune response and host defence. In the present study, we present a structural and physicochemical characterization of two new tyrosinases from the crustaceans Palinurus elephas (European spiny lobster) and Astacus leptodactylus (freshwater crayfish). In vivo, the purified crustacean tyrosinases occur as hexamers composed of one subunit type with a molecular mass of approx. 71kDa. The tyrosinase hexamers appear to be similar to the haemocyanins, based on electron microscopy. Thus a careful purification protocol was developed to discriminate clearly between tyrosinases and the closely related haemocyanins. The physicochemical properties of haemocyanins and tyrosinases are different with respect to electronegativity and hydrophobicity. The hexameric nature of arthropod tyrosinases suggests that these proteins were the ideal predecessors from which to develop the oxygen-carrier protein haemocyanin, with its allosteric and co-operative properties, later on.

Use of Chitinolytic Bacteria as Biological Control of Colletotrichum capsici on Chili PlantsColletotrichum capsici is known as the causal agent of anthracnose disease in chili plant and may cause reduction of crop yield. Chitinolytic bacteria, namely Serratia marcescens KAHN 15.12, Bacillus thuringiensis SAHA 12.12, and BAE 36 were reported to have antagonistic activity against C. capsici. Therefore, a study was conducted to determine the potential of chitinolytic bacteria on controlling C. capsici on chili plants in greenhouse experiment. Three bacterial isolates used as biocontrol agent was formulated by using talcum as carrier materials. The methodologies consisted of characterization of bacterial isolates, formulation of biocontrol agent, viability test of bacterial isolate, efficacy of biocontrol agents in the laboratory and in the greenhouse.  Disease severity in the laboratory reached 64% when chili treated with isolate formulation of BAE 36.  In the greenhouse, BAE 36 isolate formulation and consortium formulation were able to suppress infection of C. capsici; each was indicated by disease incidence of 25% and 50%, respectively. These results indicated that chitinolytic bacterial formulations could be potencial as biocontrol agents of C. capsici.
