The positive column of a gas discharge is investigated in the subcritical regime when no self-excited nonlinear ionization wave exists. We derive a model equation for the so-called wave of stratification, which is an externally excited envelope wave. The main point of this work is that, in contrast to previous papers, we take into account the radial structure of the homogeneous column. The mathematical description of the wave of stratification in the form of a complex Ginzburg–Landau equation follows by a systematic reductive perturbation method. The coefficients in the Ginzburg–Landau equation are first calculated in general and are then evaluated explicitly for a low-pressure argon discharge. The results are compared with those obtained from a frequently used simpler model that neglects any radial structure. Finally, the dynamics of the nonlinear wave of stratification is demonstrated via numerical simulations.

This paper presents a global analysis of the first 2MASS (Two Micron All Sky Survey) data as observed in seven fields at different Galactic latitudes. These new data lead to strong constraints on the radial structure of the Galactic thin and thick disks. The interpretation of star counts and color distributions of stars in the near-infrared with a synthetic stellar population model provides strong evidence that the Galactic thin disk density scale length, hR, is rather short (2.8±0.3 kpc). The Galactic thick disk population is revisited in the light of new data. We find the thick disk to have a local density of 3.5 ± 2.0% of the thin disk, exponential scale height, hz, of 860±200 pc and exponential scale length, hR, of

This paper reports the results from Gallup’s global analysis of the likelihood of first-generation migrants, second-generation migrants and the native-born to send financial help in the form of money or goods to others inside or outside their respective country of residence. The findings in this paper are based on more than 450,000 interviews conducted through Gallup’s World Poll in 157 countries in 2012, 2013 and 2014. The sample includes more than 26,000 first-generation migrants and more than 20,000 second-generation migrants. The large sample enables Gallup to analyze first-generation migrants by the duration of their stay in their adopted country and compare their remittance behaviors with second-generation migrants and the native-born.
