A non-linear iterative least-square fitting method is presented for calculating the parameters of a modified gamma function. The method permits the correction of the appearance time (AT) and the curve parameters in those situations in which AT cannot be estimated with accuracy. The reliability and accuracy of the method is studied in experimental and simulated curves by means of a computer, comparing the results with those obtained by the method of Starmer and Clark for different initial selections of AT and noise at the base line. The usefulness of the method is shown in situations where the curves are distorted in their initial part.

In view of the poor anti-noise performance of traditional methods, the principle of camera calibration is analyzed based on calibration template with planar circles, and a new calibration technique is proposed based on pin-hole perspective model. Firstly, the edges of image ellipses are located in sub-pixel by spatial-moment operator. Then elliptic equations are obtained by the Least Square Fitting method, and common tangents of two arbitrary ellipses are also calculated. Finally, the extrinsic and intrinsic parameters are computed by the Radial Alignment Constraint (RAC) model. Experiments results indicate that proposed method has a goof performance of lower computation complexity and higher precision.

This study analyzes the flatness of the commercial rackets measured by the modified S500 rubber thickness gauge mounted on a moving stage. A least square fitting method was used to calculate the racket flatness of these rackets. The experimental results showed the average flatness of all samples is 0.03 mm and the triple standard deviation is ±0.03 mm. The flatness of the rackets will lead to an in accurate examination of the rubber thickness before a match.

This paper presents an experimental study in high speed milling of SiCp/Al composites. Machining tests were carried out on a high speed milling machine by using chemical vapour deposition (CVD) diamond coated tools. The surface micro-topography was tested by the OLS3000 Confocal Laser Scanning Microscope. The Gaussian filtering method and the least square fitting method were used to treat the measured results. Two methods are compared according to the effect on keeping important original surface’s character. The results showed that the least square fitting method is suitable due to its good accordance to the original surface’s character.
