As a result of the construction of a barrage in the estuary of the Nakdong river the size of the estuary will be considerably reduced. In addition, a large river reservoir is created upstream of the barrage. Main points of interest are the effects of the discharge of raw sewage and treated effluent into the Nakdong river on the water quality in the projected reservoir and the water quality forecasts for the remaining part of the estuary, in relation with the existing plans for sewerage and sewage treatment for the city of Busan. In addition, measures to reduce the effects of the barrage and the outline of a water quality management programme are presented. Special consideration is given to the methodological aspects of the water quality study, i.e. the selection and use of mathematical models in a situation where input data are rather uncertain and only very few data for parameter estimation and model verification are available.

The 1D model package STRIVE is verified for simulating the interaction between ecological processes and surface water flow. The model is general and can be adapted and further developed according to the research question. The hydraulic module, based on the Saint-Venant equations, is the core part. The presence of macrophytes influences the water quality and the discharge due to the flow resistance of the river, expressed by Manning's coefficient, and allows an ecological description of the river processes. Based on the advection–dispersion equation, water quality parameters are incorporated and modelled. Calculation of the water quantity parameters, coupled with water quality and inherent validation and sensitivity analysis, is the main goal of this research. An important study area is the River Aa near Poederlee (Belgium), a lowland river with a wealth of vegetation growth, where discharge and vegetation measurements are carried out on a regular basis. The developed STRIVE model shows good and accurate calculation results. The work highlights the possibility of STRIVE to model flow processes, water quality aspects and ecological interaction combined and separately. Coupling of discharges, water levels, amount of biomass and tracer values provides a powerful prediction modelling tool for the ecological behaviour of lowland rivers.

Pit lakes can represent significant liabilities at mine closure. However, depending upon certain characteristics of which water quality is key, pit lakes often also present opportunities to provide significant regional benefit and address residual closure risks of both their own and overall project closure and even offset the environmental costs of mining by creating new end uses. These opportunities are widely dependent on water quality, slope stability, and safety issues. Unfortunately, many pit lakes have continued to be abandoned without repurposing for an end use. We reviewed published pit lake repurposing case studies of abandoned mine pit lakes. Beneficial end use type and outcome varied depending upon climate and commodity, but equally important were social and political dynamics that manifest as mining company commitments or regulatory requirements. Many end uses have been realized: passive and active recreation, nature conservation, fishery and aquaculture, drinking and industrial water storage, greenhouse carbon fixation, flood protection and waterway remediation, disposal of mine and other waste, mine water treatment and containment, and education and research. Common attributes and reasons that led to successful repurposing of abandoned pit lakes as beneficial end uses are discussed. Recommendations are given for all stages of mine closure planning to prevent pit lake abandonment and to achieve successful pit lake closure with beneficial end uses.

Abstract Major ion and trace element concentrations in shallow groundwater of Linhuan coal-mining district, Northern Anhui Province, China, were analyzed to determine its hydrogeochemical characteristics and to assess drinking and irrigation water quality. The relative abundance of cations and anions was Na+ > Mg2+ > Ca2+ > K+, and HCO3− > SO42− > Cl− > NO3−, respectively. The concentrations of Na+, HCO3−, NO3−, and total dissolved solids (TDS), and the electric conductivity (EC) values in some samples were higher than the permissible limits of the Water Health Organization (WHO). Gibbs diagrams showed that rock weathering mainly controlled the major ion chemistry of the groundwater, and the first aquifer of this study area had a weak hydraulic connection with atmospheric precipitation. The calculated sodium percentage (%Na) and sodium adsorption ratio (SAR) revealed that the slight sodium and high salinity hazards needed to be controlled before irrigation. According to the fuzzy comprehensive assessment, the groundwater samples were classified into four categories. The results showed that 92.86% of the groundwater samples were suitable for drinking use. For human health, the NO3− and Mn levels in the groundwater should be reduced before drinking, and treatment of the high salinity hazards is required before irrigation.
