Crystal structure of hexylammonium anthracene-9-carboxylate was investigated. The salt was arranged by a one-dimensional hydrogen bond network to form a columnar structure in the crystalline state. This columnar structure should be the model of fibrous assemblies in the organogels of anthracene-9-carboxylate alkylammonium salts having a long alkyl chain.

Microstructure dependence of effective thermal conductivity of the coating was investigated to optimize the thermal insulation of columnar structure electron beam physical vapor deposition (EB-PVD coating), considering constraints by mechanical stress. First, a three-dimensional finite element model of multiple columnar structure was established to involve thermal contact resistance across the interfaces between the adjacent columnar structures. Then, the mathematical formula of each structural parameter was derived to demonstrate the numerical outcome and predict the effective thermal conductivity. After that, the heat conduction characteristics of the columnar structured coating was analyzed to reveal the dependence of the effective thermal conductivity of the thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) on its microstructure characteristics, including the column diameter, the thickness of coating, the ratio of the height of fine column to coarse column and the inclination angle of columns. Finally, the influence of each microstructural parameter on the mechanical stress of the TBCs was studied by a mathematic model, and the optimization of the inclination angle was proposed, considering the thermal insulation and mechanical stress of the coating.

A systematic investigation has been made on surface defect states of crystallites in the crystallization process of sputtered amorphous silicon films by isothermal annealing. Transmission electron microscopic observations indicate a pronounced vertical columnar structure in the upper part of the films, where the crystallization is delayed. Admittance spectroscopy reveals that two newly generated energy levels with the crystallization are attributed to the crystallites in the lower and upper parts of the films in view of the anisotropic crystallization. These thermally induced changes can be well explained by Si–Si shearing modes at the interfaces of crystallites through the process of crystallization.

Abstract[Ni(C2H5N4O2)2] · HCl · H2O, C4H10N8NiO4 · HCl · H2O, forms triclinic crystals, Mr = 347.36, P1̄, a = 7.219(2), b = 7.316(1), c = 11.797(3) Å, α = 73.89(2), β = 86.37(2), γ = 85.71(2)°, V = 596 Å3 , Z = 2, dc = 1.93 Mgm-3 ; final Rw = 0.028 for 1957 reflections. The planar complex molecules form equidistant stacks along b, with the molecular planes inclined at ~29° to the stacking axis. Molecules of adjacent stacks are linked along a by an intermolecular H bridge coexistins with the usual intramolecular H bridges. The analogous Pt complex, C4H10N8O4Pt · HCl · H2O, Mr = 483.74, a = 6.480(4), b = 16.115(5), c = 12.194(9) Å, β = 101.27(4)°, V = 1249 Å3 , Z = 4, dc = 2.57 Mgm-3 , P21/a, crystallizes in a columnar structure with a Pt-Pt separation of ~a/2 ≈ 3.24 Å. Due to twinning, faking orthorhombic symmetry, a complete structure determination was not possible.
