e24033 Background: General health related factors such as obesity, unhealthy diets disproportionate with sugary and highly processed foods, inactivity, and smoking have repeatedly been shown to negatively impact survival and quality of life outcomes in cancer survivors. The Healthy Eating Active Lifestyle (HEAL) – GYN “rehabilitation” cancer program was developed to provide intensive group lifestyle training on exercise, nutrition, sleep, social integration, and stress management via a telemedicine platform. The aim of this study was to determine the feasibility of such an intervention and its tolerability, in addition to its impact on short-term quality of life for gynecologic cancer patients. Methods: HEAL – GYN consists of 8 weekly group sessions offering experiential instruction and personalized goal setting for patients with diagnosis of gynecologic cancer. Components are drawn from the tenets of lifestyle medicine. An oncologist certified in lifestyle medicine along with a multidisciplinary rehabilitation team addressed diet, physical activity, strategies for sleep and stress management, smoking cessation, and alcohol intake. The intervention included training to address unmet psychologic, emotional, physical, sexual, social, and spiritual needs common to cancer survivors. American College of Lifestyle Medicine questionnaires were administered, utilizing Likert scales (1-5) in a pre- and post- fashion to assess improvements in physical activity levels, dietary habits, sleep hygiene, and quality of life. Medical records were reviewed including anthropometric data. Results: 26 patients have enrolled thus far, and we report outcomes on the first 20 participants. The mean age was 58.8 years; 22 were Caucasian, and 7 were on maintenance therapies for gynecologic cancers. Average total severity of reported symptoms (scale = 100 points) on a general medical symptom questionnaire (MSQ) decreased by 22% (61 vs 48). Eight patients reported increased perceived levels of health and 6 had stable perception of health. There were also notable improvements from baseline in item assessments of eating behavior (34%), perceived stress (20%), and resilience (21%). Patients also reported a notable trend towards improvement in anxiety (35%) and depression (34%), as well as social integration and connectedness (30%). 100% of participants would “highly recommend the program” and none complained of stress or altered mood associated with online instruction. Conclusions: The telemedicine HEAL – GYN peri-habilitation program is feasible and well tolerated. In addition, the program may improve quality of life and may prevent further decline for those on treatment or maintenance therapy. These preliminary findings support continued investigation of a telemedicine healthy lifestyle peri-habilitative program.

This session introduces important information on understanding just what stress is and how it can affect our bodies. Learning to identify situations that can be stressful is the first step, followed by understanding how different stressors call for different stress management strategies. One particularly important issue in managing the stress that comes from having a chronic illness is sleep. The Children’s Health and Illness Recovery Program (CHIRP) introduces the importance of improving sleep by learning healthy sleep hygiene practices and monitoring this with the help of the Sleep Log. Improvement in sleep hygiene and physical activity are emphasized as important building blocks of CHIRP.

Session 1 of the Children’s Health and Illness Recovery Program (CHIRP) addresses the impact of illness- and non–illness-related stressors on teens with chronic illness and coping strategies needed to reduce stress. This chapter provides the clinician with techniques for guiding the teen in developing methods for identifying stressors and assessing the impact they may have on their symptoms and functioning. The importance of sleep and developing healthy sleep hygiene practices are introduced, along with instructions for the teen in completing a Sleep Log to assess their own sleep patterns and practices. Graduated physical activity is also assessed and encouraged. These data will be collected over the course of several sessions in order to facilitate more effective coping, stress management, and sleep hygiene practices.

AbstractHigh prevalence of noncommunicable diseases with their associated costs are related more and more to unhealthy behaviours such as unappropriated diets, lack of physical activity and smoking. Lifestyle medicine is now more and more scientific and with evidence-based fundament. The key in lifestyle change is negotiation and cooperation. Physicians should do more than education, should empower and motivate the patient in planning a healthy lifestyle leading to sustained change.

A majority of Americans have health care insurance through their employers, the cost for which is rising at an alarming rate. Unfortunately, higher expenditure on insurance has not translated into healthier employees. In this article, we present a value-based design plan for self-funded employers, administered by lifestyle medicine board-certified providers, which is purported to save money for employers and yet may demonstrate better health outcomes for employees by engaging them in evidence-based lifestyle interventions such as plant-based nutrition, regular physical activity and minimizing sedentary behaviors, sleeping well, tobacco cessation, and so on.

Recommendations for prescribing stretching exercises are regularly updated. It appears that coaches progressively follow the published guidelines, but the real stretching practices of athletes are unknown. The present study aimed to investigate stretching practices in individuals from various sports or physical activity programs. A survey was completed online to determine some general aspects of stretching practices. The survey consisted of 32 multiple-choice or open-ended questions to illustrate the general practices of stretching, experiences and reasons for stretching. In total, 3546 questionnaires were analyzed (47.3% women and 52.7% men). Respondents practiced at the national/international level (25.2%), regional level (29.8%), or recreationally (44.9%). Most respondents (89.3%) used stretching for recovery (74.9%) or gains of flexibility (57.2%). Stretching was generally performed after training (72.4%). The respondents also indicated they performed stretching as a pre-exercise routine (for warm-up: 49.9%). Static stretching was primarily used (88.2%) but when applied for warm-up reasons, respondents mostly indicated performing dynamic stretching (86.2%). Only 37.1% of the respondents indicated being supervised. Finally, some gender and practice level differences were noticed. The present survey revealed that the stretching practices were only partly in agreement with recent evidence-based recommendations. The present survey also pointed out the need to improve the supervision of stretching exercises.

The theoretical foundation of tourism policy is based on an interdisciplinary approach, using evidence-based findings from related scientific fields. For this reason, trends in the health and physical activity of the population should be considered as part of the promotion of healthy lifestyles in the field of tourism. The aim of this study is to support the multidisciplinary development of evidence-based tourism by using the results of long-term monitoring of physical activity (PA) preferences among youth. Furthermore, this study aims to support the continuation of education regarding tourism, behavioral changes in lifestyle, health promotion (including physical activity promotion), physical conditioning, as well as related mental conditioning. An interdisciplinary approach should lead to the adoption of knowledge, habits, and interests that lead to a lifelong readiness to participate in active tourism. The research sample of this 10-year survey consisted of 17,032 Czech and Polish respondents, aged from 12 to 25 years. A questionnaire on physical activity preferences was employed to explore the current status and trends in physical activity preferences and realization. The results show the actual status and trends in preferred and realized types of physical activity and represent an important indicator of tourism service choices for these youths, as well as predict future interests for tourism clients in schools. The analysis of the results enabled the suggestion of a prognostic model of tourism strategy focused on the integration of physical activity with tourism activities.
