Lake nutrient variability inferred from elemental (C, N, S) and isotopic (δ13C, δ15N) analyses of aquatic plant macrofossils

Macrofossils of terrestrial plants have been picked from a sediment core taken in Lake Lobsigen, a small lake on the Western Swiss Plateau. The sediments were previously analyzed for pollen composition, plant and animal macrofossils, and stable isotopes. Plant macrofossils were selected near pollen zone boundaries in Late Glacial and early Postglacial sediment for 14C dating by AMS. In the same lake carbonate and gyttja (aquatic plant) samples were dated by decay counting. The dates on terrestrial material are generally younger than those on carbonate and gyttja, ie, material reflecting the 14C/C ratio of dissolved bicarbonate in lake water. This is probably due to a contribution of dissolved limestone carbonate and thus a somewhat reduced 14C/C ratio in the lake's water (hard water effect).

AbstractThe “type” DeKalb mounds of northeastern Illinois, USA (42.0°N, −88.7°W), are formed of basal sand and gravel overlain by rhythmically bedded fines, and weathered sand and gravel. Generally from 2 to 7 m thick, the fines include abundant fossils of ostracodes and uncommon leaves and stems of tundra plants. Rare chironomid head capsules, pillclam shells, and aquatic plant macrofossils also have been observed.Radiocarbon ages on the tundra plant fossils from the “type” region range from 20,420 to 18,560 cal yr BP. Comparison of radiocarbon ages of terrestrial plants from type area ice-walled lake plains and adjacent kettle basins indicate that the topographic inversion to ice-free conditions occurred from 18,560 and 16,650 cal yr BP. Outside the “type” area, the oldest reliable age of tundra plant fossils in DeKalb mound sediment is 21,680 cal yr BP; the mound occurs on the northern arm of the Ransom Moraine (−88.5436°W, 41.5028°N). The youngest age, 16,250 cal yr BP, is associated with a mound on the Deerfield Moraine (−87.9102°W, 42.4260°N) located about 9 km east of Lake Michigan. The chronology of individual successions indicates the lakes persisted on the periglacial landscape for about 300 to 1500 yr.

Bucephalandra sp. is a genus of aquatic plants endemic to Borneo Island, representing the Araceae family. Bucephalandra sp. is famous for its ornamental aquatic plants which are usually used in aquascaping. These aquatic plants come at fantastic prices, e.g. ±300 euros in European ornamental aquatic markets and Rp 50,000 – 700,000 in Indonesian aquatic plant markets. We collected 195 types of Bucephalandra from an ornamental aquatic plant market in Jakarta. In the market, they are sold under its commercial name. Therefore, the aim of this study is to collect and identify the species of all Bucephalandra types in the aquatic plant commercial market. These species that we identified are based on botanical taxonomist identification in the Herbarium Bogoriense Department Botany – Research Centre for Biology – Indonesian Institute of Science (LIPI) Cibinong. The result of this study is from our collection (195 types) of which 102 types are Bucephalandra Motleyana Schott species and 90 types are the other species of Bucephalandra.

Tule Springs Fossil Beds National Monument (TUSK) preserves 22,650 acres of the upper Las Vegas Wash in the northern Las Vegas Valley (Nevada, USA). TUSK is home to extensive and stratigraphically complex groundwater discharge (GWD) deposits, called the Las Vegas Formation, which represent springs and desert wetlands that covered much of the valley during the late Quaternary. The GWD deposits record hydrologic changes that occurred here in a dynamic and temporally congruent response to abrupt climatic oscillations over the last ~300 ka (thousands of years). The deposits also entomb the Tule Springs Local Fauna (TSLF), one of the most significant late Pleistocene (Rancholabrean) vertebrate assemblages in the American Southwest. The TSLF is both prolific and diverse, and includes a large mammal assemblage dominated by Mammuthus columbi and Camelops hesternus. Two (and possibly three) distinct species of Equus, two species of Bison, Panthera atrox, Smilodon fatalis, Canis dirus, Megalonyx jeffersonii, and Nothrotheriops shastensis are also present, and newly recognized faunal components include micromammals, amphibians, snakes, and birds. Invertebrates, plant macrofossils, and pollen also occur in the deposits and provide important and complementary paleoenvironmental information. This field compendium highlights the faunal assemblage in the classic stratigraphic sequences of the Las Vegas Formation within TUSK, emphasizes the significant hydrologic changes that occurred in the area during the recent geologic past, and examines the subsequent and repeated effect of rapid climate change on the local desert wetland ecosystem.

The effluent from activated sludge treatment of petroleum wastewater was treated with the aid of a ponding system using aquatic plants (Water Hyacinth, Chlorella, Reed). A good result was obtained in this study. Pilot pond system shows that the purification efficiency depends on the residence time of about 14 days. The petroleum removal waa 97-98 %, the COD removal was from 88-93 %. The dissolved oxygen amount (with Chlorella) increased from 0.7 mg/l to 9.8 mg/l and the pH increased from 6.9 to 8-8.6. The application of 3 step biological pond with the use of Water Hyacinth, Chlorella, Reeds for post treatment of petroleum wastewater is appropriate in Vietnam.
