Background: This systematic review evaluates the oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) of patients with chronic respiratory diseases. Methods: A systematic literature search was performed based on the PubMed, Medline, Web of Science, and Scopus, using the search terms: “oral health-related quality of life” and “respiratory disease” or “lung” and “oral health-related quality of life.” Full-text articles published until June 30, 2021 and reporting any OHRQoL measurement in children or adults with a chronic respiratory disease or condition were included and analyzed qualitatively. Results: A total of seven out of 44 studies were included, of which four studies examined adults and three studies investigated children. The respective diseases were chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) (n = 2), sleep apnea (n = 2), severe asthma (n = 1), cystic fibrosis (n = 1), and lung transplantation (n = 1). Four studies confirmed a worse OHRQoL in the respiratory diseased group compared to healthy controls. The overall OHRQoL was reduced in the included studies. Oral health, health-related quality of life, and disease-related parameters were rarely examined with regard to OHRQoL.Conclusion: Patients with chronic respiratory diseases show a reduced OHRQoL. Oral health should be fostered in these individuals to support their OHRQoL.

This article is devoted to the features of the formation of chronic bronchopulmonary pathology and the effectiveness of treatment of patients are significantly influenced by such unfavorable factors as the state of the environment, working conditions, living conditions, late access to medical care, the presence of concomitant diseases, etc. The dependence between the features of the formation of chronic respiratory diseases, risk factors and the quality of life of urban residents was revealed. The functioning scales presented in the program allowed us to identify the features of the social and hygienic functioning of patients. The most important thing in the treatment of patients with respiratory diseases is to increase the level of medical awareness and medical activity. The obtained data can be used to develop recommendations for the detection of early chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases

Pulmonary rehabilitation results in substantial and clinically meaningful improvements in dyspnea, exercise capacity and quality of life for patients with chronic respiratory diseases such as COPD.  There is also evidence indicating that pulmonary re- habilitation reduces subsequent health care utilization and – perhaps – mortality, if the intervention is given in the post-exacerbation period.

Background. Holistic scope in treating persons with chronic respiratory diseases is one of the main features of pulmonary rehabilitation program (PRP) at Zagreb University. Interventions are provided by a team made of physicians and other health care professionals - physiotherapists, respiratory therapists, nurses, psychologists, occupational therapists, social workers, behavioral specialists, among others. The program itself is tailored to attend to each person's specific needs through careful interdisciplinary examination and treatment planning, establishing commom ground to address disease severity, respiratory symptoms, comorbidities, psychological manifestations and specific limitations a person has in everyday activities. The focus of PRP is the whole person rather than just a person's disease.Aim. To show the impact of PRP's person-centered approach on patient's quality of life (QoL), anxiety, depression and stress levels.Method. Questionnaires designed to measure quality of life (single question scale), anxiety, depression and stress (DASS21) were administred to 54 patients at the beginning and at the end of a three-week pulmonary rehabilitation program. Each patient underwent an individualized program of education, respiratory exercises, nutrition consultation, and psychosocial/behavioral support and intervention.Results. Results showed significant improvement in all measured parameters – higher overall QoL (p<0.01), and lowered anxiety (p< 0.01), depression (p<0.01) and stress levels (p< 0.01).Conclusions. Pulmonary rehabilitation with a person-centered approach as one of its main features appears to improve quality of life and reduce levels of anxiety, depression and stress in persons with chronic respiratory diseases.
