AbstractIn the last decades, mechanochemical processing has emerged as a sustainable method for the large-scale production of a variety of nanomaterials. In particular, mechanochemical synthesis can afford well-dispersed metal-oxide nanoparticles, which are used in wide-ranging applications including energy storage and conversion, environmental monitoring, or biomedical uses. This article reviews recent progress in the mechanochemical synthesis of metal-oxide nanoparticles, explores reaction mechanisms, and contrasts the influence of chosen process parameters on the properties of end products. The role of choice of reaction pathway, as well as advantages and limitations compared to other synthesis methods are discussed. A prospect for future development of this synthetic method is proposed.

Metal-oxide nanosheet aggregates were prepared by exfoliation and subsequent aggregation of layered metal oxides and used for the conversion of glucose to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) in water. Three aggregated nanosheets, HNbWO6, HNb3O8, and HTiNbO5, yielded HMF in water at 393–413 K, whereas ion-exchange resins and H-form zeolites did not. The catalytic activity of the nanosheets decreased in the order HNbWO6 > HNb3O8 > HTiNbO5, which correlates with their acidity. The HNbWO6 nanosheets exhibited higher selectivity for HMF than niobic acid, and the selectivity was improved in the water–toluene biphasic system. The selectivity for HMF over HNbWO6 nanosheets was higher from glucose than from fructose. Kinetic analysis suggested that in addition to fructose, an intermediate species was involved in the reaction pathway of HMF production from glucose.

The manner in which ZrO2 forms on zirconium at 300°C in air has been discussed in the first reference. In short, monoclinic zirconia nucleates and grows with a preferred orientation relative to the metal substrate. The mode of growth is not well understood since an epitaxial relationship which gives minimum misfit between the zirconium ions in the metal/oxide combination is not realized. The reason may be associated with a thin cubic or tetragonal layer of ZrO2 between the inner oxygen saturated metal and the outer monoclinic zirconia.
