Purpose The correlation between work and life satisfaction varies substantially across studies, suggesting that the strength of the relationship may depend on the studied population and its circumstances. The purpose of this paper is to assess the strength of the relationship in the context of Chile and the moderator effect of self-employment (SE), whether a worker is self-employed or on a salary. Design/methodology/approach Based on the idea that work plays a more central role in the life of a self-employed person than in that of a salaried worker, the authors hypothesized that the strength of the relationship between work and life satisfaction will be stronger for the former. The measures used in this study were part of a large questionnaire administered to investigate several characteristics of the Chilean population. The authors used multiple regression analysis to test the moderator effect of SE on the strength of the relationship between work satisfaction and life satisfaction. Findings The results from a national sample of 658 Chilean workers indicate that the relationship between work satisfaction and life satisfaction is positive. Furthermore, the relationship is stronger for self-employed workers than for salaried workers. The authors also found a small negative direct effect of SE on life satisfaction, which suggests that the self-employed might be, on average, less satisfied with their lives than their salaried counterparts. Originality/value The sample used in the current study was not only substantially larger in size but also more representative of the current workforce because it included both genders. Consequently, the results are more robust and generalizable.

Self-perceived health is an important indicator of occupational health. This research explored the relationship between poor self-perceived health and exposure to psychosocial risk factors, taking into account potential socio-demographic, occupational, and employment determinants. Using data from the First Survey of Occupational Safety and Health Conditions, covering 1049 salaried workers in Guayaquil, Ecuador, descriptive and stratified binary logistic regression analyses (odds ratios with corresponding 95% confidence intervals) were carried out. A significant relationship was found between exposure to psychosocial risk factors and the probability of presenting poor self-perceived health by socio-demographic, occupational, and employment characteristics. Occupational exposure factors to psychosocial risks were predictors of self-perceived ill health and were related to the variables analyzed; the most frequently expressed factors among the respondents were cognitive demands (DCOG) and job insecurity (IL). The results have implications in terms of designing effective workplace interventions pursuant to ensuring the health and well-being of employees.

Abstract Study objectives This study investigated the association between ambient nighttime temperature and sleep problems assessed by the prescription dose of sleeping pills in South Korean adults. Methods We used the 2002-2015 National Health Insurance Service-National Sample Cohort. A total of 711,079 adults who were 20 years old or older were included, wherein 42,858 adults (approximately 6%) had been prescribed hypnotic medications including zolpidem (N05CF02) and triazolam (N05CD05). Ambient temperature data was calculated as the mean highest temperature of nighttime (23:00-07:00) for every month from January to December. We combined the drug-prescribed date with the administrative districts-level daily nighttime temperature between 2002 and 2015. Results We found that a non-linear, U-shaped relationship between nighttime temperature and hypnotic medication prescription. With an increase per 1°C temperature or an increase in a square per 1°C, the prescription dose of sleeping pills was significantly increased (both p <0.05). At each 5°C nighttime temperature, subjects belonging to low (≤0°C and 0 – 5°C) or high (20 – 25°C and ≥25°C) temperature categories had significantly higher doses of sleeping pills than those at the reference temperature (10 – 15°C). Changes in nighttime temperature had a significant non-linear effect on the prescribed dosage of hypnotic medications for both adults (p <.0001) and the elderly (p = 0.0006). Conclusion We found that either a high or low nighttime temperature was significantly associated with a high daily dose of hypnotic medications in the Korean population.

AbstractObjectives:This study utilizes a [US] national sample of emergency medical services (EMS) professionals to explore the hypothesis that demographic and work-related characteristics are associated with involvement in ambulance crashes.Methods:In 2004, a cohort of nationally registered EMS professionals was surveyed to determine ambulance crash involvement during a 12-month period. Involvement in an ambulance crash was the outcome variable of interest. Demographics such as age, community size, service type, call volume, time spent in an ambulance, and current sleep problems were analyzed as independent variables. A multivariate logistic regression model identified variables associated with involvement in an ambulance crash within the past year.Results:Surveys were received from 1,775/5,565 (32.0%) participants; 1,297 (73.1%) met the inclusion criteria. A total of 111 (8.6%) of participants reported being involved in an ambulance crash within the past 12 months. When controlling for call volume and time in an ambulance, the odds of involvement in an ambulance crash within the past year were significantly higher for younger EMS professionals and those reporting sleep problems.Conclusions:Results from this analysis suggest age and sleep problems are associated with involvement in an ambulance crash. Future studies should investigate interventions to minimize the effects of these associations.
