Background: Mammary gland tissue (left half) revealed the presence of excess proliferation of fibrous tissue with disorganization of alveolar structures and the right half showed extensive fibrous tissue proliferation of mammary gland following intramammary inoculation of 2000 c.f.u. of Staphylococcus aureus. However, oral dosing of Bauhinia variegata L. bark powder at 6 gm/kg for 7 days and 3 gm/kg for another 7 days exhibited reduction of fibrous tissue in chronic mastitis. Objective: The fibrolytic effect of one week oral dosing of Bauhinia purpurea L. bark powder was studied in chronic mastitis with induced fibrosis as Bauhinia variegate L. is rarely available in plain land. Methods: Chronic mastitis with fibrosis was induced by intramammary inoculation of coagulase positive Staphylococcus aureus in group III and IV goats. Group I and III goats were injected with a single dose of ceftriaxone at 20 mg/kg intravenously, whereas group II and IV goats were orally administered Bauhinia purpurea L. bark powder at 6 g/kg for 7 days with a single dose of ceftriaxone at 20 mg/kg intravenously. Results: The t1/2β of ceftriaxone with Bauhinia purpurea L. stem bark powder in chronic mastitis increased significantly. Ceftizoxime was detected in plasma from 1 h to 48 h post dosing (pd) in group III and from 1 h to 96 h pd in group IV, respectively. Conclusion: Bark powder of Bauhinia purpurea L. at 6g/kg orally once daily increased the bioavailability of ceftriaxone and or ceftizoxime in milk due to its fibrolytic effect which was not reported earlier. Therefore, the Bauhinia purpurea L. bark powder having fibrolytic effect has the potential to reduce development of cancer.

Inflammation is all a pervasive phenomenon, which is elicited by the body in response to obnoxious stimuli as a protective measure. However, sustained inflammation leads to several diseases including cancer. Therefore it is necessary to neutralize inflammation. Sonapatha (Oroxylum indicum), a medicinal plant, is traditionally used as a medicine in Ayurveda and other folk systems of medicine. It is commonly used to treat inflammatory diseases including rheumatoid arthritis and asthma. Despite this fact its anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects are not evaluated scientifically. Therefore, the anti-inflammatory and analgesic activities of Sonapatha (Oroxylum indicum) were studied in Swiss albino mice by different methods. The hot plate, acetic acid, and tail immersion tests were used to evaluate the analgesic activity whereas xylene-induced ear edema and formalin induced paw edema tests were used to study the anti-inflammatory activity of Sonapatha. The administration of mice with 250 and 300 mg/kg b.wt. ofO. indicumreduced pain and inflammation indicating that Sonapatha possesses analgesic and anti-inflammatory activities. The maximum analgesic and anti-inflammatory activities were observed in mice receiving 300 mg/kg b.wt. ofO. indicumethanol extract. Our study indicates thatO. indicumpossesses both anti-inflammatory and analgesic activities and it may be useful as an anti-inflammatory agent in the inflammation related disorders.

Column chromatography of the light petroleum fraction from the methanolic extract of the stem bark of Salix tetrasperma Roxb. (Salicaceae) resulted in the isolation of β-sitosterol acetate, friedelin, 3β-friedelinol, β-amyrin, β-sitosterol, β-sitosterol-O-glucoside in addition to palmitic acid. From the dichloromethane fraction of the leaves, catechol and tremulacin were isolated. Salicin and its derivatives tremuloidin and 2’-O-p-(E)-coumaroyl salicin were isolated from the ethyl acetate fraction of the leaves. The isolated compounds were identified by MS, and 1D NMR (1H and 13C) and 2D NMR (H-H COSY, HSQC, and HMBC) spectral analyses. The total methanolic extract exhibited significant anti-inflammatory activity (rat hind paw oedema). The extract with a content of 120 mg/kg body weight produced 52% inhibition equivalent to the standard diclofenac sodium (54% inhibition). The antioxidant (DPPH free radical scavenging) and analgesic activities, respectively, were also evaluated.
