Influence of chemical irrigants on the tensile bond strength of an adhesive system used to cement glass fiber posts to root dentin

Aim: The objective is to evaluate the influence of different burs used to prepare the root canal space and acid ultrasonic agitation on bond strength (BS) between glass fiber posts (GFP) and root dentin. Methods: After endodontic treatment, the root canal spaces of 36 extracted human canines were prepared, according to the rotary instrument used (n=18): carbide bur (CB), provided by the post manufacturer and a diamond bur (DB). In both groups, the fiber posts were cemented with the adhesive system Ambar and resin cement Allcem, following the manufacturer`s instructions. Previously to the cementation procedures, the groups were subdivided into 2 groups (n=9), according to the phosphoric acid application mode: conventional etching (CE) and active etching (AE), performed by ultrasonic tip, both for 15s. Before the cementation procedures and after the acid application, 1 root of each group was randomly selected for ultrastructural morphological evaluation by SEM. After 1 week of the cementation, 8 specimens per group were transversely sectioned into six 1-mm thick slices, the root canal regions (cervical, medium and apical) were identified and the push-out test was performed to evaluate BS. Data were analyzed by 3-way ANOVA and Tukey test (α=0.05). Results: The results showed that the cross-product interaction of all factors was significant (P=0.035). Higher bond strength values were obtained when a DB with conventional etching, instead of CB, was used to prepare the root post space. Conclusion: It may be concluded that the use of diamond burs with conventional etching yields high BS values in all root canal thirds.

<p>The purpose of this study was to evaluate the bond strength between root dentin and glass fiber posts cemented with dual cure resinous cement associated with the conventional and self-etching adhesive systems. Twenty-four single-rooted human teeth were selected, and the crowns were removed at the cement enamel junction. The roots received biomechanical preparation and obturation followed by the intraradicular preparation compatible with a drill diameter of the glass fiber posts. The roots were divided into two groups, according to cementation protocol (n-12): Group 1 - etched with 37% phosphoric acid for 30 seconds, total-etch adhesive system Single Bond (3M ESPE)  and Enforce  resinous cement (Dentsply); Group 2 – self-etch adhesive system One Up Bond F (Tokuyama)  and Enforce  resinous cement (Dentsply). After the posts cementation, the roots were kept at 37<sup>0</sup> C for one week, and submitted to pull out test on the universal testing machine Emic to a traction speed of 1 mm/min. Data in MPa were submitted to the statistical <em>t</em>-test (5%). The <em>t</em>-test showed significant differences between the two groups (p=0.003). The average values in MPa (±standard-deviation) were: Group 1: 5.28(±3.25), Group 2: 10.05(±3.78). Enforce associated with the self-etch adhesive system One Up Bond F showed significantly higher bond strength values than Group 1 - Enforce associated with the total-etch adhesive system Single Bond.</p>

Objective: evaluate the effect of different luting protocols on the bond strength of glass fiber posts.Methods: Forty human canine teeth were randomly divided into four groups: Relyx U100/Endofill (R+E), Panavia F2.0/EndoFill (P+E), Relyx U100/Sealer 26 (R+S), Panavia F2.0/Sealer 26 (P+S). After the luting procedures, the samples were subjected to thermocycling (6.000 cycles; at 5±1 ºC and 55±1 ºC) and then sectioned in a precision cutting machine (Isomet 1000 Precision Saw) into 4 cuts of 2mm regarding to different deepness: Apical, Medium Apical, Medium Coronal, and Coronal. Next, the cuts were submitted to push-out test in a universal testing machine (EMIC) with load cell of 50N, at crosshead speed of 0.5mm/min.Results: They were obtained according to the different luting deepness (p≥0.05) (MPa): 1) apical – R+E (1.35±1.28), P+E (2.70±0.89), R+S (3.89±0.70), P+S (4.30±1.02); 2) medium apical – R+E (1.38±1.28), P+E (2.98±1.43), R+S (4.02±1.14), P+S (4.49±1.82); 3) medium coronal – R+E (2.46±0.73), P+E (3.72±0.78), R+S (4.85±0.71), P+S (6.14±0.73); 4) coronal R+E (5.59±1.08), P+E (5.74±1.06), R+S (6.71±1.07), P+S (7.40±1.51).Conclusion: There was a relationship between the luting protocol of the glass fiber post and the endodontic cement. Eugenol plays an important role inside the dentinal tubules by interfering negatively in the bond strength to root dentin.

Proper selection of the luting agent is fundamental to avoid failure due to lack of retention in post-retained crowns. The objective of this study was to investigate the tensile bond strength and failure mode of glass fiber posts luted with different cements. Glass fiber posts were luted in 40 mandibular premolars, divided into 4 groups (n = 10): Group 1 - resin-modified glass ionomer RelyX Luting; Group 2 - resin-modified glass ionomer Fuji Plus; Group 3 - resin cement RelyX ARC; Group 4 - resin cement Enforce. Specimens were assessed by tensile strength testing and light microscopy analysis for observation of failure mode. The tensile bond strength values of each group were compared by ANOVA and Tukey test. The significance level was set at 5%. The failure modes were described as percentages. The following tensile strength values were obtained: Group 1 - 247.6 N; Group 2 - 256.7 N; Group 3 - 502.1 N; Group 4 - 477.3 N. There was no statistically significant difference between Groups 1 and 2 or between Groups 3 and 4, yet the resin cements presented significantly higher tensile bond strength values than those presented by the glass ionomer cements. Group 1 displayed 70% of cohesive failures, whereas Groups 2, 3 and 4 exhibited 70% to 80% of adhesive failures at the dentin-cement interface. We concluded that resin cements and glass ionomer cements are able to provide clinically sufficient retention of glass fiber posts, and that glass ionomer cements may be especially indicated when the application of adhesive techniques is difficult.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of a sonic application of self-adhesive resin cements on the bond strength of glass fiber posts to root dentin. Eighty bovine incisors were randomly divided into eight groups (n = 10). Four self-adhesive resin cements were used—RelyX U200 (3M/ESPE), Bifix SE (Voco), seT PP (SDI), and Panavia SA (Kuraray). The cements were inserted into the root canal in two different modes—Centrix syringe (control) or with a sonic device (Sonic Smart). The roots were sectioned and taken to a universal test machine (Instron 3342) to perform the push-out test. The fracture pattern was evaluated by stereomicroscope and scanning electron microscope. The bond strength data were analyzed by two-way ANOVA and Tukey tests (α = 0.05). The interaction between the main factors was significant (p = 0.002). The sonic application increased the bond strength in comparison with the conventional application for the RelyX U200 (p < 0.001) and Bifix SE (p < 0.017) cements. However, for the seT PP and Panavia SA cements, the bond strength values did not differ significantly (p > 0.05). The fracture pattern showed adhesive at the interface between the luting cement and the dentin. Using a sonic device in the application of self-adhesive resin cement helpedpromote an increase in the bond strength for RelyX U200 and Bifix SE.

Abstract Objective This study aimed to evaluate the influence of chelating agents (EDTA, citric acid and Tetraclean) on glass fiber posts adhesion to root dentin. Materials and Methods Forty mandibular premolars single canals, with complete apical root, straight, circular cross sections were selected, accessed and had the cervical third prepared with Gates-Glidden drills, then included in resin, instrumented with ProTaper Universal and the root canal obturation was carried out. After, the samples were randomly divided into 4 groups (n = 10) to test the final irrigation solutions: G1:17% EDTA; G2:10% citric acid; G3: Tetraclean and G4: saline solution (control). After 30 days of storage (36.5° C and 100% humidity), the post preparation was performed leaving 4 mm of apical endodontic filling. Then, a fiber-glass post previously selected was coated with ED Primer adhesive system and resin sealer Panavia, installed and stored for 24 hours at 37°C. The samples were subjected to a tensile test with a constant speed of 1 mm/min with 2000 Kgf. The results were analyzed with the ANOVA test. Results The statistical analyzes indicated no significant differences between the groups (p > 0.05). Conclusion The type of chelating agent used in the final irrigation of the endodontic treatment did not influence the tensile strength of the fixation system used to sealer the glass fiber posts to the intracanal dentin.
