Aim: The objective is to evaluate the influence of different burs used to prepare the root canal space and acid ultrasonic agitation on bond strength (BS) between glass fiber posts (GFP) and root dentin. Methods: After endodontic treatment, the root canal spaces of 36 extracted human canines were prepared, according to the rotary instrument used (n=18): carbide bur (CB), provided by the post manufacturer and a diamond bur (DB). In both groups, the fiber posts were cemented with the adhesive system Ambar and resin cement Allcem, following the manufacturer`s instructions. Previously to the cementation procedures, the groups were subdivided into 2 groups (n=9), according to the phosphoric acid application mode: conventional etching (CE) and active etching (AE), performed by ultrasonic tip, both for 15s. Before the cementation procedures and after the acid application, 1 root of each group was randomly selected for ultrastructural morphological evaluation by SEM. After 1 week of the cementation, 8 specimens per group were transversely sectioned into six 1-mm thick slices, the root canal regions (cervical, medium and apical) were identified and the push-out test was performed to evaluate BS. Data were analyzed by 3-way ANOVA and Tukey test (α=0.05). Results: The results showed that the cross-product interaction of all factors was significant (P=0.035). Higher bond strength values were obtained when a DB with conventional etching, instead of CB, was used to prepare the root post space. Conclusion: It may be concluded that the use of diamond burs with conventional etching yields high BS values in all root canal thirds.

ABSTRACT Aim The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of pretreatment of different irrigating solutions with and without the application the Nd: YAG laser on the bond strength (RU) of the adhesion of the fiberglass post relined with resin composite to the root dentin. Materials and methods Sixty-six single bovine incisor roots were divided into 6 groups according to irrigating solution and with/without the apllication of the Nd: YAG laser after root canal filling: S- saline; C-2% chlorhexidine solution, H-2.5% sodium hypochlorite; SL-saline + laser, CL-2% chlorhexidine + laser; HL-2.5% sodium hypochlorite + laser (all n = 11). The roots were standardized up to a file # 80 and root-filled with gutta-percha (Dentsply) and Sealer 26 (Dentsply) by lateral condensation. The root canal filling was partly removed. Afterward, root canals were irrigated with 5 ml of the selected irrigant and the fiberglass post were cemented with epoxy resin curing dual Bifix QM (VOCO) and a self-etch adhesive system Futurabond DC (VOCO). All roots were sectioned transversely, and the push-out tested was performed. The bond strength means were analyzed by the analysis of variance and Tukey test (α= 5%). Results The following bond strength MPa values—were recorded for each group: group C—7.77(±1.8)a, LC—6.46 (±2.2)a, S7.33 (±2.2)a, LS 7.35 (±1.68)a, H 5.43 (±1,3)b, LH 5.13 (±1,6)b. A signifcant bond strenght decrease was noticed with the use of 2.5% NaOCl (p < 0.05). No statistical significant difference were found with our without the apllication of the Nd:YAG laser (p > 0.05). Conclusion Regardless the irrigant tested, the use of Nd: YAG laser can be indicated prior to cementation of fiberglass without loss in bond strength. Abstract The aim of this study was to compare the bond strength (BS) of glass fiber posts (GFP) luted to oval and circular-shaped root canals rehabilitated using varying post techniques, at different intraradicular levels. Ninety 16-mm-long roots of human mandibular premolars, classified either as having oval or circular-shaped canals, were endodontically treated and prepared for restoration using one of three different post techniques (n=15): 1) single GFP; 2) resin-relined GFP; 3) main GFP associated with accessory posts. GFPs were luted with a dual polymerizing resin cement (RelyX ARC) after the canal had been treated with a 3-step etch-and-rinse adhesive system (Adper Scothbond Multipurpose). The samples were sectioned into three 1-mm-thick sections, which were differentiated by the root level (cervical, middle and apical) and tested for push-out BS. Assessment of failure mode was made under a stereomicroscope. Data were analyzed using repeated measures three-way ANOVA and Tukey’s test. The root canal cross-section had a significant influence on BS (p<0.001), with the lowest values being observed in oval-shaped canals. The post technique also significantly affected the BS (p=0.018), with the resin-relined GFPs providing the highest BS values in both oval and circular-shaped canals. Irrespective of the cross-section of the root canal and post technique, there was no significant difference in BS in the cervical, middle and apical third of the root canal (p=0.084). In oval-shaped canals, the BS to intraradicular dentin at cervical, middle or apical level could be increased when the GFPs posts were relined.

Objectives: Calcium hypochlorite (Ca(OCl)2) is currently used as a root canal irrigant. The aim of this study was to compare the effects of calcium hypochlorite and sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl), as root canal irrigants, on the bond strength of posts cemented with a self-adhesive resin cement. Materials and Methods: In this in-vitro study, 40 maxillary central incisors with similar root lengths were decoronated. The teeth were randomly divided into five groups based on the irrigant used: Group 1: normal saline (control), Group 2: 2.5% sodium hypochlorite, Group 3: 5.25% sodium hypochlorite, Group 4: 2.5% calcium hypochlorite, and Group 5: 5% calcium hypochlorite. Root canal treatments were performed with Gates-Glidden drills and the irrigant corresponding to each group was used upon changing the file and for irrigating the post space. Then, glass fiber posts were cemented by BisCem self-adhesive cement. After applying 1,000 thermocycles at 5-55°C, three samples of the mid-section of each root were prepared: one for scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and the rest for push-out testing. Data were analyzed with SPSS 23 software using one-way analysis of variance and post-hoc Tukey’s test. Results: The highest and lowest mean bond strengths were recorded in groups 5 and 1, respectively. There was a significant difference between the 5% calcium hypochlorite group and the other groups (P<0.001). The difference between the other groups was not significant. Conclusion: The use of 5% calcium hypochlorite with self-adhesive cements increases the push-out bond strength of fiber posts to radicular dentin.

ABSTRACT Aim The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of chlorhexidine and ethanol application on the push-out bond strength and bond durability of fiber posts cemented with an etch-and-rinse adhesive system/resin cement to intraradicular dentin. Materials and methods Fifty-four bovine roots were shaped for the cementation of a fiberglass post and received the application of 37% phosphoric acid. They were then randomly divided into three groups, according to the type of dentin treatment (n = 18) performed: no treatment (control group), 100% ethanol, or 2% chlorhexidine. Next, the adhesive system (Adper Scotch Bond Multipurpose Plus, 3M ESPE) was applied to the dentin, according to the manufacturer's instructions. Glass fiber posts were cemented with dual resin cement (Rely X ARC, 3M ESPE). After 48 hours, the specimens were serially sectioned for push-out test analysis, providing two slices from each root third (cervical, medium and apical), one of which was tested immediately and the other stored in distilled water for 180 days. The data were analyzed with three-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) for repeated measures and Tukey's test at a 5% significance level. Results Intraradicular treatment with chlorhexidine yielded the highest bond strength means, followed by ethanol treatment. The control group presented the lowest bond strength means. Water storage exerted no effect on bond strength values. Conclusion Both chlorhexidine and ethanol improved push-out bond strength to intraradicular dentin, with the former providing the best results, regardless of the storage time. Clinical significance The application of 2% chlorhexidine or 100% ethanol may be an important step that can be taken to enhance bond strength of fiber posts to intraradicular dentin, when dual resin cements are used. Abstract The objective of the present study was to evaluate the influence of resin cement thickness on the bond strength of prefabricated and customized glass fiber posts after storage in distilled water. Thirty human uniradicular roots were treated endodontically. The roots were divided into 3 groups: THIN (thin cement layer) - post space preparation with #0.5 drill and cementation of #0.5 post; THICK (thick cement layer) - post space preparation with #1 drill and cementation of #0.5 post; and CUSTOM (customized cement layer) - post space preparation with #1 drill and cementation of a customized post (#0.5 glass fiber posts customized with resin composite). All posts were luted with self-adhesive resin cement. The push-out test was carried out after storage for 24 h and 90 days in distilled water at 37 °C. The data were analyzed with three-way ANOVA and Tukey's test (a=0.05). Bond strengths were significantly higher for CUSTOM (9.37 MPa), than for THIN (7.85 MPa) and THICK (7.07 MPa), which were statistically similar. Considering the thirds, the bond strength varied in the sequence: apical (7.13 MPa) < middle (8.22 MPa) = coronal (8.94 MPa). Bond strength for 24 h storage was significantly higher (8.80 MPa) than for 90-day storage (7.40 MPa). It may be concluded that the thickness of resin cement influenced the bond strength of glass fiber posts. The customized posts presented higher bond strength. Storage in water for 90 days affected negatively the values of bond strength, especially for thick cement layers in the apical third.

<p>The aim of the present study was to compare the effects of Nd:YAG laser application in root canals on bond strengths of fiber posts. Thirty single-rooted bovines were randomly divided into three groups (n=10); root canal instrumentation was performed, and pretreatment was conducted as follows: C group: conventional treatment (without laser irradiation); ALC group: Nd:YAG laser was applied after adhesive; and LAC group: Nd:YAG laser was applied before adhesive. The fiber posts Rebilda 15 DC (Voco) were cemented with an adhesive system and resin cement, in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions. Six slices with 1.0mm height was obtained for of each root and bond strength was measured by push-out test using a universal testing machine (0.5 mm/min). Data were analyzed using Kruskal-Wallis and Dunn’s tests (p &lt;0.05). Push-out bond strengths to root canal dentin were affected by the type of treatment and root third. The use of Nd:YAG laser after the application of adhesive system had a higher bonding performance compared with the use of laser before the application. Also, cervical and medium third presented higher bond strength values than the apical third. It must be conclude that the laser irradiation over the non-cured adhesive system is more efficient for increase in bond strength than the irradiation after the application of the adhesive. However, the use of 60mJ of laser energy is not sufficient to improve the bonding performance.</p>

Objectives: Calcium hypochlorite (CH) has been recently used as a root canal irrigant. The aim of the present study was to compare the effect of CH and sodium hypochlorite (SH), as root canal irrigants, on the push-out bond strength of fiber posts cemented with an etch-and-rinse resin cement.  Materials and Methods: In this experimental in-vitro study, 40 human anterior teeth with similar root lengths were randomly divided into five groups (N=8) according to the protocol of root canal irrigation as follows: group 1: saline (control); group 2: 2.5% SH; group 3: 5.25% SH; group 4: 2.5% CH; group 5: 5% CH. Before post placement, the post space was irrigated using the same irrigation protocol, and after that, they were irrigated by distilled water. Fiber posts were cemented with All-Bond 3 bonding and Dou-Link Universal cement. After thermocycling (1000 cycles, 5- 55°C), a push-out test was performed, and data were analyzed using one-way analysis of variance and Tukey's post-hoc test with SPSS version 23 (α=0.05). Results: The highest and lowest mean bond strengths were detected in groups 2 and 5, respectively. There was no significant difference between group 1 and the SH groups (P>0.05), but the difference between group 1 and the CH groups was significant (P<0.001). There was a significant difference between SH groups and CH groups (P<0.001). Conclusion: Compared to SH, as a root canal irrigant, CH decreased the push-out bond strength of fiber posts cemented with an etch-and-rinse resin cement.

Aim: This study evaluated the effect of a sonic device on the bonding of fiberglass posts cemented with a self-etching adhesive combined with conventional cement or a self-adhesive cement to root dentin. Methods: Forty single-rooted bovine incisors were endodontically prepared using a step-back technique. Gutta-percha and AH Plus sealer were used for root canal filling, combined with a thermoplasticization technique. After 1 week, the post space was prepared and the roots were divided into four groups according to the following factors: adhesive system/resin cement (Ambar/ AllCem Core [FGM] and RelyX U200 [3M]) and application mode (manual or sonic). The posts were cemented and the roots were cut into discs and submitted to push-out bond strength (POBS) test. The failure mode was evaluated using a stereoscope at 25x magnification. The data were analyzed statistically using ANOVA and Tukey’s post-hoc test (α = 0.05). Results: The sonically activated RelyX U200 group was superior to the other groups. RelyX U200 manually applicated showed similar results to those of sonically activated Âmbar/AllCem. These three groups outperformed the Âmbar/AllCem manually applicated group. Adhesive failure between dentin and resin cement was the most predominant pattern. Conclusion: Sonic application of self-etching adhesive and self-adhesive cement improved the POBS of fiber posts to the root canal.
