Abstract The mechanism of the attack of Type 310 stainless steel by vanadium compounds has been studied. Catastrophic attack by a mixture of 67 wt. percent V 2 O 5 + 33 wt. percent of NaVO 3 occurred at temperatures of 1900 to 2000 F if the steel had previously been oxidized and air and water vapor were present. In some instances an unidentified phase formed at the steel-slag interface attacked the steel by grain boundary penetration and adsorption of steel grains. A chemical analysis of the slag showed that the chromium-iron and manganese-iron ratios were the same in the slag as in the steel. The nickel-iron ratio, however, was higher in the slag than in the steel. This would suggest the possibility that nickel is selectively absorbed by the slag prior to general attack. 4.2.3; 4.3.3, 3.5.9, 6.2.5

To study the effects of substrate materials on the photocatalytic activity, TiO2films were immobilized on the inner wall surface of ceramic, glass and stainless steel tubes by sol-gel method. X-ray diffraction (XRD) results indicated that the crystal form of TiO2were all anatase type with theoretical particle size of 15 nm. According to the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) results, appearance of the element Na was observed which would decrease the photocatalytic activity. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) photos showed that the film coating on the ceramic and glass were even and uniform with thickness of about 300 nm and practical particle size of 20 nm to 100 nm. However, the film coating on stainless steel was hackly which would lead to diffraction of lights. The degradation rate constants of methylene blue (MB) with initial concentration of 5 mg.L-1were 0.049 min-1、0.029 min-1and 0.023 min-1with films coating on ceramic, stainless steel and glass tubes respectively. Degraded with TiO2film coating on ceramic tube, the according rate constants of phenol were 0.37, 0.14, 0.04 and 0.02 min-1for initial concentration of 2, 10, 50 and 100 mg.L-1respectively.

A laser interferometer gravitational wave observatory (LIGO) is being developed with sensitivities that will have a high probability of detecting gravitational waves from astrophysical sources. Detectors are also planned by others in Europe and eventually in space. A major component of the proposed LIGO is a total of 16 km (10 miles) of 1.2 m (48 in.) dia tube at a pressure of less than 10-8torn It will be of 304 L stainless steel procured directly from the steel mills with the initial hydrogen content specially reduced. (Target is 1 ppm by weight.) Projections of the outgassing rates of hydrogen and of water vapor as a function of time will be given and the uncertainties discussed. Based on these, a preliminary analysis of the vacuum system will be presented.
