A crustacean survey was made in Sepetiba bay, Rio de Janeiro state, southeastern Brazil. Twelve sandy beaches were sampled on five islands in this embayment. A total of 3024 individuals were collected, belonging to 21 species, which are grouped in 16 families, seven infraorders, seven suborders, and four orders. Isopods, followed by amphipods and tanaids, showed the highest abundance, amounting to over 92% of the dominance of crustaceans. The main species were Excirolana armata, Excirolana braziliensis (isopods), Atlantorchestoidea brasiliensis (amphipod), and Monokalliapseudes schubarti (tanaid), which together accounted about 80% of crustaceans of the beaches studied. Excirolana braziliensis had the highest frequency. The majority of species found are typical of sandy beaches, with large spatial distribution.

Human activities change coastal ecosystems, but they are also altered by natural causes, such as the relative sea level rise. This work analyzes the influence of changes of the relative sea level at Guaratiba mangrove and Marambaia barrier island, in Sepetiba Bay, Rio de Janeiro State (SE, Brazil), based on photo interpretation. The objective of this study is to analyze the morphodynamics of Marambaia coastal sand barrier, estimating the rate of the shoreline change by mapping the vegetation line position, variations of dune extension and overwash processes. The Marambaia barrier island and Guaratiba mangrove are highly vulnerable to sea level rise. The mangrove is suffering pressure from the relative sea level rising and urbanization. The mangrove migration towards the continent is evident through the analyses of aerial images from 1976 to 2005. If the current erosion process continues in the Marambaia barrier island, a disruption in the central area of the sand bank should occur, which will create a new communication between Sepetiba Bay and the ocean. This break will change the present internal circulation of the bay and modify the ecosystems. Also considering the anthropic pressure, if the Marambaia barrier island breaks, the mangrove area will be reduced or disappear. The sea level rise and the sedimentation rate lowering will result in the migration and marine transgression in Marambaia barrier island and Guaratiba mangrove. Manguezal. Elevação do nível relativo do mar. Erosão costeira. Galgamento oceânico.

Several studies have been conducted to explain patterns of the abundance, richness and diversity of sandy-beach macrofauna; however, such analyses have ignored the overall functional structure of macrofauna communities. Few studies have examined polychaete feeding guilds on sandy beach environments. To examine the effects of environmental factors on polychaete feeding guilds on sandy beaches, 12 sandy beaches from five islands in Sepetiba Bay were sampled. A total of 24 polychaete morphospecies, grouped among 21 families, were identified in these sandy beaches. The polychaete species were classified into 10 feeding guilds, and the SDT guild (suspended-deposit feeders, discretely motile, with tentacles) was the most abundant feeding guild, with 34.2% of total number of organisms. The highest trophic importance index and index of trophic diversity values were recorded on the sheltered beaches. A canonical correspondence analysis showed that the exposure rate, beach length, and grain size of the beach sediment significantly affected the polychaete feeding guild distribution and abundance. We can conclude that sheltered beaches have a higher diversity of feeding guilds than exposed beaches and that the biological descriptors of the feeding guilds are directly associated with the grain size of the sediment.

During the period from 2001 to 2002, we examined samples of water and sediment from five stations in Sepetiba Bay, located in the south region of Rio de Janeiro state, Brazil. We identified 32 species of ciliate protists representing seven classes: Karyorelictea, Heterotrichea, Spirotrichea, Litostomatea, Phyllopharyngea, Protostomatea and Oligohymenophorea. Among the Spirotrichea, we discovered Pseudokeronopsis sepetibensis n. sp., characterized by a unique combination of three features: 3 contractile vacuoles, an inconspicuous mid-ventral row, and 4 5 frontoterminal cirri. It showed yellow-greenish coloration and elongated body outline (100 140 m x 20 26 m). On average, there were 44 adoral membranelles, 50 left marginal cirri, 48 right marginal cirri and 41 mid-ventral cirri disposed in a straight row past the level of the oral region. Other features include 4 frontoterminal cirri and a constant number of 3 transverse cirri; 8 frontal cirri (4 anterior and 4 posterior arranged as an atypical bicorone).

This work analyses lead concentrations and isotope ratios 204Pb,206Pb,207Pb,208Pb, determined by leaching and total dissolution techniques from surface bottom sediment samples collected in the western sector of Sepetiba Bay, Rio de Janeiro (SE Brazil). The main aim of this work was to identify possible sources of Pb, particularly those related to anthropogenic activities for the study area located in the external region of this bay. Isotope ratios of 206Pb, 207Pb ranged from 1.160 to 1.259 for the total dissolution technique and from 1.175 to 1.188 for the leaching technique. The Pb isotope signature of the surface sediments of the western sector of Sepetiba Bay were compared with that obtained in other studies performed in Sepetiba Bay, including records of pre- and pos-industrial activity, and in other Brazilian regions. The isotope signature of the analyzed sediments in the western sector of Sepetiba Bay is similar to that obtained in previous works realized in the eastern and northeastern internal region of this bay which is under strong urbanization and industrial pressure. The results of Pb isotope signature obtained by the integrated use of total dissolution and leaching techniques allowed to trace the presence of sediments dredged from highly contaminated areas located in the eastern and north-eastern internal region of Sepetiba Bay probably as a consequence of dredging activities and natural processes of sediment dispersion. This study focuses on metals analysis in kidney and liver tissues of Egretta thula which were collected prostrate or newly dead in Coroa Grande mangrove, Sepetiba Bay, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, between March 2005 and October 2008. Kidney and liver were collected and analysed to evaluate heavy metal pollution. High values and widest range were detected for all metals in liver and kidney tissues. Geometric mean differences from metals concentrations for Zn, Cd, Ni, Pb, Cu, and Cr, respectively, were found in both organs. Results from linear regression analysis were non-significant in kidney (r = -0.79975, P = 0.10428), and in liver (r = -0.53193, P = 0.35618). With ANOVA analysis for metal accumulation differences (kidney*liver), at the 0.05 level, the results were significantly different (F = 33.17676, P = 0.00000; F = 12.47880, P = 0.00000). These results indicate that Sepetiba Bay shows worrying levels of metals in this study with E. thula, showing potential power of widespread biological and mutagenic adverse effects in trophic levels, and therefore, signalling risk to human health.
