This article argues that Durkheim’s founding insight – uniquely social phenomena – presents us with both a foundation for the discipline of sociology and the risk that the discipline will become isolated. This, we argue, has happened. Our contention is that the emergent social phenomena need to be understood in relation to, but not reduced to, their biological and psychological substrates. Similarly, there are a number of other characteristics, notably of self-organization, which are distinguishing properties of social phenomena but also of quite different phenomena. The comparison is instructive. We therefore argue for an ecological approach to sociological theory, which has important relationships to the general theories and philosophy of ecology and biology. We explore a number of terminological and conceptual parallels that may inform our understanding of the relation of social theory to these and other disciplines.

The article is devoted to the analysis of the role that environmental education and upbringing play in the formation of eco-friendly awareness and thinking. The author outlines that at the moment, it is becoming clear that it is impossible to overcome the ecological crisis exclusively by technical means. It is also noted that the creation of a system of environmental education and upbringing is one of the most important ways to overcome the environmental crisis. The result of the work of such a system should be the formation of a developed eco-friendly awareness among all age and social groups. Theoretical bases. The features of environmentalism and the principles of eco-friendly awareness formulated by N.F. Reimers are reviewed; the main requirements for modern environmental education are analyzed. Special attention is paid to ecological culture in the philosophy of ecology. The scientific and educational projects in the field of ecology aimed at the exchange of experience and practical skills between the older and younger generations are described. As part of the course "History and philosophy of science" at the Institute of philosophy of the Russian Academy of Sciences, postgraduate students of biological specialties are taught a course on the basics of bio-and ecophilosophy to develop a holistic worldview in the field of science under study. It is concluded that environmental education contributes to the development of eco-friendly awareness, ecological culture and eco-friendly thinking, which is the most important condition for overcoming the environmental crisis and the harmonious coexistence of humanity and nature.

The concept of the balanced development idea caused a renewed view on the problems in the area of the research methodology in environmental education. The aforesaid viewis related to the necessity of implementing methods in which an appropriate place will be found for a holistic approach to occurring environmental processes. An approach enabling interdisciplinarity of this problem will finally find its solution also in a new teaching method. This forces a new quality of a perceptive view of the environment, however by no means severing from the accepted research methodology enforced in nature sciences. The devised and generated uniformed standardization of holistic environmental education methodology, philosophy of ecology and environmental ethics, should, as a result, impact not only the knowledge status on the said problem but also create quintessential basics in execution of research on the process of shaping the pro-ecology approach. The article also includes selected comments on the studies on estimation methods of the holistic nature science education, which were carried out in the 2006/2007 academic year at the Institute of Ecology and Bioethics of the UKSW (Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński University). The objective of the aforesaid studies, among others, was to work out new system solutions, which could be implemented into the academic teaching programs of the Environmental Protection study specialization. They should also become a reason for a discussion on research methodology for the final individual assignation of “Environmental Protection” studies in our country.
