Paleoclimatic reconstruction in the Tatra Mountains of the western Carpathians during MIS 9–7 inferred from a multiproxy speleothem record

Abstract The SC-3 speleothem from Szczelina Chochołowska Cave, located in the Tatra Mountains, was studied in detail. U-series dating and age–depth modeling allowed us to constrain the period of speleothem growth to between approximately 330 and 200 ka, that is, during Marine Isotope Stages (MIS) 9–7. The complementary use of stable isotope analyses, petrographic studies, and trace element analyses allowed the identification of warm and wet climatic conditions that were favorable for speleothem growth during MIS 9e and MIS 9c. Unfavorable climatic periods included the cold glacial conditions of MIS 8 and the MIS 9/MIS 8 transition. The breaks in the growth of the SC-3 stalagmite were most likely connected with a reduction in precipitation in MIS 9a and extreme hydrologic events during MIS 8. Comparisons with other European records suggest that the climatic variability recorded in the speleothem from the Tatra Mountains is not only a record of local environmental conditions but can also be linked to European climatic patterns during both interglacial and glacial intervals. This makes our study the northernmost paleoclimatic record for the whole Carpathian range and one of the very few records from those periods worldwide.

A new species of dorvilleid polychaete,Ophryotrocha cyclops, has been observed on the rocky seafloor underneath deep salmonid aquaculture sites on the south coast of Newfoundland, Canada. The distribution of these opportunistic worms is likely related to organic matter accumulation on the seafloor, and this species may have a role in remediation processes. To better understand the functional role ofO. cyclopsat aquaculture sites, it is important to know what they feed upon. Here, stable isotope analyses (δ13C, δ15N and δ34S) and trace element analyses were performed on dorvilleids and their potential food sources at three aquaculture sites. Stable isotope analyses revealed spatial and temporal variation in the isotopic carbon signature ofO. cyclops, highlighting possible differences in the food sources of individual dorvilleids within and between sites. The isotopic composition of dorvilleids was closest to that of fish pellets; the presence of abundant lipid droplets in gut epithelial cells ofO. cyclopssuggests the assimilation of fish pellet-derived lipids. Trace element analysis indicated thatO. cyclopsdoes not concentrate the aquaculture tracers Zn or Cu to a large extent. However, concentrations of sulphur were high inO. cyclopscompared with other sources. Taken together, results show thatO. cyclopsmost likely consume both fish pellets and flocculent matter-associated bacteria. As such, they are involved in sulphur cycling and fish pellet degradation at aquaculture sites.

<p>The effects of extreme climatic changes on Alpine ecosystems during the last glacial are poorly understood. The recently discovered Nesseltalgraben site in the northern Alps provides a high-resolution sediment sequence covering the Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 3 (59-28 ka BP), a period characterized by climatic extremes known as Dansgaard-Oeschger cycles or Greenland interstadials/stadials. The radiocarbon-dated composite profile of 21 m stratigraphic height provided a continuous pollen profile, bryophyte macrofossils, and wood remains. Additional to palaeobotanic studies, stable isotope analyses (δ<sup>2</sup>H, δ<sup>13</sup>C, δ<sup>18</sup>O) of bulk sedimentary cellulose and plant macrofossils (wood, monocots, and bryophytes) complemented the palaeoenvironmental and palaeoclimatic studies. Among the terrestrial pollen, Poaceae and arboreal pollen showed an antithetic behaviour and high variability reflecting interstadial-stadial climatic switches. Arboreal pollen are dominated by <em>Pinus sylvestris</em>-type, with admixtures of <em>Picea</em>, <em>Betula</em>, <em>Alnus</em>, and <em>Salix</em>. The arboreal pollen record exhibits several maxima indicating milder climatic conditions, tentatively attributed to Greenland interstadials 5.1, 6, 8, 11/12 and 14-17. During Heinrich events 4 and 5, arboreal pollen show distinct minima underlining a severe impact of these events on regional climate and vegetation. Bryophyte assemblages show dominant wetland conditions at the site during the entire MIS 3. The sudden occurrence of <em>Drepanocladus turgescens</em> after 31.6 ka cal BP indicates a change from a fen to a frequently drying wetland habitat linked to enhanced glacifluvial action caused by glaciers approaching towards the site. Stable isotope analyses of extracted bulk sedimentary cellulose revealed strongly fluctuating values best interpreted by variable mixtures between a terrestrial end member (lignified plants, monocots) with high δ<sup>2</sup>H, δ<sup>13</sup>C, and δ<sup>18</sup>O values on the one hand, and wetland (bryophyte) cellulose sources with low isotope values on the other. Strong negative isotope excursions in the sedimentary and bryophyte cellulose records between 37.3 and 34.8 ka cal BP are best explained by a change to more humid conditions, possibly related to enhanced permafrost, and are contemporaneous with massive increases of Cyperaceae pollen. We conclude that the vegetation at Nesseltalgraben responded to several Greenland stadials/interstadials and Heinrich events. A straightforward correlation between vegetation oscillations and Greenland ice core records, as has been found in Alpine speleothem isotope records, is, however, not always obvious which could be the result of multiple additional abiotic and biotic factors influencing tree dissemination and growth.</p>
