A comprehensive database was built to examine the spatial diversity patterns of polychaete species from the continental shelf in Southern Gulf of Mexico. Using Cluster and nMDS analysis we found the composition of polychaete species to be different between the terrigenous and carbonate regions of the Gulf. To test the relative importance of spatial and environmental components in the polychaetae community structure in the Southern Gulf of Mexico, we examined the spatial relationships between polychaetae assemblages and environmental variables over broad geographical scales. A distance-based redundancy analysis (dbRDA) and variation partitioning was used to quantify the relative importance of these explanatory variables on the spatial variations of species richness and composition. Variation partitioning is an important tool to investigate the importance of spatial structure to species distribution in communities, but it has not yet been used in marine ecosystems. The significance level of spatial and environmental components to the distribution of polychaete species showed that the combined effect of spatial processes and sediment characteristics explained a higher percentage of variance than those parameters could alone.

In 2018, in the bottom fauna of the Caspian Sea, single specimens of a previously unknown species of polyhaetes were discovered. Since 2019, pelagic larvae of this species have been recorded in zooplankton samples. These worms are also found in the nutrition of migratory and semi-migratory fish species. According to morphological features, this polychaete species is identified as Marenzelleria arctia , an Arctic species dominating in the Gulf of Finland and probably invaded the Caspian along the Volga-Caspian invasion corridor.

AbstractBryostromatolites are found in stressed environments from the Paleozoic to the Recent. They are formed by alternating layers of bryozoans and microbes. This study investigates recent bryostromatolites in brackish ponds in the Netherlands to better understand ancient analogues and the environments which hosted them. They formed a fringing reef at the site Ronde Weel and a barrier reef at Kaaskenswater. The ponds had low biodiversity with only one bivalve species, two gastropod species, one ostracod species, and three diatom species comprising most of the easily fossilizable taxa; one isopod species, one decapod species, and two polychaete species were also present. Observations of microbial layers and cementation practices indicate that an alternation of bryozoan-favouring conditions and microbe-favouring conditions is essential to forming bryostromatolites. The collected bryostromatolites only had tiny living bryozoan patches. Water tests confirmed a brackish environment but with enriched arsenic and titanium concentrations and periodic euxinia. The extreme environment explains the lack of biodiversity and may provide information about the environments in which past bryostromatolites formed.

Polychaetes are among the most common marine organisms, and in many habitats they dominate both in species richness and abundance. They are often found in association with other organisms. Specifically, sponges with their complex three-dimensional internal architecture, are known to host a great diversity of polychaetes. Due to the fact that a large number of sponge-associated polychaete species are known to be common on other substrates, most studies agree that they represent an opportunistic part of the sponge-inhabiting assemblage, without any selection of species tightly associated with sponges. The current study aimed to shed light on polychaetes affinity to sponges. We applied Clarke and Warwick’s taxonomic distinctness indices and test for random assembly, to a dataset compiled of 13 publications that provided polychaete species lists from massive-sponges across the Mediterranean Sea, and compared them with benthic-polychaete species lists from all of the Mediterranean and its zoogeographical regions. These indices are considered to be independent of sampling efforts and setting, and can be applied on presence/absence data, making it possible to compare data from multiple studies. We further compared the trophic structure of sponge-associated polychaetes between the Mediterranean’s zoogeographical regions. Our results show that the trophic structure of the sponge-associated polychaete community, was found to be stable across the entire Mediterranean Sea. Moreover, randomization tests showed that at almost all observational scales (e.g., study, region, Mediterranean) the phylogenetic diversity is not assembled at random, and that sponge-associated polychaete communities are composed of taxonomically related species. These results support the statement that polychaete assemblages inhabiting sponges are not a transient facultative assembly of species, but rather stable, diverse and specialized communities which are well adapted for life in this habitat.

Zootaxa has been the leading journal on invertebrate systematics especially within Annelida. Our current estimates indicate annelids include approximately 20,200 valid species of polychaetes, oligochaetes, leeches, sipunculans and echiurans. We include herein the impact of Zootaxa on the description of new annelid species in the last two decades. Since 2001, there have been over 1,300 new annelid taxa published in about 630 papers. The majority of these are polychaetes (921 new species and 40 new genera) followed by oligochaetes (308 new species and 10 new genera) and leeches (21 new species). The numerous papers dealing with new polychaete species have provided us a clear picture on which polychaete families have had the most taxonomic effort and which authors and countries have been the most prolific of descriptions of new taxa. An estimated additional 10,000+ species remain to be described in the phylum, thus we urge annelid workers to continue their efforts and aid in training a new generation of taxonomists focused on this ecologically important group.

AbstractPolychaetes can be successfully employed to recover otherwise wasted nutrients present in particulate organic matter (POM) of aquaculture effluents. The present study describes the fatty acid (FA) profile of four different polychaete species cultured in sand filters supplied with effluent water from a marine fish farm. The FA profile of cultured and wild Hediste diversicolor was compared and revealed a ≈ 24.2% dissimilarity, with cultured biomass displaying a higher content in two essential n-3 highly unsaturated FA (HUFA) (EPA [20:5 n-3] and DHA [22:6 n-3]—eicosapentaenoic and docosahexaenoic acid, respectively). The comparison of the FA profile of cultured H. diversicolor with that of other polychaete species whose larvae successfully settled on the sand filters (Diopatra neapolitana, Sabella cf. pavonina and Terebella lapidaria) revealed that their FA profile, which is here described for the first time, displayed high levels of EPA and DHA (≈ 1.5–4.8 and 1.0–1.1 µg mg−1 DW, respectively). The highest concentration of total FA per biomass of polychaete was recorded in H. diversicolor and T. lapidaria, with both species being the ones whose FA profiles revealed a lowest level of dissimilarity and more closely resembled that of the aquafeed used in the fish farm. In the present work it was demonstrated that it is possible to produce polychaetes biomass with high nutritional value through an eco-design concept such as integrated multi-trophic aquaculture (IMTA). Indeed, this framework promotes a cleaner production and, in this specific case, allowed to recover essential fatty acids that are commonly wasted in aquaculture effluents.

Polychaete species are widely distributed throughout Indo-Pacific and European waters. We collected Metasychis specimens from the China Seas to report on Metasychis varicollaris sp. n. and Metasychis gotoi (Izuka, 1902) in greater detail. Geographic analysis of the potential distribution areas of M. gotoi indicates that it may be found in most coastal areas of China. The newly discovered species, M. varicollaris and M. gotoi, have an overlapping distribution in the northern South China Sea. Metasychis varicollaris sp. n. is characterized by a crenulated cephalic rim, complete collar on chaetiger 1, a packet-shaped anal funnel, and a spirally-fringed notochaetae with spiral pectinate bands imbricated over the main shaft. Our study provides a taxonomic key to all species of Metasychis.
