Black rhinoceros (Diceros bicornis) are highly endangered due to poaching and other anthropological reasons and their protection to rebound the numbers and genetic improvement are necessary remedial measures defined by Rhino International Union of Conservation for the Nature Red List (IUCN). In Kenya black rhino numbers declined from approximately 20,000 in the 1970s to fewer than 400 in 1982. Wildlife conservation managers effected strategies to manage/breed the remaining rhinoceros populations in Eastern and Southern Africa within regional sanctuaries. This study analyzes the genetic variability of these remnant rhinoceros using Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA). Majority of the rhinoceros in both Kenyan and Southern Africa group are monophyletic clusters with insignificant genetic variations while some lineages are underrepresented. The Eastern Africa rhinoceros forms a distinct clade from the Sothern Africa counterpart while Tanzania population has admixtures. Tajima-D test showed that these two populations are under different selection pressure possibly due to different history of adverse anthropologic activities. Similarly, the Southern Africa rhinoceros have low genetic diversity compared to the Eastern African population due to extended periods of game hunting during Africa colonization. This study suggests that managed translocations of individual rhinoceros across the separated fragments can be applied to improve their genetic diversity.

This article first explains the importance of the history of smoking pipes for other historical questions, especially in West Africa, where pipe styles are used to date archaeological levels. A survey of the major theories about African smoking and pipes is presented. This is followed by a review of the published archaeological literature pertaining to smoking pipes found at various sites from around the continent. The various controversies surrounding African smoking customs are then looked at in the light of the available evidence. The most likely hypothesis is that cannabis was smoked in water pipes in eastern and southern Africa before the introduction of tobacco. Further research is called for to prove or disprove this hypothesis. Tobacco is shown to have been introduced to West Africa from eastern North America, most likely by the French coming to Senegambia, though possibly by Moroccans coming to Timbuktu.

Objectives: Women who sell sex have a high prevalence of human papilloma virus, which may cause cervical cancer. The objective of this review was to collate findings on prevalence, associated factors, screening, service provision and utilization of services in relation to human papilloma virus and cervical cancer among women who sell sex in Eastern and Southern Africa. Methods: A scoping review methodology was employed. Inclusion criteria were as follows: (1) empirical papers, (2) of studies conducted in Eastern and Southern Africa, (3) published in the last 10 years, and (4) addressing women who sell sex in relation to (5) human papilloma virus and cervical cancer. A thorough search of a range of databases surfaced 66 papers. Both authors applied inclusion and exclusion criteria, resulting in 14 papers being reviewed. Results: The reported prevalence of high-risk human papillomavirus virus varied between 23.6% and 70.5%. HIV sero-positivity, other sexually transmitted infections and Epstein-Barr virus were associated with human papilloma virus and high-grade cervical lesions. High-risk human papilloma virus was associated with women who reported younger age at first intercourse, non-barrier contraceptive use, and no history of condom use. For screening, there was overall agreement between physician- and self-collected samples. Contradictory results were found for visual inspection with acetic acid. Screening services utilization was associated with provider’s recommendation, history of sexually transmitted infections, frequency of facility visit and history of vaginal examination. A diagonal programme led to an increase in screening, attributed to the targeted services. Conclusions: Context is important in planning cervical cancer services. There is a need for enhanced sexually transmitted infections and viral management within cervical cancer prevention. Women who sell sex should be empowered in self-collection of stored-dry specimens, especially in resource-constrained regions. Cervical cancer screening services should be honed to the needs of women who sell sex.

Worthy of celebration is the contribution made by Itumeleng Mosala (hereafter Mosala) to the Black Methodist Consultation, the theological community in Southern Africa, and the Black Consciousness Movement. This article attempts to give theology its world, feet and hands in the person of Mosala. The article departs from the narration of the history of Mosala. It locates Mosala within township life and Old Testament scholarship. Furthermore, the article searches for suitable and effective weapons of intellectual struggle in light of Mosala’s life. The aim of this article is to celebrate the indelible footprints that Mosala made as he communed with black people.
